I had him in almost all of my classes and he sat behind me in auditorium, so we were in close proximity. His girl friend Echo Helstrom was a good friend of mine and they were "dating" for a period of time. We hung out at the L & B Café….at lunch or after school. We all wore black leather jackets. Sometimes Bob wore a shiny vest and a cowboy hat. There we talked, played the small jukebox in our booth, drank chocolate coca cola, and smoked cigarettes. In our senior year, 1959, Bob and I and some others had Dramatics Class together and were in a play called Sob Story….It must have been okay because the audience roared with laughter and applause. Hence, Bob wrote in my yearbook "Good luck in your acting career. Everyone knows you'll make a good one".' Bob Dylan, born Robert Zimmerman, formed several bands while attending Hibbing High School in Minnesota, including one named the Golden Chords who performed covers of songs by Little Richard and Elvis Presley.

Monet, writing in his characteristic bold, purple fountain pen ink, apologises for a setback caused by his correspondent having been asked to hand over Olympia without his permission and continues to explain ‘Messrs. Boussod and Valadon had written to me to ask for my permission to reproduce Olympia in the magazine Figaro Illustre’, adding that he had advised them to make haste and warned them ‘that the painting could be required by the Museums administration at any time, and I had written to you the same day to notify you and ask you to hand it over’. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and a few very small insignificant tears to the edges of a couple of folds, otherwise VG Suzanne Leenhoff (1829-1906) Dutch-born Pianist, the wife of Edouard Manet for whom she frequently modelled. Edouard Manet (1832-1883) French Impressionist Painter. The oil painting Olympia was completed by Manet in 1863 and first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1865. Contemporary audiences viewed the masterpiece with a certain amount of shock, not because of the subject’s nudity, but as a result of Olympia’s confrontational gaze and a number of other details which Manet had included in the painting which identified her as a demi-mondaine. In 1884 Suzanne Manet acquired the painting at an auction of her late husband’s works and, in 1889, Claude Monet expressed a desire to purchase the painting from her with a view to donating it to the Louvre Museum. In the following year, the same in which the present letter was written by Monet, the French Government acquired the painting after a public subscription organized by Monet secured the 20,000 francs asking price made by Suzanne Manet. Today Olympia can be seen at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris.

T.L.S., Ian F, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 4to, Kemsley House, London, 21st July 1955, to Antony Terry in Bonn, Germany. Fleming writes to thank his correspondent for 'the staunch way in which you are feeding me with Atticus paragraphs, which are all either on the nail or very close to it. They are quite excellent and no other correspondent is nearly so fruitful' and continues to praise Terry by writing 'Once again, when you are called upon for help, you have given it in fuller measure than was asked for and produced your usual high quality journalism. I must say, looking back on your years of service for Mercury, I can think of no correspondent with anything approaching your record, and I do hope you realise how much your services are appreciated everywhere in this building, and not least by me'. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature. VG Antony Terry (1913-1992) British Journalist, a former European Editor of The Sunday Times who was first hired in 1949 by Fleming (at the time the Foreign manager for the newspaper). Accompanied by the dust jacket (price clipped). An interesting presentation copy. Some very light, minor discoloration to the front free endpaper, only very slightly affecting the inscription and signature, otherwise VG John Le Carre, born David Cornwell, had a difficult relationship with his father who was an associate of the Kray twins. Continually in debt, Ronnie Cornwell had been jailed for insurance fraud and, as one biographer has noted, it was Cornwell’s elaborate confidence tricks and schemes that led to Le Carre’s fascination with secrets. The scheming con man character Rick Pym, Magnus Pym’s father in A Perfect Spy, was based on Ronnie Cornwell.
DU MAURIER DAPHNE: (1907-1989) British Author. An interesting T.L.S., Daphne du Maurier, one page, 8vo, Kilmarth, Par, Cornwall, 19th January 1974, to Miss. S. Stone in New York. Du Maurier responds to her admirer's letter and provides answers to her questions in three paragraphs, in full, 'Don't Look Now. In a brief flash before dying from the stab-wound, John saw the vaporetto with Laura, and the sisters, was bearing them to his funeral. This was a case of pre-cognition. The Alibi. Fenton had not killed the Kaufman woman, and his confession was, as you suggested, because everything seemed futile, and in some hopeless way he wanted to get back at his wife. The Birds. The movie was rather different from my story, in which I implied that the family concerned would indeed be finally destroyed by the birds.' Accompanied by the original envelope. A letter of interesting content for its references to several of Du Maurier's works, not least her famous novelette The Birds. About EX Don't Look Now is a short story which appeared as part of a collection entitled Not After Midnight in 1971. The collection was published under the title Don't Look Now in America. The novella was adapted into a classic British film of the horror/thriller genre in 1973, starring Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland and directed by Nicholas Roeg. The Alibi is also a short story written by Du Maurier which was published in a collection alongside seven other stories with the title The Breaking Point in 1959. The novelette The Birds was first published in 1952 as part of Du Maurier's collection entitled The Apple Tree. The story was the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock's film The Birds, made in 1963 in the same year which The Apple Tree was reprinted as The Birds and Other Stories.

In his last year at Cambridge Maclean became an agent of The People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD), the interior ministry of the Soviet Union, and graduated with a First in modern languages before entering the Diplomatic Service.
MACLEAN DONALD: (1913-1983) British Diplomat & Spy, a member of the Cambridge Five. An extremely rare original pencil drawing signed by Maclean, one page, 4to, March 1933, on the printed stationery of The Union Society, Cambridge. Maclean has executed an accomplished drawing of a young man seated in a profile head and shoulders pose with a pensive expression on his face. Signed (‘Donald Maclean’) by Maclean in bold pencil at the foot of the drawing and dated March 1933 in his hand. Maclean would appear to have identified the subject of his drawing in his hand with a single name (or series of initials?) which is regretfully somewhat indecipherable, although it can be presumed that the young man was a friend and contemporary of Maclean whilst reading modern languages at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Together with a printed 4to edition of Contemporaries and Makers, edited by John Kaestlin, March 1933, being the Cambridge University literary periodical and containing various printed poems, short stories and essays etc. With the ownership signature of Alastair Morton to the head of the first page and bound in the original maroon printed paper wrappers.
