A Dame Laura Knight for Clarice Cliff design for a Circus Horses, Bizarre pattern circular plate, pencil sketch and watercolour with gilded highlights, signed and titled in pencil ‘Design for small plate, all alike’ circular, 16cm diameter, along with a side plate in the same design, puce printed mark, first edition 1934, 17cm diameter Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) was a leading artist in the first half of the twentieth century, she became the first woman artist to be elected into the Royal Academy since the first female members Angelica Kauffman and Mary Moser. She served as an official war artist during World War II and also travelled to Nuremburg in 1946 to record the War Criminals trial. The Circus pattern which she designed was produced as a complete table service, with matching glassware. Each piece showed different themes including clowns, seals, acrobats, tightrope walkers and horses and was exhibited at the 1934 Harrods Exhibition.

'Winged Hours', a Compton Pottery sectional grey terracotta garden sundial, modelled with winged cherub heads, the conforming capital also with roundels inscribed N, S, E and W, with an octagonal engraved dial, approximately 112cm high (faults). Exhibited: The Watts Gallery exhibition, 1998 at Compton. See Franklin Gould, Veronica. Archibald Knox & Mary Seton Watts Modern Celtic Art Garden Pottery, pp. 14, 15 and 41. Watts's first tombstone, modelled in March 1898 by Thomas Steadman, was inspired by a pattern in the Liberty of Saint Gall, embellished with a ring of cherubs, their intertwining wings surrounding a celtic wheel cross and knot roundel. Two days later Louis Deuchars modelled the capital for her Winged Hours sundial where cherubs face north, south, east and west, suggesting the idea of the Cross

Abbitdung der Session des Parlaments zu Londen uber den Sententz des Grafen von Stafford, [1643], together with The True Maner of the Execution of Thomas Earle of Strafford Lord Lieutenant of Ireland upon Towerhill the 12th May 1641, [1643], two fine engravings of the sentencing and trial of Thomas Wentworth, first earl of Strafford and lord lieutenant of Ireland (1593-1641), plate dimensions 260 x 280 mm, framed and glazed pennington 551 (iii) & 552 (iii) respectively. Strafford was sentenced to death for treason in the unsettled period before the Civil War, despite retaining the favour of the King who attempted to have him freed from the tower in the days before his execution. The former engraving is a fine depiction of the House of Lords with Strafford defending himself in the dock, the latter his shows execution by beheading at the Tower of London on 12 May 1641. Included in this lot are two reference books on Hollar by Denkstein and Van Eerde, both in d.js. (4)

Benedictus Arias Montanus (1527-1598), a Spanish Benedictine monk, Orientalist and Biblical Commentator, was Editor of the famous Antwerp Polyglot Bible published by Christopher Plantin in eight volumes, several volumes of which contained biblical commentaries, much of which was written by Arias Montanus had written himself. Much of the present folio, although published separately, would have appeared in this work. (1)

I & II,bound in one, 1769 & 1797,. ninety-two full page engraved plates, including one or two folding, many engraved head- and tail-pieces, some minor foxing and marginal soiling, small semi-circular stain to inner margin at foot of vol. affecting first third of the volume, contemp. half dark green morocco, worn with upper portion of backstrip deficient, folio Blackmer 1566. These two volumes were the product of the Society of Dilettantis first Ionian mission in 1764-66. The first volume is the second issue of c. 1784, with an additonal chaper IV added. (1)
