Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005)Gagner ou Perdre signed and dated 'Eduardo Paolozzi. 47.' (lower right), titled 'Gagner ou Perdre' (upper centre)watercolour and gouache46.5 x 50.5cm (18 5/16 x 19 7/8in).Footnotes:ProvenanceWith The Mayor Gallery, London, where acquired by Mr and Mrs Milnes-Smith, 20th July 1961Sale; Sotheby's, London, 13 July 2007, lot 77, where acquired by the present ownerPrivate CollectionPaolozzi had his first solo show in early 1947 at The Mayor Gallery. With a number of successful sales and appreciative reviews, Paolozzi set off for Paris. He rented a room for £1 per month on the Île Saint-Louis, and found there much to inspire him, not only in the contemporary art scene but also in the wonderful museum collections that the city had to offer. He absorbed such diverse influences as Dada and Surrealism, viewed Dubuffet's collection of art brut, and also became acquainted with important contemporaries such as Giacometti. The present lot is typical of the early gouaches and collages he produced while staying there, taking inspiration from popular entertainment in the form of newspaper stalls, lottery and shooting booths - 'gagner ou perdre' translates as 'win or lose' - and transforms this simple decoration into a new and sophisticated abstract language. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The twins performed under their stage name the 'Ralli Twins', as well as modelling for a dressmaking establishment. Minton showed nine oils and ten gouaches, which were based on the quays and wharves around Southwark and Bankside and earnt him the title of 'urban romantic'. The exhibition was well-received by the critics with Michael Middleton commenting in The Spectator that the Artist had 'translated an essentially elegiac vision into a closely knit architecture of great firmness and richness without the loss of poetic intensity' (F. Spalding, John Minton, Dance Till The Stars Come Down, Lund Humphries, London, 2005, p. 102). A series of commissions followed this success and in May 1947 he drew London Docks for an issue of Our Time. Following this, Minton was asked to complete three pictures of the river Thames for publication in the July 1947 issue of Lilliput Magazine. The present lot is one of the three black and white wash drawings that the Artist first produced before being asked by Kaye Webb, the magazine's art editor, to rethink his designs in colour. Along with the present lot, Minton's wash drawings included St Paul's from the River and Blackfriars Bridge. Minton's close relationship with the river Thames would continue throughout his career and in 1949 he executed illustrations for John Herbert's essay 'London's Port and River' in the book Flower of Cities before completing one of London Transport's most famous posters titled London's River: Pool of London in 1951 (three thousand posters were created for the underground from this gouache). This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 7

John Wells (British, 1907-2000)Relief on a Seventh Module (Homage to Ben and Gorin) oil on carved wood in a perspex box frame61 x 122cm (24 x 48 1/16in).Please note that this work bears signature and number 'John Wells/4.7bb' (on a Wills Lane Gallery label verso)Conceived in 1970Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Wills Lane Gallery, St. Ives, where acquired by the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.The present work is from two editions of 7 with 3 artist's proofs. It was constructed by Graham Potter in collaboration with John Wells and Henry Gilbert, Wills Lane Gallery, St. Ives and is three times the size of the original. As the title suggests, this carved wood relief by John Wells pays respect to both the artists Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) and Jean Gorin (1899-1981). Nicholson famously altered the visual language of modern British art in 1934 with his first painted, pure white, carved reliefs, which in themselves were a development of his coloured reliefs begun the year before. Nicholson wrote to his wife, Winifred, following a visit to see her in Paris during 1933 that his aeroplane journey home had a profound effect on him. He referenced the white clouds more than once, and Jeremy Lewison comments:'The ability to pass from one level to another with abruptness and precision, bypassing intermediate planes, is a quality found in Nicholson's reliefs and was paralleled in his description of the flight. The purity of the white cloud, moreover, may have had some bearing on his next major advance, the making of white reliefs.' (J. Lewison, Ben Nicholson, Phaidon Press, London, p. 16)John Wells was acquainted with Ben Nicholson from a young age, having met both him and Christopher Wood in St Ives in 1928 as a student at the age of twenty-one. He became familiar with his work, although Wells's own ambition to become an artist was initially delayed for financial reasons and he became a doctor, working from the Scilly Isles until after the war.Where Relief on a Seventh Module (Homage to Ben and Gorin) deviates from Ben Nicholson's white reliefs is in its introduction of the projecting shelf and upright form it supports. Here, Wells is showing his admiration for the French neoplastic painter and sculptor, Jean Gorin, a disciple of Piet Mondrian, who developed his idiosyncratic wall reliefs in the late 1920s; although these were polychrome, unlike the purity of Nicholson's work and the present lot. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
