TOWNSHEND CHARLES VERE FERRERS: (1861-1924) British Army officer who led the disastrous first British expedition against Baghdad during WWI. Signed 9 x 11 sepia photograph by Townshend, the image depicting the Army officer in full length pose, outdoor, wearing his uniform. Signed in bold black ink to the lower clear area of the image `C.V.F. Townshend Major-General´ dated Jhanzi India, 20th November 1913 in his hand. Townshend was appointed Commander of Jhanzi Brigade in India in 1913. Some overall age wear with very small tears to the left edge. The photograph has been neatly affixed to a slightly larger cardboard. Together with Signed piece Charles V.F. Townshend M.G. The 3.5 x 1.7 piece has been affixed to a white postcard, beneath a 2.2 x 2.7 photograph, also affixed, the image depicting Townshend in a head and shoulders pose wearing his uniform. G, 2. £100-150

[DACHAU]: A.L.S., on a postal card, Dachau, 20th November 1938, to Anton Oesterreich, in German. The card is sent by `Schutzhaftjude´ ("Jew protective custody") Kurt Oesterreich, son of the correspondent, `Block 30 - Room 1´ in Dachau. The prisoner writes to his father in Vienna and reports about his situation, stating `Am fine, you can be sure about this´, further asking to receive if possible a postal transfer of 15 RM to the following concentration camp address `Konzentrationslager, Dachau 3 K, lock 30, Stube 1´, and precise that it has to be sent to his name and birth date for identification. Kurt concludes saying `Please answer to me by postcard..´ and sends his regards to a woman. To the verso, the card bears six printed rules conditions regarding prisoners post mail in the Dachau concentration camp, and an ink stamp of Dachau dated. Some overall ae wear and creasing. G £100-150 The Dachau concentration camp was the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in Germany in 1933 by Heinrich Himmler, and later commanded by Rudolf Hoess.

SKORZENY OTTO: (1908-1975) Austrian SS-Standartenführer of World War II. T.L.S., Otto Skorzeny, two pages, 4to, Madrid, 17th April 1972, to Miguel Rojas Martin-More, in Spanish. The letter is Skorzeny's retained carbon copy and concerns an employee of Skorzeny's, Jose Gonzalez Haro, a gardener, with whom Skorzeny has not been satisfied, in terms of the work that he has done, and questioning whether or not he really has to pay him the full salary for a period of three months. Together with a second T.L.S., with his initials O Sk., one page, 4to, Madrid, 10th May 1972, also to Miguel Rojas Martin-More, in Spanish. The letter is another retained carbon copy on the same subject matter. Also including several other carbon copies of related letters. All are stapled together at the upper left corner and have multiple file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signatures. Further including four signed blank folio sheets of paper, with different names, by Skorzeny. Each with a different printed heading, the first "Dipl.Ing. Otto Skorzeny, Madrid" and the three others being "Dipl. Ing. Rolf O. Steinbauer, Madrid". Skorzeny using his two different identities signs (`Otto Skorzeny´) and (`Rolf O. S Steinbauer´), in blue ink to the lower right borders. Four blank signed documents left to his wife to be used in case of necessity. The Skorzeny signature one with creases to the corners, not affecting the signature. Further more including a small selection of other letters and printed ephemera etc., relating to Skorzeny, some signed by his wife Ilse, a small printed 8vo World Health Organisation Vaccination Card issued in Spain to Otto Skorzeny and bearing his name, 1965, a brown leather wallet etc.. DIETL EDUARD: (1890-1944) German General of World War II. One of Hitler's favourite generals, he was the first German soldier to receive the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, awarded to recognize extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Signed postcard photograph, the image depicting Dietl in a head and shoulders pose, wearing his uniform. Signed (´Dietl´) in bold black ink to the lower partially clear area of the image, and dated 4th April 1941 in his hand. Small crease to the lower side of the photograph. VG. £100-150

KAMIKAZES: Small selection of signed documents by few of the most famous Japanese kamikazes, comprising Mitsuo Fuchida (1902-1976) Captain of the Japanese Navy, and bomber Aviator during WWII. Best known for leading the first air wave attacks on Pearl Harbour on 7 December 1941. Signed 12 x 8.5 copy of a map showing the Kamikazes route to Pearl Harbour. Signed twice, in bold blue ink, in occidental and Japanese characters, to a clear area of the image; Saburo Sakai (1916-2000) Japanese naval Aviator and flying ace of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II . Signed 12 x 11 photograph by Sakai, the image depicting an aircraft fighter. Signed twice, in bold black ink, in occidental and Japanese characters, to a clear area of the image; and Ryuji Nagatsuka (1924- ) Japanese Kamikaze survivor. TITTERTON ERNEST: (1916-1990) English Nuclear Physicist who worked on Radar systems for the British Admiralty during World War II. Titterton later joined the British Scientific Mission in America, working on the development of the first nuclear weapons, and was a senior member of the timing group which fired the first nuclear weapon at Alamogordo, New Mexico, July 1945. Autograph Statement Signed, E W Titterton, one page, 4to, n.p., 2nd January 1953. Titterton provides his answers to three questions relating to Albert Einstein, in full, '1. Einstein is one of the greatest scientists of all time. His work is at the foundations of modern physics. He is also a great humanitarian. 2. He ranks with the greatest of the worlds scientists [John] Dalton, [James Clerk] Maxwell, [Michael] Faraday, [Max] Planck, [Ernest] Rutherford, [Louis] de Broglie. His work, and through it, his name will live forever. 3. Niels Bohr, E[nrico] Fermi, C[ecil] F. Powell, P[aul] A. M. Dirac, F[reeman] J. Dyson, Felix Bloch.' Signed at the conclusion. DEUTSCH MARTIN: (1917-2002) Austrian-American Physicist, involved in the Manhattan Project from 1943. A good Autograph Statement Signed, Martin Deutsch, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (annotated 22nd January 1954). Deutsch writes his answers to three questions relating to Albert Einstein, in part, '1. Einstein is without doubt the one among living physicists whose work has had the greatest influence on the development of modern physics. 2. Since all of modern atomic physics is unthinkable without Einstein's contribution my very field of work could hardly have existed without his contribution….3. Einstein's name, with those of [Ernest] Rutherford and N.[iels] Bohr is the epitome of physics of the first half of the 20th century, just as [James Clerk] Maxwell and [Michael] Faraday represent classical electromagnetism'. Signed at the conclusion. GONZAGA ELEONORA: (1598-1655) Holy Roman Empress 1651-57, second wife of Ferdinand II, Archduchess consort of Austria, Queen of Germany and Queen consort of Hungary and Bohemia. L.S., Eleonora, one page, folio, Ratisbona, 19th October 1630, to Prince Eduardo, Duke of Parma, in Latin. The Empress refers to the letter received, sent last 17th September, informing about the Prince birth, and states `We are joyful learning about this benevolent providence birth, which was deeply desired; we wish your son a long life and happiness in his achievements..´. With integral address leaf, bearing a large attractive paper seal with the “Eleonora Regina” embossed coat of arms. VG   £150-200. Eduardo I Farnesio (1612-1646) Duke of Parma. Eduardo I married Margarita of Medici in 1628, both aged 16, and had their first child Renato II Farnesio (1630-1694) Ranuccio II, Duke of Parma, the 17th September 1630.

ORLEANS FERDINAND OF: (1844-1910) Duc of Alençon, grandson of French King Louis Philippe. An interesting set of four Ls.S., Ferdinand d´Orleans, one letter of two pages, and one page the rest, 4to, Claremont, from 19th December 1860 to 16th May 1861, to the Colonel of the Hussars Cavalry Regiment of the Princess, in Spanish. A young Ferdinand d´Orleans, just arrived to Spain from school in Scotland, and not allowed to go back to France as a Royal family member, enters the military school in Segovia, Spain. On the first letter Ferdinand thanks his Colonel for his welcome, and states `I am the one who feels proud serving such a glorious Regiment which has recently obtained laureate conquests in Africa…It is a honour to wear such a glorious uniform…´. On the second letter Ferdinand renounces to his Second-Lieutenant salaries and indicates `Please share them out freely between the Regiment members you will consider and in the most fair and useful way..´. On the third and fourth letter Ferdinand thanks his Colonel for the Queen´s letter received, authorizing him to choose the military camp where to serve in order to allow him to pursue and finish his studies in the city of Segovia. A few years later he would be offered the crown of Spain but he rejected the offer. A few small foxing stains only to the first letter, otherwise VG, 4 £80-100

VICTORIA: (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901. An unusual original pencil drawing by Queen Victoria, unsigned, one page, 8vo, n.p. (Buckingham Palace), n.d. (2nd May 1846), on a sheet of stationery bearing an attractive red, gold and blue coloured Royal coat of arms. The Queen has drawn a simple image of a lady's face, identifying three points with the numbers 1, 2 and 3. Beneath the drawing the Queen has added some notes, in full, '1+ A very little more closed by the eye lid. 2+ The eye brow a very little more raised. 3. The front of the nose less thick'. With the integral leaf bearing an A.N.S. Joseph Lee, by the artist Joseph Lee, in full, 'Buckingham Palace, May 2nd 1846. Her Majesty this day drew & wrote the within as instructions for me to alter the Enamel of the Duchess de Nemours'. Rare in this form. Some light overall age wear and a few minor, neat, professional repairs to the verso of the folds. EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A good A.L.S., Edward P, as Prince of Wales, two pages, 8vo, St. James' Palace, 9th May 1921, to Leila Gough-Calthorpe, on the Prince's personal monogrammed stationery. The Prince writes to thank his correspondent and the Commander-in-Chief for their hospitality and for making him very comfortable, adding that he is sorry his stay was so short and remarking 'I would far sooner have remained at Portsmouth these next few days so as to escape all these "Japs" in London who have come at a very inopportune moment & are really a great nuisance just now!' Accompanied by the original envelope (stamp torn away) hand addressed by the Prince to The Hon. Leila Gough-Calthorpe at Admiralty House, Portsmouth, and signed ('EP') by Edward with his initials in the lower left corner. About EX. £400-600 Effie 'Leila' Gough-Calthorpe (c.1868-?) Wife of Sir Somerset Gough-Calthorpe (1865-1937) British Admiral of the Fleet, Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth, from 1920. Crown Prince Hirohito (1901-1989) visited England during his six month tour of Europe in May 1921, becoming the first Japanese Crown Prince to travel abroad. Upon his return to Japan Hirohito became Regent in place of his ailing father. The Prince of Wales accompanied the Crown Prince on a number of official engagements including the inspection of a Guard of Honour of World War I heroes at the Guildhall and a carriage procession along Fleet Street in London.

PRINCE CHARLES OF BELGIUM: (1903-1983) Count of Flanders, second son of Albert I, King of the Belgians. Prince Regent of Belgium 1944-50, serving in lieu of his older brother King Leopold III. Rare T.L.S., Charles Prince Regent of Belgium, one page, folio, Bruxelles, 27th January 1945, to Lieutenant Colonel Gualberto Villarroel, Constitutional President of the Republic of Bolivia, in French. The typed letter entitles `Leopold III, King of the Belgians´, and bears to the heading an embossed purple crown and two lions. Prince Charles signs at the foot of the document in his capacity as Prince Regent of Belgium and adds in his hand `In the name of His Majesty King Leopold III´. The letter refers to the recently appointed President of Bolivia, sending him congratulations and wishing him and his Country prosperity. Countersigned by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Paul-Henri Spaak. Very small holes and tears to the left edge, due to previous filing, not affecting the text or signature. VG £100-150 Leopold III (1901-1983) King of the Belgians 1934-51 when he abdicated in favour of the heir apparent, his son Baudouin. In 1944 Leopold was declared incompetent to rule, his brother Prince Charles becoming Prince Regent of Belgium. At the time of the present letter King Leopold was in Germany, deported by Nazis. Gualberto Villarroel López (1908-1946) Head of State of Bolivia 1943-46. A reformist with fascist sympathies. On 21st July 1946, anti-government crowds took control of the Palace of Government, and although Villarroel announced his resignation, he was assassinated. Villarroel's body was tossed from a balcony where the crowds proceeded to hang it from a lamp-post opposite the Palace. Villarroel is also known as “El Presidente Colgado” ("The Hanged President") and has since been revered by the majority of the Bolivian population as a martyr and hero. Paul-Henri Spaak (1899-1972) Belgian Statesman. Prime Minister of Belgium 1938-39, 1946 & 1947-49. First President of the United Nations 1946-47, and Secretary General of NATO 1957-61.

SOPHIE OF WURTTEMBERG: (1818-1877) Queen of the Netherlands as first wife of King William III. L.S., Sophie, one page, 4to, La Haye, 13th May, 1877, to Claudius Popelin, in French. The Queen states `I have just received the book that you have sent me, I thank you and already promise to myself the pleasure of enjoying it.´ A letter dated only few weeks before passing away. Small overall age wear, otherwise VG £100-150 Claudius Popelin (1825-1892) French Poet and Painter.

OSCAR I: (1799-1859) King of Sweden and Norway 1844-59. Born Joseph François Oscar Bernadotte, son of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, first ruler of the current Royal House. Napoleon was he's godfather. L.S., Oscar, one page, folio, Stockholm, 18th August 1845, to Ferdinand II King of the Two Sicilies, in Latin. The King sends his congratulations and on behalf of all the Royal family on the occasion of the baptism given to Prince Ludovico Maria Ferdinando Petro. Further sending his best wishes for future and for the young Prince. VG. £80-100 Maria Theresa of Austria (1816-1867) Second wife of Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies. Prince Louis Maria of Bourbon-Two Sicilies (1838-1886) Count of Trani, the eldest son of Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies and his second wife Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria.

MANUEL II OF PORTUGAL: (1889-1932) King of Portugal 1908-10. Known as "The Unfortunate". Last King of Portugal, & AMELIE OF ORLEANS (1865-1951) Princess of Orleans and Queen Consort of Portugal. Two A.D.S., Comte d´Ourem, and Amelie, the documents being two embarkation cards to and from Calais, dated in Dover, 8th September 1923 and 2nd July 1931. The partially printed documents are fulfilled by the King and Queen, the first writing `Ourem Manuel´ and the Queen `Reine Amelie de Portugal - Marie Amelie´, and both writing as address in the United Kingdom `Fulwell Park Twickenham´. With immigration dated ink stamps to the verso. G, 2 100-150 Manuel II was in exile since 1910, and often used some of his peerages looking for discretion. He was the Count of Ourem, having inherited it after his brother´s assassination.

SIHANOUK NORODOM: (1922-2012) King of Cambodia 1941-55 & 1993-2004, and Head of State 1960-70 & 1993, & MONINEATH SIHANOUK NORODOM (1936- ) Queen Consort of Cambodia 1952-55 & 1993-2004. Two signed greetings cards with autograph inscriptions to the inside folding white stiff, 8vo card, in French. The first, featuring a colour 6 x 4 photograph depicting Norodom Sihanouk standing in a half length pose, alongside a printed greeting. The King adds in his hand an inscription to the card `For Mr. Frantz Hagnere. N Sihanouk. King of Cambodia´. The second featuring a colour 3.6 x 5 photograph of the Queen, seated, in a head and shoulders pose, alongside a printed greeting. The Queen adds in her hand an inscription to the upper corner clear area of the photograph `For Annick Doidy, Monineath´ adding also ´the date in her hand, June 2001. Together with three vintage unsigned 5 x 7 photographs, two of them corresponding to Norodom Sihanouk visit to Paris, alongside French President Vincent Auriol (1884-1966), the third showing Auriol alongside Bao Dai (1913-1997) Emperor of Vietnam. [ALEXANDER I]: (1777-1825) Emperor of Russia 1801-25. An unusual document of Alexander I, unsigned, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., in French. The printed document being an announcement, stating “Alexander I – Emperor of all Russias - Decorated with the Grand-Eagle Cross of the Legion d´Honneur – Born 23rd December 1777”. Accompanied by the original envelope, hand written, in Cyrillic, `To His Highness, the Beloved Landgrave Hesse-Darmstadt. Our friendly and Amiable Relation´. Bearing a red wax seal in very fine condition, with the crowned double headed eagle oath. VG  £200-300 Alexander I was awarded with the Grand-Eagle Cross of the Legion d´Honneur in July 1807. The treaty of Tilsit was signed by Napoleon I and Alexander I, 9th July 1807. Several weel-known paintings have reproduced that day with Emperor Alexander I wearing the ceremonial red sash of the Legion d´Honneur. Louis I (1753-1830) Grand Duke of Hesse. Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, as Louis X, later first Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine.

ZAKREVSKY ARSENY: (1783-1865) Russian Statesman and Minister of the Interior 1828-31 under Nicholas I, & POTAPOV ALEKSEI (1772-1847) Russian General, Commander of Nicholas Pavlovich headquarters. A set of two very interesting and excellent content historical letters signed, the first being L.S., Aleksei Potapov, with a lengthy autograph postscript, three pages, 4to, Saint Petersburg, 1st December 1825, to Arseny Andreievich [Zakrevsky], in Cyrillic. The letter, on a black bordered mourning paper, is dated the day of the Emperor´s Alexander I death, and states `By the order of His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Nikolai Pavlovich the following information must be communicated to His Highness.Whatarrangements have been done about the administration of the oath of allegiance by the Troops of the Finnish Independent Corps under your command; Have Finnish Troops already sworn allegiance; and when are you planning to send the communication of this oath and of the other Troops of the Finnish Corps. His Highness wants it to be done as soon as possible, specially by the Finnish Troops under your command.´. Potapov further adds a postscriptum saying `His Highness wants the oath of allegiance to His Majesty Konstantin Pavlovitch to be done as soon as possible. I would immediately communicate it to his Highness.´ The letter is addressed to Zakrevsky in his capacity as Commander of the Finnish armies. Written in another hand to the upper part of the letter ` Received on December 3, 1825 at 11:30 a.m.´. The second letter being a L.S., Arseny Zakrevsky, six pages, 4to, n.p., 3rd December 1825, to Aleksei Nikolaevich [Potapov], in Cyrillic. Zakrevski starts saying `Answer to Potapov´s letter, received 1st December, directed to His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Nikolai Pavlovich.´ and refers to the news received `I have been informed about His Majesty Emperor´s Alexander Pavlovich death by the State Secretary of the Grand Duchy of Finland Count Rehbinder.´. Zakrevsky continues with a lengthy response explaining all steps performed with full detail and starts with a very interesting information saying `On 30th November, at 5 A.M, we received the Minister of War dispatch, dated 27th November….with the decree and form of the oath.´ and ` The same day I did communicate to the Troops of the Finnish Independent Corps the order about the  oath of allegiance, and suggested to the Imperial Senate of Finland that the oath of allegiance to His Imperial Majesty Emperor Konstantin Pavlovich should be sworn in the Senate and all over Finland.´  Zakrevsky continues referring to all steps taken to get the oath of allegiance and ends with `A package under the number 3534 in the name of His Majesty Emperor Konstantin Pavlovich has been sent on December 1 together with my report number 3533 about the administration of oath of allegiance of the Senate of Finland and other Helsinki departments and officers,  and about the command to fulfill this duty in the rest of Finland.´ An interesting reference to Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich when Zakrevsky ends his letter referring to him as “His Imperial Majesty Emperor Konstantin Pavlovich”. The two letters are tied together at the left edge with the original thin coloured ribbon. VG   £800-1200 Alexander Pavlovich (1777-1825) Alexander I, Emperor of Russia 1801-25. Died 1st December 1825. Nicholas Pavlovich (1796-1855) Nicholas I, Emperor of Russia 1825-55. Konstantin Pavlovich (1779-1831) Second son of Emperor Paul I. He was the Tsesarevich of Russia throughout the reign of his elder brother Emperor Alexander I. The Grand Duke Konstantin had secretly renounced to the throne in 1823. This two interesting letters show how a day prior the Emperor´s death, his brother Nicholas presses Zakrevsky in order to get urgently the Finnish troops oath of allegiance to his elder brother Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich, the Tsesarevich, as he wasn´t aware of Konstantin renounce. For 25 days, from 1st to 26th December, he was known as His Imperial Majesty Konstantin I Emperor of all Russias. This succession controversy became the cause of the Decembrist Revolt.

ORLOV ALEXEY FYODOROVICH: (1787-1862) Prince Orlov, former Military, he was one of the most important Russian Diplomats of his time, close to Tsar Nicholas I. A.L., one page, 4to, Paris, 17th May 1832, in French. The letter being a report about two important questions asked to an unknown personage and the answers received, the whole related to international delegations. Orlov states `First question: Do you accept to be a member of the delegation? He responds that he accepts, because he has never rejected the occasions had to serve his Homeland and his compatriots, above all on such grievous moment…´. Prince Orlov would soon after be appointed Ambassador at Constantinople and later in charge of the infamous "Third Section" Secret Police. VG. £100-150

NESSELRODE KARL: (1780-1862) Russian Count and Diplomat. An attractive D.S., Comte Nesselrode, three pages, written to the first, third and fourth, on a 14.5 x 9 folio, Saint Petersburg, 17th July 1845, to Yakov Tolstoy, in Cyrillic. The partially printed document being a title-passport, with the heading `By the Grace of God - Nicholas I - Emperor and Autocrat of All Russias´, in favour of Yakov Tolstoy, High Messenger of the Emperor, and states `It is announced, by this title, to each and everyone, and to whom it may concern, that Yakov Tolstoy, Collegiate Counselor and Knight of the Ministry of National Education, is sent as special messenger by Our order through Berlin and Frankfurt to Paris.´ and further continues `For this purpose We friendly ask all the high Regions―according to ranks and merits of those to whom this might be shown― and to our military and civilian commanders, who WE most graciously order not only to let pass the aforesaid Collegiate Counselor and Cavalier Yakov Tolstoy freely and without restraint, but also to show him benevolence. In return, We promise to recompense each high Region. This Our order will be obeyed by Our subjects. Kaunas, 21 July 1845.´ signed beneath by the Civil Governor of Kaunas, N. Kalkatin. The document bears a red wax seal to the front in very fine condition, alongside a paper seal affixed. To third page, a partially printed text, being the German translation of the front text, Signed in another hand `Graf von Nesselrode´. To the fourth page, showing five different annotations, with signatures beneath and four ink stamps, corresponding to the different frontiers Tolstoy did cross, all bearing location and date, three in Cyrillic, one in German and the last in French, reaching Paris the 10th August 1845. Folded, with small, minor overall age. Edges slightly trimmed, otherwise VG £250-350 Yakov Tolstoi, Russian Diplomat.

ALEXANDER II: (1818-1881) Emperor of Russia 1855-81. Assassinated. D.S., Alexander, in Cyrillic, two pages, folio, Kransoye Selo, 17th July 1867, in Cyrillic. The partially printed document being a Decree to the Chapter of Russian Imperial Orders stating `In recognition for the excellent and diligent service given, the officers listed below have been appointed with the Imperial Order of Saint Stanislav´. The merit award given by the Tsar Alexander II, to a short list of five officers, reads that first of them, Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Gerasimov, has received the 2nd class order of the Imperial Order of Saint Stanislav, and the remaining four the 3rd class one, and concludes with `Thereby, we order the Chapter to award these Knights with the Orders and Deeds´. Countersigned at the foot of the document by the Minister of war, General Miliutin. Two small tears to the right edge not affecting the text or signature, and two extremely small paper loss to the left edge, otherwise VG £800-1200 Dmitry Milyutin (1816-1912) Russian Count. Minister of War 1861-81 under Emperor Alexander II and last Field Marshal of Imperial Russia.

VG £100-150 Madeleine Guillemin (1853-1930) Countess of Lannes de Montebello as spouse of Count Gustave Lannes de Montebello (1838-1907), grandson of French Marshal Jean Lannes (1769-1809). Count Gustave was appointed Ambassador of France to Saint Petersburg from 1891, and was very close to the Romanov Imperial family. At his request, Nicholas II acted in 1901 as godfather of his first grandson.
