MARGARET DURRELL: A small handwritten sketch book with writings in pencil by Margaret Durrell recounting 'Sommiere revisited' and a visit to Lawrnce Durrell in September 1990 just a few weeks before his death and describing her last conversations with him, later handwritten pages dated Bournemouth November 7th 1990 probably written later as recollections of that day,. "Across the great divide of space from Sommiere to Bournemouth - the telephone rang. A soft voice spoke, the French accent was familiar: 'Margaret is that you?' 'Yes' I was delighted to recognise Francoise. "I am sorry - Larry has died and as you are the most introverted member of the family - I am telling you first. I burst into tears - and was overwhelmed with sadness - a sense of loss." Later pages recount the news of the death of Gerald and other recollections together with photographs.

Wiltshire Regiment First War Pair and Death Plaque, to 2nd Lieutenant Charles Trevor Bishop, Wiltshire Regiment, framed and glazed in a fine contemporary fretwork frame, mounted with a bronze Officer’s cap badge, the rear of the frame mounted with the King and Country Commemorative Scroll. 2nd Lieutenant Charles Trevor Bishop was killed on the 29th of March 1917 and this is recorded in the War Diary of the 5th Battallion Wiltshire Regiment at Palm Tree Post Mesopotamia and his name is recorded on the Basra Memorial.

COOPER. 7/R.FUS., the British War Medal and Victory Medal marked L-11886 W.O. CL. 2 C.S. COOPER. R. FUS. Supplement to the London Gazette, 5, December, 1918. L/11886 C./S./M. C.S. Cooper, 7th Bn., R. Fus. (Tottenham, N.). For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during two attacks on a wood and a village. His company was badly cut up, and all the officers had become casualties. He reorganised the remnants and led them forward to the final objective with great determination. Working under very adverse conditions and in the face of intense fire this warrant officer set a fine example in maintaining the discipline and morale of the company.

Bearing old lot label for Sotheby’s Hannover Auction, Lot no. 4356. House of Hannover Schloss Marienberg. It is believed that these items were worn for the Funeral of Queen Victoria’s husband Albert.

George Romney (1734-1802) - Oil painting - Three quarters length portrait of Stratford Canning (1786-1880) wearing a blue coat and yellow waistcoat, seated in an armchair, relined canvas 50ins x 40ins, in gilt bead and acanthus leaf pattern frame Provenance : Frant Court Sale, 29th October 1908. The portrait is mentioned in Roberts' annotated catalogue - T.H. Ward and W. Roberts - "Romney - Essay and Catalogue Raisonne", published in New York 1904. Provenance : Sir Philip and Lady Haldin, formerly of Lympne Place, Lympne, Hythe, Kent and thence by family descent Note : George Romney also painted a portrait of Mrs Stratford Canning and Child, which is now with the National Trust for Scotland at Fyvie Castle. The latter painting had also been at Frant Court but was sold privately by the family to Agnews prior to the sale. Stratford Canning subsequently became 1st Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe K.G., G.C.B.,P.C. and was a British Diplomat and Politician, best known as long time British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. A cousin of the Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister, George Canning, he was the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister-Plenipotentiary to the United States between 1820 and 1824 and held his first appointment as Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire between 1825 and 1828. He intermittently represented several constituencies in Parliament between 1828 and 1842. In 1841 he was one again appointed Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, a position which he held for the next seventeen years. Canning came to be seen as one of the leading figures in Constantinople as British influence over the area increased and the Turks became viewed increasingly as British clients. Nevertheless despite his illustrious diplomatic career, Canning's hopes of high political office were frequently dashed.

The six games which it was designed were to be "amusing and interesting" and also to teach "the fundamental principles of the signs of music"

During an extremely critical period when the situation was by no means clear, he kept up continual fire with his battery and rendered invaluable support to the Infantry, although his Brigade was exposed to constant heavy fire and suffering many casualties for two days. His behaviour during this period was beyond praise and it was in great measure due to his coolness, courage and personality that fire was kept up." (Gazetted 14th November 1916). Bar awarded for the Battle of Ypres 1917. And with three certificates giving details of Mentions in Despatches, and a small selection of paperwork, some in his handwriting, and a black and white photograph of him in uniform at his wedding, and a typewritten autobiography of his life.

DENIS MITCHELL. 'Buryan.' Bronze sculpture on slate base. Initialled, titled, numbered 0/7 & dated 1976 to the base. Height including base 33cm. Provenance: Purchased in 1989 by the late Ian McPherson, direct from Denis Mitchell. Sold with a note of provenance from Mr McPherson's daughter, along with the 11 photographs mentioned in the note, which includes seven of Denis Mitchell with this sculpture. The edition number '0' may indicate this was the artist's own copy. CONDITION REPORTS: This bronze is an artist's proof I believe. The back of the bronze has a slightly non-patinated, textured surface, (see photo) which I feel sure is not present in the other 7 cast. The sculpture is in good, original condition. I believe that this was the first casting of 'Buryan' made for Denis Mitchell, which he kept at home.
