The following 10 lots from perhaps the best collection of important early, mainly London & other maker`s, rods to have come to the market. ROD: Ex rare Ustonson Makers to His Majesty Temple Bar London, 4 piece valise travel rod, sections approx 27" long, the butt with swollen handle, pinned front brass collar, hand made reel rings over recessed reel seat, fully engraved butt cap, brass ferrules, top 3 sections black washed, the rod lacks rings but due to its rarity and importance is worthy of refurbishment. Onesimus Ustonson c1760-1855 is the first fully researched London maker with Royal warrant, few of his reels are ever seen and even fewer rods have came to the market, to our knowledge this is the only Ustonson valise rod in existence outside the example held in Kew Palace forming part of the King George 1V fishing tackle outfit. Further information refer to Turner, G – "Fishing Tackle A Collectors Guide" pages 34-44
An Egyptian wood figure of the cat god Bast found at Bubastis, 671 -527 BC. 5 1/2`` high Note: the provenance of this wood figure gives it a special place in the history of Egyptology. From the collection of renowned orientalist W.G. Leitner, founder of Britain`s first mosque in Woking. Acquired from Ridolfo Vittorio Lanzone (Lanzoni) author of the Dizionario di Mitologia Egizia (1881) reputedly excavated by him at Bubastis in 1842. When Naville reported on his formal excavation of Bubastis (1887 -9), he referred to objects from the site already in the collection of Lanzone. The present lot may therefore be one of the first objects removed from Bubastis in the 19th century. See handwritten paper included,
From the same military family`s Estate, a Superb Study of a Fox in Silver ably capturing the wily animals movement as it leaps in flight over thorn branches on a rocky base and mounted on an ebonised wood plinth, bearing a crested Silver Plaque inscribed ``15th The King`s Hussars Point to Point Race, 14th April,1890, won by Mr. Harcourt Wood`s b.m. ``Rocket``, 6 yrs. Owner purchased with a legacy bequeathed by the late Captain the Honble. A. Manners, 15th Hussars for the first point to point Race of the Regiment in Ireland``. Bearing the stamp, Elkington & Co., maker `F.E.`, London 1889, 4437 gms. approx. 21 3/4`` long overall, 7 3/4`` high (11 7/8`` incl. of plinth). It may be of significance that the bay mare was named `Rocket` in view of the events referred to in the description of the previous lot in respect of the Battle of Leipzig.
An Ormolu finished framed appealing oval Portrait Miniature, 2 7/8`` x 2 3/8`` approx. of a young girl holding a kitten in her arms and understood to be Fanny (Frances) daughter of Thomas Wood (21 April, 1777 -26 January, 1860) who was an English Tory politician for Breconshire who sat in the House of Commons from 1806 -1847. He was the son of Thomas Wood and his wife, Mary Williams, daughter and heiress of Sir. Edward Williams of Llangoed Castle and the grandson of Thomas Wood (1708 -1799). The family had considerable Estates in Middleham, Yorkshire, Gwerryfed (Talgarth) and Littleton and Astlam in Middlesex. He married Lady Caroline Stewart, daughter of Robert Stewart, first Marquess of Londonderry. Wood and his wife enjoyed the friendship of members of the Royal Family. A new team, based South of the Tyne were formed , Gateshead, and they replaced South Shields ( North of the Tyne) in Division 3 North in 1930-31. CARDIFF RUGBY LEAGUE 1951 Cardiff home programme v Widnes, 22/8/51, at Penarth Road Stadium, first home game for Cardiff Rugby League Club in their only season in the Rugby League. A crowd of 2,500 saw Cardiff lose the game 27-10 and in this season Cardiff finished 30th of the 31 Clubs with a record of 5 wins and 31 defeats. As a result they were wound up at the end of the season. Previously Cardiff had been members of the Welsh Rugby League which was formed in 1949.Other founder members of the Welsh Rugby League were Amman Valley, Llanelli, Aberavon, Bridgend, Ystradgynlais, Neath and Pontarddulais. Cardiff were champions in 49/50, and Llanelli in 50/51 after which Cardiff were elected to the Rugby Football League. The Welsh Rugby League also folded at the end of the 51-2 season as Union was too strong for League to take a foothold and it was 1981 before Cardiff Blue Dragons were formed to play at Ninian Park. This programme v Widnes is a four page issue with neat score, scorers, attendance, very slight fold. Good
