Entomology.- Fabricius (Johann Christian) Systema entomologiae..., first edition, title with woodcut vignette and repair to lower outer corner, heavily foxed, modern roan-backed boards, uncut, original paste-paper wrappers bound in (attached with tape), [Hagen 220.2], 8vo, Flensburg & Leipzig, Korte, 1775.⁂ Fabricius (1745-1808) was a Danish zoologist and economist, and pupil of Linnaeus who become one of the most important entomologists of the 18th century, naming nearly 10,000 different species and establishing the basis for modern insect classification. He worked primarily with arthropods and was a specialist on insects, classifying many spiders including the black widow. This was his first major work.

NO RESERVE Trees.- Withers (W[illiam]) A Letter to Sir Walter Scott...exposing certain fundamental errors in his late Essay on planting, and containing observations on the pruning and thinning of woods, and maxims for profitable planting, first edition, occasional spotting or light staining, original printed wrappers, advertisements for other titles by the author to rear wrapper, small chip and split at foot of spine, but holding firm, lightly soiled, a good wide-margined copy, 8vo, Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1828.⁂ Rare in original printed wrappers. Withers owned two plantations near Holt in Norfolk. He objected to Scott's essays on planting in the Quarterly Review, accusing him of advocating the 'cheap, hole-digging, short-sighted Scotch system, which is calculated to bring upon those who adopt it only loss and disappointment.'. Scott had proposed a collection of his essays on planting and gardening, but late in 1828, perhaps as a result of Withers' criticism, he withdrew the proposal.

Quakers.- Bugg (Francis) The Picture of Quakerism drawn to the life. In two parts., 2 parts in 1, first edition, double-page letterpress within woodcut frame plate, lacking initial blank to part 2, title trimmed within border at foot, closely trimmed at head, occasional staining, mostly light apart from outer margin of k5&8, 19th century calf, rebacked in modern gilt calf with burgundy leather label, corners little worn, covers rubbed and scuffed, [Wing B5381; Sabin 9072; Smith I, p.337], Printed for, and are to be sold by W. Kettleby at the Bishop's-Head in St. Paul's Church-yard, and W. Rogers at the Sun in Fleet-street, 1697; and 3 others, Quakers, v.s. (4)⁂ Rare at auction. Bugg (1640-1727) was fined for attending a meeting of the Friends around 1675. He believed that the preacher Samuel Cater should be liable for his fine, as it was he who had encouraged him to attend. However, arbitrators disagreed. Consequently, he attended the yearly Quaker meeting in London, and there complained to William Penn that the Friends had refused him justice. He eventually left the Society in 1680 and began to write against Quakerism.
