An early 19th Century New Zealand Maori "Tiki Hei," whale bone Pendant, with carved native figure and typical body art, and inset eyes, approx. 13 cms (5") high. (1)* One theory of the origin of the hei-tiki suggests a connection with Tiki, the first man in Maori legend. According to Horatio Gordon Robley, there are two main ideas behind the symbolism of hei-tiki: they are either memorials to ancestors, or represent the goddess of childbirth, Hineteiwaiwa.

Stephen Catterton Smith, English / Irish R.H.A., 1806 - 1872Half-length "Portrait of John Alexander, A.M., High Sheriff of Carlow, 1824, M.P. for Carlow 1853 to 1859," and his wife, "Esther, nee Brinkly, eldest daughter of Matthew Brinkly of Parsonstown House, Co. Meath." a pair, O.O.C., 92cms x 72cms (36" x 28") both inscribed on reverse, in attractive contemporary gilt frames. The Tassagart & Milford House Megaloceros GiganteusAn important set of Prehistoric Giant Irish Elk Antlers & Skull, c. 12000 - 8000 BC, approx. 226cms (89") 7'5" (2.26 meters) with 18 points, mounted on a mahogany shield shaped plaque. (1)Provenance: Discovered by Islay Hamilton Verschoyle Campbell during his archeological research in the early 1900's in the West of Ireland. Formerly housed at Tassagart, Co. Dublin and moved subsequently to Milford House, Carlow.Irish Elk is the common name for a giant, extinct deer, Megaloceros Giganteus, characterized by enormous antlers. This is the largest deer known to have ever lived. Megaloceros Giganteus appeared for the first time about 400,000 years ago and disappeared about 11,000 years ago. It ranged from Ireland and Great Britain in Western Europe and as Far East as China and Siberia during the Late Pleistocene period. Elk Antlers are a statement item and were placed in many of the big country houses around Ireland.

Some staining throughout, wear, plates all appear to be present but plate VI badly deteriorated, what appears to be plate VIII is only part complete, missing title, shows military encampments which would be in keeping with the chapter, and slotted in at Finis of first book and before and attached to title page of logarithm tables. GEORGE ROBERT LEFTWICH (1846-1929) BritishPersimmon With John Watts UpOil on canvas, signed, inscribed Newmarket and dated 1896, inscribed to verso, framed and glazed. 49.5 x 39 cm. Note: Persimmon (1893-1908) was a British thoroughbred racehorse and sire, bred by his owner The Prince of Wales, and trained throughout his career by Richard Marsh at his Egerton House Stable at Newmarket. In 1896, when this portrait was painted, his major wins included the Epsom Derby, the St Leger and the Jockey Club Stakes. His win at the Derby was the first royal victory for more than a century and his winning time of 2 minutes 42 seconds broke the race record by a full second. CONDITION REPORTS: Generally good, expected wear, crack to glazing, uninspected behind glass, some crazing and slight lifting visible.

Fine King George V Government dispatch box of rectangular form with red Morocco leather covering, gilt embossed crowned GR V Royal cipher to lid and 'Dardanelles Commission' and 'The Rt Hon Sir William Pickford', gilt brass carrying handle, Bramah lock with two keys, black leather lining, marked John Peck & Son, sold with a letter dated December 6th 1917 from Sir Edward Grimwood-Mears and the commissioners giving Sir William the red box as a momento of his chairmanship of the Dardanelles Commission. The box 46cm wide, 30cm deep and 15cm high - sold with several photographs of Sir William (later Lord Sterndale), his Victorian passport and other related ephemera. The Dardanelles Commission was an official investigation into the disastrous 1915 Dardanelles Campaign, also known as the Gallipoli Campaign. Their official report issued in 1919 found major faults with the planning and execution of the Campaign. Winston Churchill, as the main instigator of the Campaign, had been widely blamed for its failure and had been forced to resign as First Sea Lord in May 1915

A PRE-WAR WEBLEY JUNIOR AIR PISTOL IN .177 CALIBRE, 16.5cm sighted barrel, stamped with the manufacturer's details to right the model details on the left and with the serial no. XXXX78, the first four figures being deliberately obscured, and the letter S, ribbed blued metal grips, contained in a good copy of an original box. Retains most of its original finish with some rust spotting.
A FIRST WAR PERIOD TURKISH INFANTRY OFFICER'S SWORD, 70.5cm curved blade by JULIUS VOOS, etched with scrolling foliage, stands of arms and the Star and Crescent to either side, further etched to the back edge with the maker's details, regulation brass hilt with D-shaped knuckle guard, wire bound horn grip, contained in its brass mounted leather scabbard.
A FIRST PATTERN F-S WILKINSON COMMANDO KNIFE OR DAGGER OF No.9 COMMANDO AND ST NAZAIRE INTEREST, 16cm flattened diamond section blade etched to the ricasso with the F-S and Wilkinson motifs, regulation hilt with recurved guard, the pommel stamped 30946 to one side and 412 to the other, chequered grip, contained in its leather scabbard. 30946 is the Field Force Unit Number for No. 9 Commando. Of particular note, amongst other landings, No.9 Commando formed part of the demolition teams that were involved in the St Nazaire raid. Belt frog repaired.
TWO VARIOUS INDIAN TULWAR, the first 19th Century and with 75cm sharply curved blade, characteristic hilt with disc pommel, sun form boss with spiked tang button, together with another similar, possibly 18th Century and with patinated watered steel blade, pommel lacking and contained in its worn scabbard. A SCARCE .750 CALIBRE FLINTLOCK INDIA PATTERN ARTILLERY OR CAVALRY CARBINE, 26inch sighted barrel, border engraved bevelled lock stamped with a crown over GR and TOWER across the tail, full stock stamped with First Class Reserve mark (I.C.R.) over 103 and with stockers marks to the sideplate area, regulation brass mounts, steel ramrod, complete with bayonet by Wooley. Crisp sleepy condition, the butt rail pierced through. See page 169 illustration 46 of British Military Firearms 1650-1850 by Howard L. Blackmore.
