This is an exciting opportunity to own an artefact from a powerful and prominent English noble family. A large medieval copper alloy shield shaped retainers badge which powerful noblemen gave to their followers to identify them as part of their retinue and entitled them to their protection. The badge is depicting the family crest of the "HOWARD" family. 44.66g. 73x60mm. The large shield depicts a thick band cutting across the shield from top left down to lower central right. Three crosses can be seen in the upper right quadrant and again three more in the lower left quadrant. Although no longer visible the shield would've been coloured with a Gules (red) which represents courage, strength, and magnanimity. The Cross: Embodies faith, piety, and spirituality and would, along with band have been in white/silvered. ..................................................................................................................................... "The Howard family are a famous English noble family founded by John Howard, who was created Duke of Norfolk (third creation) by King Richard III of England in 1483. However, John was also the eldest grandson (although maternal) of the 1st Duke of the first creation. The Howards have been part of the peerage since the 15th century and remain both the Premier Dukes and Earls of the Realm in the Peerage of England, acting as Earl Marshal of England. After the English Reformation, many Howards remained steadfast in their Catholic faith as the most high-profile recusant family; two members, Philip Howard, 13th Earl of Arundel, and William Howard, 1st Viscount Stafford, are regarded as martyrs: a saint and a blessed respectively."
