"Chairman Mao" "Little Red Book" compiled and edited by Tian Xiao Guang" first edition first issue Chinese half-title printed in red title in red & green portrait of Mao printed in brown without Lin Biao `s calligraphic endorsement and preface but with called-for text on p.82/3 scattered red ink stamps in Chinese ink Chinese characters on half-title original white wrappers printed in black & red further ink stamps and numbers sticker on spine some light soiling 16mo Peking General Political Department of the People`s Liberation Army n.d. [May 1964]. ***The first edition " but with the Lin Biao endorsements excised.
"Little Red Book" Braille edition printed in Braille" edited by the PLA Central Political Department as transcribed by the Shanghai Municipal Blind Persons` Middle School Printing Company brown cartridge paper sewed contents worked loose from stitching original flexible red vinyl plastic covers with the Chinese title and red star lightly indented on the front heavily soiled and torn some chipping rear cover repaired with brown tape small folio [Shanghai or Beijing] Blind Person`s Monthly Press July 1967; possibly incomplete and sold not subject to return. ***Amongst the rarest "translations" made of Mao`s Little Red Book. The first official date when education was provided to the blind in China is 1874 when the opening of the first school for the blind was started by foreign missionaries though the Guild of Blind Musicians (mainly for the Court) is known to have existed as early as the Han dynasty two thousand years ago. Presumably the embossed Braille alphabet has translated the original Chinese characters into Pinyin for Chinese readers " but it is difficult to verify its full collation since none of the bibliographies of Chairman Mao`s writings pay special attention to this version aside from noting its existence. It appears to collate in gatherings of three leaves + three stubbs; the earliest Braille version of Quotations identified is from May 1966 but only this second edition published one year later was issued in a gigantic red vinyl binding.
Great Mentor" Great Leader Great General poster with half-length portrait of Mao in green uniform against a rising red sun with the suggestion of a sea of red flags below 735 x 1055mm. old folds a repaired tear within the image a few marginal pin holes and small losses Shanghai first edition second printing 1967; Unlimited Loyalty to the Great Leader Chairman Mao portrait bust of Mao in a radiant sun above a crowd holding up banners red flags and large sunflowers 770 x 530mm. folds a smal loss to lower right corner otherwise in good condition Zhejiang 1968; Mao Zedong`s Thoughts are the Peak of Modern Marxism and Leninism bust-length portrait of Mao in green uniform the `spirits` of Stalin Lenin Marx and Engels in a line behind all above a solid mass of red flags converging on Tienanmen Gate below 535 x 775mm. folds a few small losses towards sheet edges Zhejiang 1968(3) ***The latter poster refers to one of the two occasions Deng Xiao Ping was the subject of a purge during the Cultural Revolution in his fluctuating fortunes as a prominent statesman and theorist which eventually saw him rise once more at the head of the `Second Generation` of Chinese politicians " after the death of Chairman Mao.
Large vase depicting Chairman Mao the radiating portrait emphasising Mao as the sun" the triple sunflower motif around the shoulder represent the three loyalties to Mao his thoughts and the proletarian revolutionary line the red bandana berries on the neck are an immediate and everlasting visual code of allegiance to Mao`s thought the reverse of the vase inscribed with Mao`s poem `The Double Ninth` and further inscribed "Wish Mao a Long Life" porcelain 655mm. high marked and dated Jiangxi Company of Ceramic Industry 1968. ***The particularly remarkable aspect of this vase is that Mao`s image is painted in under-glaze blue a high-risk process often resulting in kiln-failure. In choosing to decorate the vase in this way the maker took an even greater risk of being declared a counter-revolutionary had Mao`s image been marred in any way. The poem on the reverse translates as: Man ages all too easily not nature; Year by year the Double Ninth returns. On this Double Ninth The yellow blooms of the battlefield smell sweeter Each year the autumn wind blows strongly It is not spring`s splendour Yet surpasses spring`s splendour The frosty sky and river stretches before the eyes ten thousand miles. This ci poem was written by Mao in October 1929 to commemorate the victory of one of his early guerilla wars at that time. The Double Ninth (Chongyang) refers t othe Chinese autumn festival on the ninth day of the ninth month according to the Chinese calendar. The poem was first published in the prime literary journal Renmin Wenxue " in 1962.

Covered Cup depicting Three Errant Knights painted by Hu Fengjian" with an inscription reading "The girl in the red dress stands aside rolling up the curtain How is her intelligence in comparison with a hero? Hu Fengjian the son-in-law presented this respectfully to the father-in-law as a souvenir of the New Year Day of 1954" with a further inscription on the lid porcelain 130mm. high 1954. ***The artist is cleverly expressing his gratitude to his father-in-law for raising a daughter as virtuous as Hongfo Nu in helping her husband. The cup depicts the meeting of Li Jing and Quiran Ke arranged by Li`s lover Hongfu Nu three legendary characters who helped the first emperor of the Tang dynasty to overthrow the Sui dynasty. The relevance to New China is validated by the inscription on the lid " with the peach-form knop serving as a symbol of longevity.
