A 3 1/4" gauge model steam locomotive in green and black GNR livery, the cab numbered 1142, with tender, model no. 1193, locomotive l. 70 cm x w. 19 cm x h. 27 cm, tender l. 45 x w. 19 cm x 21 cm * This model is of the Great Northern Railway Ivatt 'Large' Atlantic Locomotive. This design first saw service in 1902. It is built to a scale 3/4" to one foot and was completed in 1975 by M. A Victorian specimen wood centre table, the circular top intricately inlaid in a scale design with a variety of specimen woods. The table top diameter 45 ins. PROVENANCE-this table was exhibited at The North London Working Classes Industrial Exhibition 1864. Accompanying the table is one volume “Illustrated Memorial of the North London Working Classes Industrial Exhibition 1864”. This table is Exhibit No. 800. The table was awarded a First Class Prize Certificate to The Manufacturer J. Selley, Carpenter, 7 Heath Villas, Hampstead Heath and signed by Russell, Gladstone & Shaftesbury. The certificate is dated 1864 and the accompanying medal 1866. the medal date on the certificate is also dated 1866 and was probably presented just over a year after the exhibition. Provenance by descent through the family (see illustration).
Robert Paul (English, Sutton 1906-1980 Zimbabwe) Zimbabwean landscape, probably the Nyanga Mountains oil on canvas, signed and dated `79` lower right 17½ x 23½in. (44.5 x 59.75cm.) * Robert Paul is widely acknowledged as one of Zimbabwe`s foremost painters. Born in England, he started painting aged 8 and won the Daily Express Young Artists award in the 1920s. In 1927 he joined the British South Africa Police and became their official cartographer. Retiring in 1951, he exhibited in Rhodesia from 1952 and in 1963 exhibited internationally for the first time at the Commonwealth Institute in London. A self taught artist, he was a long term friend and correspondent with John Piper and Ivon Hitchens, who encouraged him explore the work of artists such as Georges Braque and use new techniques such as `gum resist`, leading him to develop a distinctive abstract style.
Yuri Krotov (Russian, b.1964) `Building Sandcastles` oil on canvas, signed lower left, inscribed to gallery label verso 14½ x 21in. (37 x 53.5cm.) * Provenance: Petleys, 9 Cork Street, London. Yuri Krotov was born near the Ozov Sea in south west Russia and studied art in Moscow from 1976-1983. He later taught at the city`s Russian Academy of Painting. Strongly influenced by French and English Impressionism, his work was first sold internationally at a Russian paintings sale at Drouot in Paris, since when his work has become widely exhibited and collected.

First World War Royal Flying Corps interest - The 2nd Lieutenant Leslie Reed Blacking archive Leslie Reed Blacking served initially with the London Rifle Brigade and in the summer of 1918, at the age of 19, was sent to serve in the Royal Flying Corps with 207 squadron, where his task was to fly Handley Page 0/400 night bombers on raids behind the German lines. Later he became a heavy bomber pilot with the R.A.F. on the first Allied strategic bombing operations. After the war he went out to Hong Kong in banking; he also came to know Penang, Ipoh and Singapore well. His career was with the Bank of India, in China, Malaya and the United States, where he was manager of the New York branch during the 2nd World War. He maintained his contacts with banking and aviation, attending an annual dinner in the RAF Club and his bank’s annual gathering for former employees. He died at the age of 82. This archive comprises a fascinating collection of personal possessions, medals, ephemera and photographs, including the following: 1. A bar of four medals – Two of the 1st War, George V Efficiency Service Medal (Karachi Corps) and Elizabeth 2nd Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Medal, together with the corresponding miniature dress medals. 2. Silver mounted swagger stick 3. Silver mounted Tortoiseshell brooch inlaid with the insignia of the London Rifle Brigade 4. A box of insignia and uniform badges pertaining to the London Rifle Brigade, the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Air Force and his “Dog Tags”. 5. An Album containing photographs of his early career in the R.F.C. including some of himself, uniformed colleagues and others of aircraft, some of which are shown after crash landing. 6. Several envelopes containing family papers, including Marriage Certificates, Death Certificates, Wills and letters to and from family members and business acquaintances. 7. A copy of a biographical novel written from his thoughts and memories by his friend and author, Humphrey Wynn, entitled, “Darkness Shall Cover Me”. Subtitled, Night Bombing over the Western Front. Together with the original typescript of the book, when provisionally entitled, “Peradventure the Darkness”, which contains a handwritten letter from the author to Monica, Leslie Blacking’s daughter. 8. A print entitled “Last Post”, presented to him during his visit to Ypres, 22nd April 1972, signed by the donor, F. Vandevoorde, O.B.E.
