The trial that followed lasted until 1795 when he was eventually acquitted.

Both towns were known centres of Marian exiles fleeing persecution in England, and the 1550s publication dates overlapping with Mary's reign, conceivably hint at an English owner. Certainly, the first mentioned is the celebrated tale of one Calvinist's spiritual torment following public recantation before the Inquisition in Venice in 1548. His despair ultimately led to his demise and the highly charged account is written in the style of ars moriendi by several notable protestants of the day. Inscriptions of a devotion and analytical nature, such as 'Curia romana non curat...'.

We can trace only a handful of copies at auction, the last in 2004. An indifferent playwright, Dennis is best remembered as a discerning critic. He is portrayed as "Sir Tremendous" in Pope's Three Hours after Marriage (1717), "tremendous" being one of his favourite terms of praise.
Weather.- Hygrometry.- Luc (Jean André de) A Letter Addressed to Mr U.F. Hausmann,... Giving An Account of the Origin of Hygrometry; of the Invention of the Hygrometer, and of its Practical Use, first edition, some very light spotting, original printed wrappers, uncut, minor loss and rubbing to edges, corners slightly darkened, folio, Windsor, C. Knight and Son, 1813. *** A rare work on the early history of hygrometry, the science of measuring the moisture content in the atmosphere. Swiss geologist and pioneering inventor of barometers and hygrometers Jean André de Luc (1727-1817) here writes to Ulrich Friedrich Hausmann (1776-1847), giving an account of his newly devised whalebone hygrometer, his experiments in the Alps in the 1770s, and the principles of "hygrology".

Smart (Christopher) A Song to David, half-title, book-label of Anne Vernon with her contemporary ownership name to head of title, half-title and title very lightly browned, a few spots, uncut in original boards, printed paper label to upper cover, a few small stains to upper cover, wear to joints and extremities, backstrip peeling away from upper joint and very slightly chipped at foot, 8vo, for Rodwell and Martin, 1819. *** First printed privately in 1763, and later included in Smart's Translation of the Psalms of David in 1765. The work subsequently fell into obscurity until the publication of the present edition in 1819. According to the editor, it was "composed by Smart during his confinement in a madhouse, (when denied the use of pen, ink, and paper,) by indenting the lines with a key upon the wainscot of his apartment". We can trace only one copy of this edition at auction.

Law.- Noy (William) The Compleat Lawyer or a Treatise Concerning Tenures and Estates in Lands of Inheritance for Life... of Chattels Reall and Personal, first edition, with initial and final blanks, woodcut initial and head-piece, some light marginal browning, very minor worming to final leaves of lower margin, contemporary sheep, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, light scuffing to covers, 8vo, by W.W. for W.Lee, 1651.*** One of five imprints with this date, one of Noy's principal contributions to English jurisprudence.

One of the engraved plates in this important work depicts his "Palpable Arithmetic", a computer for the use of the blind.Provenance: library of the late David Singmaster.David Singmaster (1938-2023) was emeritus professor of mathematics at London South Bank university and provided the first comprehensive mathematical analysis of the Rubik’s Cube as well as one of the first published solutions. He had a vast personal collection of mechanical puzzles and books on maths and brain teasers, to which this lot belongs.
