A silver presentation cup and cover, 19th century, probably Russian, the baluster cup decorated in high relief with a frieze of playful putti with two oval cartouches, on foliate embossed baluster stem, resting on acanthus leafed stepped circular base, with entwined rose and ribbon border, the foliate encrusted slightly domed cover surmounted by a figure of Mercury, with presentation inscription*, gilt interior, 39cm high *Presented on recovery from his recent accident, as a token of esteem and sympathy, to T C Watson, Esq C.E. By the employers of Messrs Ashbury & Watson, Contractors for the Riga Dünaburg Railway. This cup was presented to Thomas Colclough Watson in 1861 after the loss of his right leg in a railway accident. At the time he was Chief Resident Engineer for the railway being built between Dünaburg (now Daugavpils) and Riga in Latvia. The cup bears the Watson coat of arms in one cartouche and the second cartouche represents the Institution of Civil Engineers with the head of Thomas Telford, its first president. CONDITION REPORT: Amateur restoration to break in stem. Split on rim of cover. Damage to Mercury's caduceus.
