Imported to the UK from New York in 1990, this Michigan-built Dort is running and driving nicely and is believed to be one of just two over here. The Dort Motor Company was set up and run by Billy Durant and Dallas Dort and evolved from the success of their Flint Road-Cart Company, the largest manufacturer of horse-drawn vehicles in the USA. In 1914, Durant set out to pursue his interests in building motorcars and the Dort Motor Company was started, utilising the same factory as the Flint Road-Cart Company. The first two models were released in 1915 and 1916, both Tourers equipped with a 4-cylinder, 17hp Lycoming engine, and they quickly built a reputation for reliability. Demand became so strong, around 9,000 cars found homes in its first year, that the company opened an extra factory 60 miles to the south of Flint, adjacent to Detroit at Windsor, in the Canadian province of Ontario. Presumably quality and reliability played a part in the Dort's success as they were never cheap, whereas Ford Model Ts were selling for $440 in 1915, the Dort Sedan was listed at $1,065, the Convertible Sedan at $815, the five-seat Open Tourer at $695, and the Roadster at $695. This Tourer Model 5 was imported to the UK in 1990 and upon arrival was fully restored to its former glory and enjoyed by the owner's family for fun days out and the occasional wedding where it was well received. Fitted with the ever-reliable four-cylinder, 2.7-litre, L-Head Lycoming mated to a 3-speed crash gearbox, the car is in excellent condition, starting readily on the starting handle and running smoothly. Clearly it has been rebuilt in recent years with some fresh paint and presents really well. The 3-door tourer body features comfortable bench type seats to the front and rear with a large hood that easily unfurls for cover during poor weather. Bigger and more powerful than UK offerings from the likes of Austin and Wolseley, this Dort is comfortable, practical, rare and an excellent entry into the world of Edwardian motoring.SpecificationMake: DORTModel: MODEL 5Year: 1916Chassis Number: 1995Registration Number: SV 6830Transmission: ManualEngine Number: L2286Drive Side: Left-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 6950 MilesMake: LHDInterior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images
A little jewel of a Morgan three-wheeler, restoration fresh, subtly upgraded and beautifully finished. An ingenious concept, HFS Morgan built his first three-wheeler in 1909. Based around a tubular-steel chassis frame, the design's low centre of gravity and advanced sliding pillar independent front suspension endowed it with superb roadholding. Progressively developed, the single rear-wheel-driven platform played host to a variety of JAP, Matchless, Blackburne, Anzani and Ford powerplants over the years (though, the prototype used a Peugeot unit). Fearsome competition cars, Morgan three-wheelers driven by the likes of HFS himself, Clive Lones and Harold Beart acquitted themselves well on race circuits and trial stages alike endearing themselves to the general public.By 1933, Morgan’s three-wheeler chassis could be ordered with four types of body, namely: Super Sports, Sports Two-Seater, Sports Family and Family. The Super Sports was notable for its chromium-plated exhaust pipes that run the length of the body. Interest in Morgans of this period has never waned and, if anything, increased in recent times - the company’s inspired decision to create a modern three-wheeler having brought the early cars to the attention of a new audience. This charming Matchless V-Twin-powered Super Sports was discovered in 2008 in barn find condition, dismantled and awaiting it’s next journey. Having had a total restoration in recent years completed to exacting standards by a retired pattern maker, it is now finished in burgundy with a light tan interior and is ready for the road once again. With its three-speed transmission and 990cc engine this is no slouch and is sure to provide the feel good factor that only a Morgan can provide. With its twin carburettors, stainless steel twin exhausts, alternator and uprated dashboard amongst other subtle modifications, this is one three-wheeler that has been restored with modern motoring in mind. Your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged to fully appreciate this rare and highly collectable Morgan which pleasingly still retains its original registration number BUV 252 and is believed to be matching numbers. Having covered less than 500 miles since completion, a period of running-in is advised to achieve the very best from this instantly recognisable British classic. One of only 25 LG45s bodied as a Tourer and consequently much coveted and very rarely on the market.Having established its reputation by winning the Moscow - St Petersburg Reliability Trial of 1910 with a 30hp six, Lagonda concentrated mainly on the production of light cars before reverting to sporting and luxury models in the mid-1920s with the introduction of the 14/60. This four-cylinder, 2-litre model was joined in 1929 by the first of Lagonda's own sixes - the 3-Litre - but by the mid-1930s the Meadows-engined cars were seen as the way forward. Introduced at the 1933 Olympia Show and based on the preceding ZM 3-litre model, the M45 deployed Meadows' 4½-litre, twin-plug six to good effect, saloons being capable of reaching 90mph and tourers the 'ton' under favourable conditions.A team of three specially prepared short-chassis cars (effectively the soon-to-be-announced M45 Rapide) prepared by Lagonda main agents Fox & Nicholls performed creditably at the 1934 RAC Tourist Trophy at Ards, and the following year one of these TT cars driven by John Hindmarsh and Luis Fontes won the Le Mans 24-Hour endurance classic outright.Under W O Bentley's technical direction the big Lagonda became more refined: the M45's successor - the LG45 - gaining synchromesh gears, flexible engine mounts and centralised chassis lubrication among many other improvements. Endowed with such an impeccable pedigree, the 4½-litre Lagonda quickly established itself as a favourite among the wealthy sporting motorists of its day. A mere 278 LG45s were produced between 1936 and 1937 and the model remains a much sought-after classic, however, of those 278 only 25 are believed to have been delivered as Tourers such as this offering and consequently these rare derivatives have always been coveted and rarely come to market, making this a wonderful opportunity. We understand that the first owner of this stunning LG45 was, Lord Burghley, the Olympic Athlete who became the 6th Marquess of Exeter in 1956. He inspired the scene in the film “Chariots of Fire “ when Harold Abrahams ran round the Great Court at Trinity College in the time it takes for the college clock to toll midnight! Burghley actually accomplished this feat in his final year at Cambridge and was the first to do it taking 43.6 seconds to cover the 406 yards. Our vendor purchased the Lagonda a couple of years ago from Hyman Ltd., the well-respected US dealer in all things classic, and at that time it was finished in Old English White with dark red wire wheels, a tan leather interior and displaying an odometer reading of 98,161 miles. Surprisingly, in the photographs accompanying Hyman’s sales literature, the car is seen wearing its UK registration number, CLW 296, so presumably it had been part of a private collection and not used on US roads.Despite the fact that the car’s bodywork and trim appeared in good condition all round, our vendor decided that he wanted to totally repaint and retrim the Tourer and the result is truly spectacular. It’s now resplendent in Gloss Black with a depth of shine that is quite remarkable, the wire wheels are also in black (shod with new Dunlops all round) and the weather equipment is all new. The interior has been superbly retrimmed in a glorious Apple Green and displays a level of craftsmanship rarely seen with not a detail missed. The engine bay can only be described as immaculate and every other mechanical area that’s visible has been thoughtfully presented, not over-restored but just the way you would hope to find it. We could write further chapters about this impressive motor car but suggest that the best way to assess this beautiful and charismatic Lagonda is simply to come along and view it. With only 25 ever built and far fewer remaining, it may be your only chance to see one. With a Le Mans pedigree, dependable Meadows 4½-litre engine and smoothly operating transmission, the LG45 offers a great package of heritage, modern convenience and reliability and in this case, with its interesting provenance and amazing presentation, 12013 deserves your serious consideration. A fabulously rare, meticulously maintained example of a K-321 Cabriolet, with only five understood to be left. Fascinating history file containing lots of original marketing booklets and magazine features.Founded in 1909 by Bobby Hupp and Charles Hastings, the Hupp Motor Car Company was born and based in Detroit, Michigan. Further support came from investors J. Walter Drake, Joseph Drake, John Baker, and Edwin Denby with Drake being elected president and Hupp vice president and general manager. Emil Nelson, formerly of Oldsmobile and Packard, joined the company as Chief Engineer and Hastings was named assistant general manager. In late 1909, Bobby's brother, Louis Gorham Hupp left his job with the Michigan Central Railroad in Grand Rapids and joined the company. This combination of expertise lead to a fantastic team set to produce some fabulous motorcars in their time. The Hupmobile K-321 Cabriolet Roadster was released in 1932, with the USA still reeling from the 1930 Great Depression, and was a good car that struggled to sell in the economic climate, despite its successes on track with the Coupe variant. Beautifully designed with the lovely flowing lines synonymous with 1930s American cars, this K-321 Cabriolet Roadster presents fabulously in its Primrose Yellow and Chocolate Brown two-tone colour combination. Built on a 121-inch wheelbase, the K-321 was powered by a 3.7-litre, straight-six, L-head engine producing circa 90bhp. In 1933, the K-321 was Hupmobile’s most popular model, with around 4,600 produced. The car featured a sloping front grille, and the bonnet was lengthened to cover the cowl. Bonnet vent doors, first seen on the larger straight-eight model in 1932, were also incorporated for the straight-six. It was the first complete car design by famous industrial designer Raymond Loewy that was put into production without changes which, we imagine, must have pleased him. Less than 10 of these K-321 Cabriolet Roadsters are known to still exist so this is a very rare survivor. It was sold to Australia when new and arrived on these shores in 2004 when it was imported by Waterside Classics of Glasgow. It's fitted with some fabulous period options including two side-mounted spare wheels with metal covers, twin trumpet horns, a heater, sun visors and an interior mirror with inbuilt clock. The original 3.7-litre engine unfortunately cracked its block and, in March 2020, it was replaced with a 1941 Hupmobile 4.1-litre Skylark engine at a cost of c.£8,500 with the installation carried out by independent marque expert, Dave Palmer. Importantly, the original engine comes with the car, is already crated up and ready to go. Starting and running brilliantly with the newer engine, this K-321 is a powerful car, comfortably cruising at normal speeds by modern standards. The car appears well restored with a lovely interior, re-upholstered in 2014, in high-quality cognac-coloured hide extending to the dickey seat. A new mohair hood was fitted at the same time and folds down easily having been well designed to fold almost flat and we understand that around £9,600 was invested in the interior and soft top. The paintwork presents very nicely in its period Primrose over Chocolate Brown colour scheme. Unusually, for a car of this age, the ownership history is known from new. This is a very attractive and eminently useable classic that is completely at home in modern traffic with a decent turn of speed. It's accompanied by a fascinating history file documenting significant expenditure since 2007 and we welcome and encourage any inspection of this remarkable example of Thirties Americana.SpecificationMake: HUPMOBILEModel: K-321 ROADSTERYear: 1933Chassis Number: 7137Registration Number: 524 UXOTransmission: Manual Engine Number: R100653Drive Side: Left-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 62352 MilesMake: LHDInterior Colour: Brown LeatherClick here for more details and images
Recognised as the earliest surviving saloon made on the post-war Jaguar production line and carries the Chassis Number 510010 denoting that it was the 10th produced. The Mk IV was Jaguar’s first car following World War II and was produced between late 1945 and 1948. Built on a 120” separate chassis featuring beam front and live rear axle suspension on semi-elliptic springs and Girling mechanical brakes, it was offered with three engine variants; four-cylinder 1½-litre, or six-cylinder 2½/3½-litres coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox. The stylish, all-steel coachwork was available in four-door saloon or drophead coupé configurations with the kind of luxurious interior typically associated with Jaguar. In addition, it sported distinguishing chrome headlamps and a prominent chrome radiator grill. Very few of these magnificent Jaguars were built for the home market as steel was being rationed for goods for export. This charming Jaguar Mk IV is recognised as the earliest surviving saloon made on the post-war Jaguar production line and carries the chassis number 510010 denoting that it was the 10th produced. Sir William Lyons famously stored SS engine blocks in the garage at Wappenbury Hall knowing that post-war production would be slow and the first seventeen cars carried the 'SS' casting on the engine blocks before the Jaguar logo was introduced into production. This is a matching-numbers car and widely regarding as the benchmark for all Mk IVs due to its distinctively original features unique to the first cars to roll off the line before full production and tooling got into full swing. The 2.5-litre engine was fully rebuilt in 2018 by the renowned marque specialists Davenport Cars who have also ensured this significant saloon has remained on the button and a pleasure to drive. Few cars have the usability of this Mk IV and running on Blockley tyres would look the part at any event or in any collection. It comes with a complete tool tray and has benefitted from substantial investment over the last five years to keep it at this level.Post-war motoring at its best and a significant part of Jaguar history.SpecificationMake: JAGUARModel: MK IV 2.5LTR SALOONYear: 1946Chassis Number: 510010Registration Number: HLL 731Engine Number: L1913EDrive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: BrownClick here for more details and images
