A gilt copper figure of Buddha SakyamuniTibet, 15th - 16th century Noticeable sculpture depicting the Gautama Buddha, in his canonical manifestation. The figure, with a hieratic expression and finely made, is sitting in the padmasana position on a double lotus flower base, enriched by gems. The right hand performs the bh?mispar?a mudra, asking the earth to witness the truth of his word, while the left hand is resting in his lap in the avakasamudra, the gesture of relaxation. The figure wears a monastic robe, finely chiseled with phytomorphic decors on the edges. The base, still sealed, shows a double vajra, and at the back of the figure is a long inscription.The inscription concerns the propagation of the Buddhist doctrine in relation to the first disciples of the following of Buddha Sakyamuni, here directly addressed.Transliteration of the inscription with orthographic corrections in parenthesis:°°|| Shag (for: Sha?) kya thub pa khyed (for: khyed rang) kyi 'khor gi (for: gyi) thog mapu (for: bu)| chos dar skra bang ga||Literal translation of the readable portions of the inscription:(Oh) Sa?kyamuni, the first (thog ma) sons (pu per: bu) of your (khyed kyi) following ('khor gyi),propagation (of the) doctrine (chos dar) hair (skra?) bang ga (bang ga).The inscription is made up of sixteen syllables, some of which of uncertain meaning. A bronze figure of the first KarmapaTibet, 16th century Noteworthy bronze sculpture depicting Dusum Kyenpa (1110-1193), first Karmapa and origin of the Karma Kagyu lineage in the Kagyupa school, founded during the XI century by the masters Marpa Milarepa and Gampopa. The figure is sitting in the padmasana position, on a double lotus flower base with big petals. The right hand performs the bhumisparsamudra, while the left one performs the avakasamudra. The figure wears an headdress characteristic of his lineage, and a rich monastic robe supplemented by a cape with peculiar ribbing on the back. On the robes are silver and copper appliqué reinforcing the edges, chiseled with phytomorphic motifs. Sleeping eyes working, quite a bit of rubbing around base of head, paler colour showing through. Losses to eyelids. Limbs loose. Some knocks and bumps to composition body. First finger on right hand missing. Left hand appears to have been restored, possibly has a later thumb. Losses around top of leg also to toe on each foot.

The end of the carrier is stamped BPR1943.

Small sliver missing from top rim and crack running down through first pierced decoration through to pierced decoration. Main pierced decoration to vase. Part of bead missing from outside. Two slight imperfections/firing faults to next gold band down. A couple of sections missing in pierced decoration where foot splays. Chips to pierced decoration on pink foot, one of those chips also has cracks visible from reverse. Base with green mark. Some slight rubbing also to gilt decoration.

An Albert Medal in Gold for Saving Life at Sea, awarded to Samuel Lake, the reverse engraved 'Wreck of the Diamond 20th June 1866 Presented in the name of Her Majesty to Samuel Lake', in a (Phillips) case of issue, and a photograph of Samuel Lake.Samuel Lake was one of the very first recipients of the Albert Medal, 1st Class having first been instituted by a Royal Warrant on 7th March 1866. Samuel Lake, from Dartmouth in Devon received the Albert Medal for his bravery in helping the crew and 400 Muslim pilgrims, who were returning from Mecca aboard the vessel Diamond when she sank off Bombay. Lake returned a hero to Dartmouth, and in 1880 he also received the RNLI's Vellum Award, one of the organisations highest accolades, again given for saving life, this time off Milford Haven. Lake was also posthumously awarded the Swedish Gold Bravery Medal in 1887 for saving the crew of the Swedish ship Ida, when it was wrecked off Corsica. Samuel Lake was an engineer and inventor who pioneered steam trawlers and he built Coombe Terrace Cottages in Dartmouth for the crews of the trawlers which were the first houses in the country to be made from poured concrete.Provenance: Descent through the family See front cover colour and other illustrations Condition report chip to enamel, some wear

Firing cracks visible, around left hand section of drape missing, back left as you look at it from the front. Firing crack lower down on opposite side. Other chips to back of drapes. Also appears to have firing crack running at the base of the internal drape covering her body. Appears to have repair rear to base, although not obvious that it has been off completely and repaired. Chips to toes on her right foot. Rubbing and discolouration. Inside rim of base broken, with losses. Another firing crack visible between two hands.Other group with first finger missing from her right hand. It appears her left arm has been broken and glued. Book also appears to have been broken off and re-glued. Damage to stretchers on her chair.Both figures grubby and with some staining.

During the First World War she was commissioned by the Imperial War Musuem to paint horses, and was Director of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, raising money to treat injured horses. Maude Marshall exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and the Royal Society of Arts, and she lived at Little Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland.

Cheminant is recorded at this address in the 1872 London Directory, which corresponds with the fact that Grant was not knighted until 1866, and he is referred to as "Sir Francis Grant" in the inscription. At this date, Grant lived in London, and of course would have had the miniature framed locally.

It is also recorded that he opened a studio in Winnipeg, Canada in 1910 and was appointed the first Curator of The Winnipeg Art Gallery in 1912.
Articles 3 and 4 in the charter's text state: “Founding members are those who formed the company in 1899. They will pay an annuity of L. 25 for the first year, then L. 15. The consecutio temporum allows us therefore to establish that the volume was printed in 1900. This is also confirmed by the business history of Giovanni Pizzi, the Milanese typographer who printed the charter.
