At his death in 1872,what had become something of a family concern, was taken on by his son, alsonamed John (1840 - 1916). Due to the continuing high standards of the specimensthe company produced, it flourished. At the death of the second John his ownsons continued to run the business, but the effects of World War I led to adecline in business opportunities and the firm began to flounder, eventuallybeing taken over by William Griggs. All these fish (lots 1- 68) come from the celebrated collection which for many years decorated the famous Flowerpot Inn near Henley. Despite this, the young artist received 'special mention'.Van Biesbroeck was recognised for both his painting and sculpture, receiving awards and recognition throughout his career, as well as regular commissions. He was chosen to represent Belgium at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Fleeing Belgium on the onset of the First World War, the artist settled in Bordighera in Northern Italy.Van Biesbroeck's first exposure to Orientalism came with a visit to North Africa in 1926, followed by a visit to Algeria in 1927, which radically altered the artist's style. The artist lived and worked in Algiers from 1929-1938, establishing a studio, 'La Volière', which became famous throughout the city.In 1938 Van Biesbroeck returned to Ghent where he remained until his death in 1965.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

After facing several difficult times during his childhood, including having to flee his country, Music went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb from 1930. After graduating, he travelled across Europe and it was in Italy where he had his first solo exhibition outside Yugoslavia. During World War Two, Music was arrested by the Nazi regime and was transferred to the Dachau concentration camp in 1944. During his time at Dachau, Music drew excessively and when he was released in 1945, he had over 100 drawings depicting his time at the camp. These were later exhibited in the 1970s. Music is a talented figure of the Ecole de Paris school, and his works are held in the collections of major museums such as the MoMA, New York, Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Bologna and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. This present picture depicts two horses with a rider and was one of Music's favourite subject matters. They move slowly in a grey landscape, with mountains in the background. This scene, executed in 1948, captures two important themes for Music: the beauty of the landscape and the essential isolation of the individual. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Briton Riviere, RA (British, 1840-1920)The Twa Corbiesigned with monogram and dated twice '1863' (lower left) oil on canvas 39.4 x 54.6cm (15 1/2 x 21 1/2in).framed as archFootnotes:ProvenanceWith Cider House Galleries Ltd., Surrey, no. F7593.Anon. sale, Sotheby's Belgravia, 18 April 1978, lot 96a.Private collection, UK.Briton Riviere's work, like many who followed them, shows the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites and in particular John Everett Millais. This influence can be seen in Riviere's paintings of edifying subjects grounded in literature and poetry - often concerned with love and death – set to the backdrop of the meticulously observed natural world. The present work is a prime example of this Pre-Raphaelite influence, as he has taken the subject from the Scots ballad 'The Twa Corbies'. This song probably dates from the 18th century and was first published in Sir Walter Scott's Minstrelsy in 1812. 'The Twa Corbies' is derived from the English folk ballad 'The Three Ravens', however it uses a darker, more cynical tone and tells the story with a morbid twist. This song tells the story of a mortally wounded knight whose hawk and hound have deserted him to chase game, and whose mistress has left him for another lover. The ravens are therefore given an undisturbed meal, as nobody else knows where the man lies, or even that he is dead. They talk in gruesome detail about the meal they will make of him, plucking out his eyes and using his hair for their nests. Riviere depicts the moment before the ravens reach him, one just taking flight. The knight lies amongst nature with his sword discarded by his side and his eyes remaining slightly open. Riviere cleverly depicts this work on the brink of sunset which could mimic the end of the knight's life and subsequently his dark fate to follow. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
