An original post WW1 letter, handwritten by T.E.Lawrence (1888-1935).Lawrence was written to by a young Boy Scout asking for his autograph, and he replied with this letter, dated 21.XI.19.The transcript of the letter reads as:’Yes, old son, here is my signature, but I don’t believe I’ll ever be a famous man. It’s just an American cinematograph artist who found out that I was a novelty in a Fellahin War, and is making a lot of money out of it.T.E.LawrenceP.S. I wish I was making something too!’The cinematographer he is alluding to is Lowell Thomas, who’s 1919 movie entitled ‘With Allenby in Palestine and Lawrence in Arabia’ became famous at the time. It’s fascinating that Lawrence downplayed his fame at the time, not expecting that he’d ever be remembered for his exploits. On the contrary, he became one of the most enigmatic figures of the First World War.The letter is dated in Lawrence’s distinctive style that he was using at the time, using both traditional numerals and Roman numerals. The left hand edge is slightly angled, which may suggest it was taken from a journal originally.Sized approximately 17.5cm x 11.2cm.Condition: very good.Clear writing and signature. The page would appear to have been pasted into an album at some time as there is some residue to the reverse side.No tears, crease or fold lines.
An interesting collection of Victorian through to WW2 items of Militaria, all relating to two families. To include: 2 scarce 19th century army pay books with leather covers. One named to Richard Mordecai, who enlisted with the Royal Artillery on October 17th 1894, aged 16 years and 2 months. The other is named to a Thomas Mordecai, who enlisted with the Royal Artillery on March 6th 1863 aged 19 years and 2 months (this is father and son). You can faintly see Thomas’ name inked on to the leather cover.Included with the first paybook is also a WW1 period photograph of Richard Mordecai, he is dressed in civilian clothes, but appears to be at an army camp.Online records show that there was a Richard Mordecai who enlisted on July 17th 1918 aged 40 years 11 months, in the Army Pay Corps, so this may explain this photograph.Plus, a WW1 BWM and Victory medal named to 1277 GNR J R Soulsby Royal Artillery (this is confirmed as his full entitlement). It’s likely that GNR Soulsby also served during WW2 on the home front, as there is also a Defence Medal and 2 sterling ARP lapel badges. There is also a 2nd type (1949-1952) George VI Special Constabulary Long Service Medal, named to James C. Saddleton, 2 x 1902 base metal Edward VII coronation medals, a bronze 1935 jubilee medal for the Borough of Tynemouth, an Edward VIII base metal coronation medal, and a Robert Raikes Sunday school medal.14 items total.Condition: varies across items. The leather covered pay books are worn to the used pages, and the paper has become brittle in place and broken away. There is still enough information available in each to discern who they belonged to.The medals are all good, as are the badges.
A Royal Navy WW1 / Long Service Pair awarded to 102085 Chief Petty Officer Edwin Stanbury. To include: the BWM and an Edwardian era Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, plus the original card box for the BWM.4 items including paperwork.Notes: the accompanying service papers indicate that Edwin Stanbury was born in Stratton, Cornwall in 1861.He first enlisted as a ‘Boy 2nd Class’ on 15th September 1877, serving on HMS Impregnable. His LSGC medal was earned during his service with H.M. Coastguard, serving on such stations as Eastbourne, Exmouth and Teignmouth. He would appear to have reengaged during WW1 serving on the shore establishment, HMS Vivid I up until 12th February 1919. Due to the fact he was mobilised for up to 28 days, but didn’t serve overseas, the BWM would be his only WW1 era entitlement.Condition; very good. Some extremely minor contact wear.

An exceptional and rare WW2 and Post WW2 era medal group and photo archive to 908535 L/Cpl Gerald Hutchinson 1st S.A.S.Including a full size group of 7 medals, corresponding miniatures, WW2 era and Post WW2 era cloth badges, a WW2 era and later photograph album with many unpublished images, a 1st S.A.S. Regiment certificate signed by Paddy Mayne, a ‘Soldiers Service & Pay Book’, plus various post war association membership cards, pay books etc (where his unit is listed as 21st S.A.S. Artists Regt), a 1945 dated telegram informing Gerald of the birth of his son (addressed to HQ Sqd 1st S.A.S.), a scarce 21st S.A.S Regt (Artists) T.A. Christmas card, plus published books relating to the S.A.S.,3 scrap books with newspaper clippings relating to the S.A.S compiled by Gerald in his later life, and a book of poetry written by Gerald in the WW2 era and post war era.Notes: Gerald Hutchinson (1922-1989) started his military career with service in the Royal Artillery 72nd Field Regiment, then later with the Royal Artillery Territorials. His tracer card also clearly mentions ‘Special Raiding Squad 1 SAS’.His medal group is mounted for wear, and includes the 1939-45 Star, the Africa Star with 8th Army clasp, the Italy Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, 1939-45 War Medal, and the Territorial Efficiency Medal which is named to the edge as ‘908535 Pte G. Hutchinson Para.Regt’.His miniature medal group is also mounted for wear, but additionally the Territorial Efficiency Medal has 2 additional clasps for longer service (these are absent from the full size version). The 1st S.A.S. Regt card certificate certifies that L/Cpl Hutchinson served in the 1st Special Air Service Regiment from 05.06.42 to 16.11.45, during the following campaigns - Western Desert Italy. It also details his campaign stars awarded. This is dated 16.11.45 and is signed, albeit faintly by Lieut-Col Paddy Mayne. The cloth insignia includes a WW2 era set of embroidered wings, a post WW2 set of wings, a post WW2 1st S.A.S. Shoulder title, 2 bullion embroidered badges (the cap badge is possibly WW2 era), and a white screen printed badge, likely from a ski outfit, given its colour. The photograph album contained ‘snapshot’ images of Gerald and fellow servicemen within the regiment.Notably, these include images seemingly taken in North Africa, plus on ski manoeuvres in the Cedars of Lebanon circa 1943.The photograph of Paddy Mayne on the first page we believe is an already published image. The album is a fascinating archive of images relating to the S.A.S from the WW2 era through to the mid 1950’s.The majority of which will be so far unpublished so far as we can ascertain. There are a few loose photographs, one of which show L/Cpl Hutchinson smoking a pipe, and given the type of side cap he is wearing, this will date from circa 1942.According to information supplied by the vendor, Gerald moved to Canada after his service with the armed forces, where he took a job as a miner. He later worked for the DHSS up until his retirement. This is an incredible and rare archive charting the service of one man in one of the world’s most famous regiments. Please note: due to quantity of photographs and items within this archive, not all items are shown in the images.Condition: generally very good throughout.Normal light service wear to the medal groups and the cloth insignia. The photograph album and loose photographs show a little wear and tear, but are mostly in good condition. The paper ephemera shows normal wear, but the details contained on them remains legible. The remaining scrapbooks, publications and other items are mostly good, with just light wear and tear.
