ELIZABETH SOUTHERDEN THOMPSON BUTLER (LADY BUTLER) (BRITISH 1846 - 1933), WATERING HORSES, AUTUMN MANOEUVERS watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed and dated 1875 23cm x 39cm Mounted, framed and under glass Label verso: Malcolm Innes Gallery, Edinburgh Note: Elizabeth Southerden Thompson, Lady Butler (3 November 1846 - 2 October 1933) was a British painter, one of the few female painters to achieve fame for history paintings, especially military battle scenes, at the end of that tradition. She was married to Lieutenant General Sir William Butler, and is also known as Lady Butler. Some of her most famous military scenes come from the Napoleonic Wars, but she covered most major 19th-century wars and painted several works showing the First World War.
PAUL CHABAS (FRENCH 1869 - 1937), LA NYMPHE oil on canvas, signed 30cm x 21cm Framed Note: Paul Chabas was born in Nantes, and trained under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1890. Chabas won the Prix National at the 1899 Paris Salon with his Joyeux Ébats. He was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 and in 1912 received the Médaille d'honneur. His preferred subject was the female nude in a natural setting. He was, and still is, considered to be one of Europe's greatest painters of nudes. His most famous painting, September Morn (1912), became a "Succès de scandale" in the United States in May, 1913. There was much publicity, and reproductions of the painting sold briskly for years afterwards. Chabas said he did not originally intend to sell the painting, because it was his wife's favorite. When he entered the painting in the Paris Salon of 1912, he set a price of $10,000, which he believed no one would pay. Leon Mantashev, son of oil magnate Alexander Mantashev, was willing to meet this price, and the painting was sold to him. In the 1890s, Chabas had illustrated books by such authors as Paul Bourget and Alfred de Musset. He also did some illustrating work for the French publisher Alphonse Lemerre. He became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1921 and received the Légion d'honneur in 1928. From 1925 to 1935 he was president of the Société des Artistes Français. He died in Paris on May 10, 1937 and it was reported at the time that US buyers alone had purchased more that seven million reproductions of his paintings. On 15th November 2015 McTear's sold a larger watercolour by Paul Chabas (lot 8, The Lily, for £6000 hammer)
MINIATURIST "H. M .S" (ENGLISH, EARLY 18TH CENTURY), AN HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT MINIATURE, IN WATERCOLOUR ON VELLUM LAID ON CARD. THE SUBJECT IS THE COMPOSER GEORGE FREDERICK HANDEL initialled "H.M.S" and dated 1742 to centre right, titled "Handel" lower edge 9.5cm x 7.5cm (oval) Framed and under glass Label verso: Autograph gifting the piece to "Nancy Kelly, Cork, Nov 3rd., 1935", from the eminent composer Percival Benedict Kahn (1880 - 1966). He was acclaimed as the composer of a 1913 version of "Ave Maria". Above the dedication on the label verso, there is a manuscript annotation of the first three bars, in the composer's hand. Note: It is possible this was painted "from life", as it does not appear to be a copy, or version, of any of the known portraits of Handel done before the date of this one, 1742. This would make it very rare. There is evidence of old water damage to Handel's face on the right side, but in otherwise sound condition.
* VIVIEN JOHN (BRITISH 1915 - 1994), A VIEW IN THE DOLOMITES oil on canvas, signed and dated 1980 45cm x 40cm Framed Note: Vivien John was the younger daughter of Dorelia and Augustus John and the niece of Gwen John. Her parents had little faith in education, so Vivien and her sister Poppet were never sent to school. Theirs was a wild and happy childhood, running barefoot in the countryside, riding ponies and donkey-carts, and playing with gypsies. Vivien painted and drew from a very early age, receiving only minimal instruction from her father and a bit more from such close family friends as Matthew Smith and Sue Palmer. In 1932 Augustus allowed her to attend the Slade School, but only on condition she received no instruction. Three years later she had her first exhibition at the Cooling Gallery, after which she moved to the Euston Road, where she studied with William Coldstream and Victor Pasmore. The following year she went to Kingston, Jamaica, where she exhibited with her father. She travelled to Italy and Provence with him, roamed through Spain and Greece with friends and visited her aunt Gwen. In 1944 she returned to Paris to study at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. Next year she entered the Chelsea School of Art, then met and married Dr John White, a haematologist with a fondness for exotic locales. The last 15 years of her life, though marred by ill-health, were very happy. She felt that she was finally out from under the shadow of Augustus and Gwen, she was painting fluently and rapidly in oil and exhibited frequently, selling well.
