LALAOUNIS: AN 18K GOLD AND EMERALD NECKLACEComposed of a woven chain of slightly flexible design, suspending two bull heads as terminals, each enhanced with a circular-cut emerald and with rope-twist detailing, to an adjustable barrel-shaped motif of similar detailing, in 18K gold, signed Lalaounis, numbered A21, with partial maker’s mark, French import assay marks, adjustable length, longest length 69cmIlias Lalaounis was born in Athens in 1920, the third generation of a family of goldsmiths and watchmakers from Delphi. After completing his university studies, he joined his uncle’s jewellery firm, where he apprenticed as a goldsmith and honed the skills that would define his future as a master craftsman. Amid the instability of World War II, Lalaounis took over the family business and began exploring the art of his ancestors, driven by a deep passion for history. As Greece recovered from the war, Lalaounis’s vision took shape. He sought to revitalise Greek museum artifacts by transforming them into jewellery. Reviving ancient techniques, he introduced modern technology while focusing on educating his fellow craftsmen in forgotten skills such as granulation, filigree, hand-weaving, and hand-hammering. In 1957, he founded the Greek Jewellers Association and unveiled his first collection, the Archaeological Collection, which drew inspiration from Classical, Hellenistic, and Minoan-Mycenaean art. This fusion of modern jewellery with historical elements garnered international attention. After his uncle’s passing, Lalaounis established his own company, setting up headquarters on Karyatidon Street, at the foot of the Acropolis.Unlike many of his peers, who often preferred diamonds and large gemstones, Lalaounis discovered his passion for gold early in his career, referring to it as "the most human material." His collections, rich in 18- and 22-karat gold, were inspired by a wide range of cultures and historical periods, from prehistoric to Minoan art, as well as Persian, Byzantine, Chinese, and Tudor styles. In the 1970s, Lalaounis continued to innovate, exploring new forms of expression influenced by nature, science, the intricate movements of cells, and celestial themes. As recognition of his work grew, so did his business, expanding across Europe, Asia, and America. He became the first goldsmith to be honoured by the Institut de France, Académie des Beaux-Arts et des Lettres, for his remarkable contributions to the art of jewellery. Since 1998, Lalaounis’s legacy of creativity has been carried on by his four daughters. They continue to uphold a long-standing family tradition, ensuring that the LALAoUNIS legacy is passed down to future generations. Her family were patrons of Shakespeare's theatre company, and her wedding has been put forward as one of the possible occasions when A Midsummer Night's Dream was performed for the first time in public. The couple had a daughter, Theophila Berkeley (1596–1643) and a son, George Berkeley, 8th Baron Berkeley (1601-1658). Like her mother, Elizabeth was a highly educated woman and patron of the arts. Due to her husband's financial irresponsibility she took over responsibility for the management of their household. When Sir Thomas died aged 37 in 1611, Elizabeth paid off his many outstanding debts. In 1622, she married secondly, Sir Thomas Chamberlain, a Justice of the King's Bench. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Bone's pencil drawing, squared for transfer, and inscribed Thos Lord Brockhurst 1st Earl of Dorset/ from the original at Knole - Novr - 16 - 1813, is also in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG D17132).The sitter was the son of Richard Sackville and his wife, Winifred Brydges. Both his parents were extremely well-connected - his father served as Chancellor of the Exchequer whilst his mother was the daughter of the Lord Mayor of London. In addition, he could claim kinship with Henry VIII's ill-fated queen, Anne Boleyn. In 1555, Sackville married Cecily Baker and the pair had seven children. Whilst on a visit to Rome in the mid-1560s, he was detained for a fortnight as a prisoner; although whether this punishment was on account of debt or some other misdemeanour is unclear. Whatever the reason, it did not prevent him from being elevated to the peerage as Baron Buckhurst in 1567. Upon his return to England, Sackville entered into the service of the crown and, in 1571, he was sent on a diplomatic mission to France. The ostensible purpose of the trip was to congratulate King Charles IX on his marriage to a daughter of the Austrian Emperor. However, it seems likely that he also entered into negotiations connected with the proposed alliance of Elizabeth I with Charles' brother, the Duke of Anjou. In 1572, Sackville was one of the peers who sat in on the trial of the Duke of Norfolk for high treason (he was found guilty and subsequently beheaded). This was but one of a number of occasions when he found himself caught up in the domestic turmoil of the period. In 1586, for example, he was chosen to convey to Mary, Queen of Scots, the tidings of her imminent execution. His reward for the completion of this unhappy duty was an appointment to the position of Ambassador to the United Provinces. Although he generally acquitted himself well, the Queen's favourite, the Earl of Leicester, used his influence to have him recalled and he found himself placed under a form of house-arrest for having presumed to criticise Elizabeth's own abilities as a diplomat. However, in the closing years of the 16th century, he returned to favour, succeeding Lord Burghley as Lord High Treasurer in 1599, besides assuming the chancellorship of the University of Oxford. In addition to his career as statesman, Sackville was also a writer of some note. Together with Thomas Norton, he co-authored the 1561 play Gorboduc, which was the first English drama to be written in blank verse and which dealt with the consequences of political rivalry. Two years later, he made a contribution to the Mirror for Magistrates, with his poem entitled Complaint of Henry, Duke of Buckingham. However, his first truly significant work was Induction, in which he describes a poet's harrowing journey into Hell, where he encounters all manner of allegorical figures representing suffering and despair. In 1608, Sackville (who had latterly been created Earl of Dorset by the new king, James I) had a massive stroke whilst seated at the council table and died quite suddenly. His remains were buried in Westminster Abbey. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

In honour of this union Lord Russell was created Baron Howland of Streatham. She was a prolific miniature painter working in both watercolour and enamel, specialising in copies of old portraits, of which the present work is an excellent example. Cassiobury, mentioned in the inscription, was the family seat of Lord Essex which he reconstructed extensively, advised by James Wyatt for the building and Humphrey Repton for the grounds. Beaumont's first work was Salmacis and Hermaphroditus, in 1602 and by 1605, Beaumont had written commendatory verses to Volpone one of Ben Jonson's masterpieces. Soon after, he met John Fletcher and together they formed one of the most dynamic and productive of writing teams that English theatre has ever produced. In 1609, the two collaborated in earnest on Philaster. The play was performed by the King's Men at the Globe Theatre and at Blackfriars. It was a great success. Their careers were now well and truly launched and into the bargain they had ignited and captured a public taste for tragicomedy. There is an account that at the time the two men shared everything. They lived together in a house on the Bankside in Southwark, ' they also lived together in Bankside, sharing clothes and having 'one wench in the house between them.' Or as another account puts it 'sharing everything in the closest intimacy.'This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A documentary Meissen artist's proof of a model of a badger from the Reinicke Fuchs, circa 1922, modelled by Max EsserSigned in gold at the base 'M. Esser 1922', decorated in brown and black tones, standing on an oval base with four feet picked out in gilding, leaning its front paws of a tree stump, 28cm high, crossed swords in underglaze-blue, incised H.244., impressed 128 and 'von 11 Uhrstücken no 1', impressed crossed swords and dot and fox, 'M Esser' incised to the front of the base, (small sprig to the back restuck)Footnotes:Provenance: The Twinight CollectionThis model is the first of 11 Artist's proofs, painted and signed by Max Esser himself. The Berlin sculptor Max Esser was the most closely related independent artist working for the Meissen factory. From 1919 Max Esser was paid by Meissen for various models, including the famous Mandarin Duck and the large table centerpiece of Reinicke Fuchs, the fable made famous by Goethe. He would be paid 10% of any profit made on any of his models for 20 years to come, a clear sign of the value he had as an artist to the factory. The complete table-centrepiece, including flower and fruit baskets, comprised 75 pieces, and in a letter from 1 June 1919 Esser writes about the modelling process: 'Was nun den Tafelschmuck 'Reinicke Fuchs' betrift, bin ich intensiv dei den Entwürfen im Massstab 1:2. Die ersten 13 Stücke, darunter die Haubtteile, stehen im Entwurf da, und gedenke ich in den nächsten Wochen den Gesamtentwurf fertig gestellt zu haben. [As for the table decoration 'Reineke Fuchs,' I am currently working intensively on the designs at a 1:2 scale. The first 13 pieces, including the main parts, are already drafted, and I plan to complete the overall design in the next few weeks.].' Esser became thus involved in the designs for Reinicke Fuchs that he decided to move to Meissen temporarily in 1920. In a reviewed contract between factory and artist, it is mentioned that a maximum of 11 'Uhrstücke' or artists proofs may be made and for these pieces Esser would receive 25% of the sale price. The entire project took Esser until 1926, and soon after the great recession of the late 1920s led to enormous inflation. It is not known if the entire table-centrepiece was ever sold commercially. (see: Marusch-Krohn, Caren, Meissener Porzellan 1918-1933. Die Pfeifferzeit,1993, pp.105-108). She named him speaker of the House of Commons the following year, and in 1594 chose him over Francis Bacon to be attorney general. As Attorney General he conducted several trials of treason, prosecuting the Earls of Essex and Southampton, Sir Walter Raleigh and the conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. When his first wife died, he married Elizabeth Cecil, granddaughter of Lord Burghley and niece of Robert Cecil, the most influential minister of the Queen and, for a while, James I.Coke was a champion of Common Law and held the belief that it was more powerful than the King, which upset James I. He stated that 'the King cannot change any part of the common law nor create any offence by proclamation which was not an offence before.' James appointed Coke Lord Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench, believing that he would be bound to look after the King's interests, but Coke continued to maintain the supremacy of the common law. The Privy Council brought several charges against Coke and on 14 November 1616 he was dismissed. By 1617 Coke was back in the Privy Council and in the Star Chamber. He re-entered Parliament, opposed Prince Charles' proposed marriage to a Spanish princess and took part in drawing up bribery charges against Francis Bacon. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
