The first of the three aviation meetings at Cholet in western France took place in July 1910. Three airmen were engaged to demonstrate flying distances, manoeuvres and altitude. The airmen were Leon Versepuy, Emile Obre and Roland Garros who had just gained his pilot's licence. The more famous second event took place in June 1912 when 35 machines were entered into a triangular race between Angers - Cholet - Saumur - Angers. It was a 97-mile circuit flown between 9 am and 7.30 pm, three times on Sunday, 16 June, and four times the next day, making a total of 684 miles. Of the 35 registered participants, 28 aviators qualified, and 11 took off. Due to poor weather conditions, the race was a disaster, but it was won by Roland Garros. At the back of the scrap album for the 1912 event are both size versions of the famous colour poster by Lessieux & Carrey. The third and final meeting in Cholet took place on 15 March 1914, just five months before the outbreak of the First World War. Once again poor weather interfered but not without Roland Garros attempting and succeeding in the newly fashionable loop the loop (see following lot). To an amazed audience of thousands the legendary Garros completes the manoeuvre and finally lands 'with the grace and lightness of a butterfly landing on a flower'. (3)

Lot 811

*Loop the Loop Aviation Poster. An exceedingly rare and large poster designed for Roland Garros performing the loop the loop in an exhibition at Cholet, France, 15th March 1914, printed in green and white on two white sheets, with an upside down aeroplane and printed signature of the artist P. Carrere adjacent, the text reading 'Tout a l'envers. Garros [text printed upside down:] Volera Tete en Bas Boucle la Bouclera' with circular upside down vignette of Garros's head placed beneath, printer's details to lower right margin, 'G. Delattre & Cie, 99 Fg. du Temple, Paris', minor marks and tiny old paper tape repairs to verso, some very light paper toning but overall in very fine condition, 230 x 156 cm (92 x 62.5 ins) This possibly unique survival is one of the earliest, if not the earliest, aerobatic aviation posters. The first loop the loop recorded was made by Lieutenant Petr Nikolaevich Mesterov on 9 September 1913 when he looped his Russian Army 70 HP Nieuport monoplane at Kiev in the Ukraine. At the time he was placed under arrest for risking army property, but when it emerged that he was a hero he was promoted to Captain. This feat was not known when Adolphe Pegoud pulled off the same trick on 21 September at Juvisy, near Paris. Between 25-27 September, Pegoud demonstrated his skills at Brooklands in England and by the end of the year a number of English pilots including B.C Hucks had learnt the trick themselves. The great early French aviator Roland Garros, who was to become a fighter pilot during World War I, performed this same trick to a delighted audience at Cholet on 15 March 1914. The place and date banner which have not been pasted to the bottom of the poster are to be found in the 1914 scrap album of the lot above. (1)

§ Salvador Dali, (Spanish, 1904-1989), Hommage a Terpsichore (La Danse), 1977, the two-piece bronze with green and burnished bronze patina, signed Dali and numbered 230/350 to base, foundry stamp Jemelton 1984, with certificate of authenticity 70½cm (27in) Literature: Dali in the Third Dimension: The Stratton Foundation Collection Terpsichore is the mythological muse of dance. Her name comes from the Greek "delight in dance". Dali conceived the idea for this sculpture in 1977 and it was first cast using the lost wax process in 1984. The lost wax process involves creating a wax model of the sculpture which is then encased in a fireproof mould, heated until the wax melts and is then poured out ("lost"). The mould is then refilled with bronze or metal for the final casting. Salvador Dali is one of the best known of all the surrealist artists, known particularly for his paintings. However he created a considerable number of sculptures, which can be viewed at the Dali Universe at County Hall in Westminster, including a cast of Homage to Terpsichore. In Dali's creation, he sees Terpsichore as a dual or reflected image; one soft and classical in contrast to the other hardened and statuesque. There are no features in their faces as the significance to Dali was in their figures. The dancer of smooth soft lines representing grace and the unconscious, with the other "half" of Terpsichore angular and cubist in feel, representing the chaotic rhythms of modern life. The poet and critic André Breton explained in The Surrealist Manifesto of 1924, that surrealism was a means of reuniting the conscious and unconscious so the world of dream and fantasy would be joined to the everyday rational world. Thus Dali, with his sculpture of Terpsichore, reflects the very essence of surrealism.

A Lalique berries pattern glass pendant, the pierced blue glass triangular form moulded with scrolling berries and foliage, unmarked Other Notes: René Lalique was Art Nouveau's most important jewellery designer. He developed in own unique style using non-precious metal such as enamel, glass and horn. Often inspired by the Symbolist art movement, Lalique's designs drew on many subjects including landscapes, insects and the mythogical nymph as seen in this pendant. In the 1890s Lalique began to study in detail the qualities of glass, buying his own glassworks in 1910. From this date he worked almost entirely with glass, abandoning the use of precious metals entirely. He started making press glass pendants after 1910; the invitation to his first all-glass display in his show room in Place Vendôme in 1912 was a dark green, pressed-glass medallion. Medallions were also produced by his company for the fragrance company Fioret for their Chose Promise perfume.
