Lot 284

An oval icon/locket pendant on chain, by Mario Buccellati, circa 1925, the outer border of pierced foliate ‘modellato’ decoration, with pearl and rose-cut diamond highlights and gold ribbon detail to the cardinal points, centred with a glazed compartment enclosing a silver and silver-gilt panel engraved with scene of the Holy Family with St Joseph, against a textured ground, the panel gold edged, the reverse with similar pierced work border and central hinged glazed compartment, the interior trimmed with fine two colour scalloped border, and signed to the inner rim: ‘M. BUCCELLATI - MILANO - ROMA’’ suspended from a two row seed pearl and textured gold bead chain, contained within fitted brown leather case by Mario Buccellati, Milano Roma Firenze, length excluding suspensory loop 59mm, chain length 65cm. £5,000-£7,000 --- Mario Buccellati was the founder of one of Italy’s greatest jewellery houses. Born in 1891 into a family of goldsmiths, Mario Buccellati was apprenticed to the jewellers Beltrami & Bernati in Milan. After the First World War, in 1919, the former ‘apprentice’ took over the firm, renaming the company with the family name, the jewellery store located at Largo Santa Margherita, near La Scala Theatre and Milan cathedral. Inspired by the arts of the Italian Renaissance, Buccellati were unusual in that all the processes for producing a jewel were performed in one workshop, from the original design to the finished piece. Mario introduced various methods of texture-engraving, often using mixed metals of silver and gold, or platinum and gold. The different engraving techniques are called rigato (parallel lines cut on to the surface of metal to obtain a sheen effect), telato (texture, obtained by fine cross-hatched lines imitating the texture of linen), segrinato (engraving in every direction with overlapping textures), ornato (decoration based on natural forms such as animals, leaves and flowers), and modellato (the most delicate engraving technique reproducing several designs chiselled in three dimensions, mainly used for decorative borders). When the process is complete, the finish will often resemble a fine fabric - linen, lace or silk. Mario’s work was widely acclaimed at the 1920 Exposition in Madrid where his entire collection was sold. His prestigious clientele included the Royal families of Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, popes, cardinals and intellectuals, as well as musicians, writers and famous artists. The renowned Italian poet, Gabriele D’Annunzio, friend and client of Mario, described him as the ‘Prince of Goldsmiths’. Mario opened two boutiques, one in Rome in 1925 and one in Florence four years later. In 1951, Mario and his son Luca opened their first store in New York, with another following, on 5th Avenue, in 1954. In 1965, after the death of Mario, the management of the firm was conducted by four of his five sons. In 1971, the new separate brand Gianmaria Buccellati was launched by Gianmaria, who would go on to open stores around the world, including the Place Vendome in Paris. Gianmaria also established the Italian Gemological Institute, IGI, in 1973, remaining it’s president for the next quarter century. In 2011, the two firms of Mario Buccellati and Gianmaria Buccellati merged to form the single firm of Buccellati.

Formerly the Property of Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon An Art Deco diamond brooch, circa 1930, the openwork cartouche of geometric design with pointed terminals formed of pleated folds, set throughout with old brilliant, single and baguette-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum, the reverse with applied plaque stamped ‘PLATINUM’, later fitted Cartier case, total diamond weight approximately 6.10 carats, length 6.8cm. £6,000-£8,000 --- Provenance: Sotheby’s, Property of Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, lot 222, sale 14 June 1979. Accompanied by the original Sotheby’s purchase receipt and catalogue, and two press cuttings from The Telegraph dated 25 May 1979 and 15 June 1979. The lot was purchased by the vendor directly from Sotheby’s in 1979. Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret Rose, (1930-2002) was the younger daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York and sister to Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II. Born at Glamis, the ancestral home of the Duchess of York, the Princess was the first royal baby to be born in Scotland since the year 1600. The family lived in London Piccadilly until 1936, when the abdication of King Edward VIII and the ascension of the Duke of York to King George VI, moved the family to Buckingham Palace and the residences of Windsor Castle, Sandringham House and Balmoral Castle. Now second in line to the throne, Princess Margaret was to live her life in the public eye, becoming one of the world’s most celebrated socialites, iconised for her striking beauty, style and taste. From an early age the Princess fully engaged with the Royal Family’s public work and went on to become patron or president of over eighty organisations. With a particular interest in the fields of welfare and the arts, her roles ranged from President of the National Society and Royal Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children to Honorary Doctor of Music at London University and President of the Royal Ballet. On 6 May 1960 the Princess married the photographer Anthony Armstrong-Jones at Westminster Abbey. The following year he was created Earl of Snowdon and Viscount Linley. The couple, residing at Kensington Palace, went on to have two children; Lord Linley, born 3 November 1961 and Lady Sarah Chatto, born 1 May 1964. The marriage of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon was dissolved in May 1978.  The following year, Princess Margaret sold a collection of seven personal jewels at Sotheby’s, comprising five brooches, one pendant and a pair of earrings, this Art Deco brooch being one of the items offered for sale. The collection raised £11,000. Princess Margaret’s love of jewellery, and brooches in particular, was evident throughout her life, always accessorising her outfits with carefully chosen examples. The Princess favoured this diamond brooch for numerous state functions and special engagements throughout the 1950s and 60s, usually pinning the brooch to the blue sash of the Royal Victorian Order, on her right shoulder, and wearing alongside several important Royal jewels. Princess Margaret was appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in June 1953. In 1956 Princess Margaret departed London for a five-week official tour of East Africa. At a banquet in Port Louis, Mauritius, the Princess is photographed wearing this brooch together with the Cartier rose brooch, Queen Mary’s diamond rivière and the Cartier Halo tiara. In 1958 Princess Margaret attended a banquet celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Royal Air Force and wore this brooch again with Queen Mary’s diamond rivière and the Cartier Halo tiara. Princess Margaret purchased the Poltimore tiara for her wedding in 1960 and it is perhaps this tiara in particular that became famously associated with her. On 10 July 1962, Princess Margaret is photographed at Buckingham Palace dressed in a pink satin evening gown and wearing the Royal Victorian Order with this diamond brooch, the Poltimore tiara and again her favourite necklace, Queen Mary’s rivière. Later that year, in August, Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon visited the Caribbean island of Jamaica, where the Princess represented her sister Queen Elizabeth II at the island’s celebrations of Independence, gained after more than 300 years of British rule. On 6 August, Princess Margaret opened the first session of the Jamaican Parliament in Kingston, again wearing this brooch on her right shoulder over the Royal Victorian Order, with the Lotus Flower tiara to her hair.

A FRENCH GILT BRASS AND GLASS-BEAD HIGHLIGHTED PORCELAIN MANTEL CLOCK GARNITURE ACHILLE BROCOT, PARIS, WITH PANELS BY BARLUET ET CIE, CRIEL AND MONTEREAU, CIRCA 1890The circular two train eight-day gong striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by disc bob pendulum incorporating Brocot type regulation to suspension, the backplate stamped with oval star-centred trademark AB over serial number 2164 15.5, the circular cream ground porcelain dial decorated with butterfly inhabited silver and gilt floral spray incorporating yellow/orange glass bead applied infill to the wings of the insect within Roman numeral cartouche chapter ring, with blued steel hands within canted brass bezel, the break-arch case with surmount cast as a twin handled urn resting on scrolls and with four foliate bud finials to angles over moulded cornice and front inset with a concave-topped porcelain panel beneath the dial decorated with two butterflies incorporating toned glass bead applied infill to the wings set within gilt and silvered flowering foliage, the rear of the panel with an underglaze trademark mark B & CIE, DEPOSE, CRIEL ET MONTEREAU and inscribed in puce script 4576, Papillon, on skirt base with generous gilt and silvered acanthus cast top moulding and toupe feet; the garniture side pieces each formed as a twin handled urn with pineapple finial over conforming bead decorated butterfly inhabited flowering foliage to the shouldered ovoid porcelain body and leaf cast foot. The clock 34cm (13.5ins) high, 18cm (7ins) wide, 13cm (5ins) deep; the side pieces 25.5cm (10ins) high, 11.5cm (4.5ins) wide. Provenance: Private collection, East Midlands. Achille Brocot is recorded in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their history and development as born in 1817 and died in 1878. The Museums Victoria (Australia) website notes that Achille patented several improvements in clock mechanism escapements, and invented the 'Brocot Suspension', an adjustable pendulum spring which enabled time keeping to be regulated by altering the length of the pendulum suspension spring by a key turned in the dial. He also introduced a jewelled deadbeat escapement, sometimes called a visible escapement as it was often mounted in the middle of the dial. Achille was awarded a first class medal at the Paris Exhibition in 1855, and in 1856 was appointed Treasurer to La Société des Horlogers in Paris. He published a "Calculation of the Wheels by Approximation" in 1862. His sons Achille and Paul continued the business following Achille senior's death 1878. The firm was taken over by rival clock maker Gustave Gibaudet in 1889.The origins of the porcelain elements can be traced to back to Louis-Martin Lebeuf (1792-1854) and Jean Baptiste Garften Millet (1797-1875) who purchased the combined faience factories of Criel and Montereaux in 1841 (which had been under the same ownership since 1819). They employed George Vernon and his son of the same name as art directors who were subsequently succeeded by Henry Félix Anatoie Barluet at some point after 1849. Barluet went on to create a worker city to house his employees, however the Criel factory was sadly destroyed by fire in 1895 leaving the Montreaux factory to continue alone in the production of pottery and soft paste porcelain well into the 20th century. The porcelain sections of the current lot are unusual in that they incorporate applied clustered coloured glass bead infill to the wings of the butterflies which catches and reflects light in such a way as to bring the insects to life. This is due to the intensity of the reflected light changing as the angle from which they are viewed varies, and is particularly effective when lit straight-on by a single source. This scarce form of decoration is normally only seen on a select few carriage clock cases with two examples illustrated in Roberts, Derek CARRIAGE and other Travelling CLOCKS pages 158-59 (Figs 9.55 and 9.56). The presence of the Barluet et Cie mark on the back of the porcelain front panel of the current lot would appear to confirm the source of these unusual bead-decorated panels.Condition Report: Movement appears complete and all original. The going train will just about run and the clock will strike however a gentle clean/service is required. The dial has a relatively faint hairline crack across the dial passing from XI to V otherwise is in good condition with the insect missing only one or two tiny glass beads. The frieze panel is in good condition with faults limited to a few beads missing to the upper tip of the blue butterfly wing and the right-hand tip of the blue/orange butterfly wing. Case otherwise is in good original condition with light to moderate wear to the gilt and silvered details and overall slight mellowing to the lacquered brass finishes. The side pieces have a few beads missing in places and the finishes are a little more oxidised than those of the clock otherwise are in good original condition.Clock has a pendulum but no winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

The ebonised slips also appear to have been refreshed to the surfacesThe plates are old with bloom and depletion - There is a paint deposit to one side mirror plate which would benefit from a cleanThe backboards appear to be original - please see our website for a view of the rear of this mirror they have old splits and cracks, some chips and losses,Please refer to additional images for visual reference to conditionThe width across the mirror measured from the centre of the columns is 128cm Condition Report Disclaimer

An important Paris porcelain cup and saucer from Nelson's 'Baltic Service',c.1802, each decorated with a border of oak leaves and gilded acorns, both pieces with a fouled anchor within a victor's laurel wreath and gilt inscription 'Nelson 2nd April Baltic', the handle and borders of both with further gilding '15th Febry', 'San Joseph', and 'Glorious 1st August', the saucer and cup with additional oak leaf reserves with banderols inscribed 'Nelson San Joseph' and 'Nelson Aboukir',cup 10cm wide6cm widesaucer 12.5cm diameter (2)Provenance: The residual contents of Bixley Manor by instruction of the executors of Sir Timothy Colman KG.Accompanied by a receipt of purchase from Mortlock's Ltd., dated August 1895.The various Baltic and Nelson Services were presumably created in some haste ahead of the Lord Mayor's inauguration, and it is likely the London decorating workshop responsible used the only blank porcelain available to them, a mixture of Coalport and Paris porcelain. The assemblage must have been very large as Nelson started to divide the amount and give to various relatives almost immediately. One 'Baltic Set' tea service was delivered to Merton, the house Nelson shared with Emma and is listed in the 1805 inventory. Another, slightly larger, set belonged to Nelson's sister, Catherine 'Kitty' Matcham, and this featured in Sotheby's sale of 'Nelson and the Napoleonic Wars, including The Matcham Collection', 5 October 2005, lot 22. According to family tradition, another set for dessert with an oak leaf border had been given to Catherine by her brother, Horatio Nelson. It is conceivable her Baltic tea set had also been passed on to her by her brother because it was surplus to Nelson's needs. More of the set of the Baltic porcelain was given to Nelson's brother, William. Horatio Nelson's brother William married Hilare Barlow in March 1829. Hilare was the daughter of Admiral Sir Robert Barlow GBC, whose illustrious naval career included command of HMS Triumph, part of Nelson's fleet in the Mediterranean. Porcelain from both the 'Nelson' and the 'Baltic' Services was inherited by Nelson's niece, Charlotte, who was William Nelson's daughter from his first marriage. Charlotte Nelson, Duchess of Bronte, had received many of Nelson's possessions after his death. Charlotte may even have had a Baltic tea set of her own, as she had accompanied her uncle to the Lord's Mayor's Inauguration. Charlotte married Samuel Hood, Baron Bridport, and Nelson's porcelain and many other relics were inherited by his son, Alexander Nelson, Viscount Bridport. Lord Bridport's sale at Christie's in July 1895 featured many pieces of the Baltic service. Other pieces are in the Nelson-Ward Collection bequeathed to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich in 1946 by the grandson of Horatia, Nelson and Emma Hamilton's daughter.Due to the date of the surviving invoice, I think it pretty obvious that this teacup and saucer of Paris porcelain came from the Bridport sale at Christie's in July 1895. This is a clincher for me in terms of the date and is useful creating a direct route for the cup and saucer in terms of provenance, even from the day of the presentation itself, and the eyewitness description we have from Charlotte Nelson who was eventually to own it.We are grateful to Paul Crane for his help with cataloguing this rare piece from Nelson's Baltic Service.Cup - rim chip of 2.5m to the inside and a glaze crack. Painted decoration good. Some loss to gilt, particularly the inscriptions and date. Surface scratches and wear commensurate with age. Loss to glaze and residue to the inside.Saucer - rim chip of 1cm. Loss to gilt inscriptions. Surface scratches.
