Welsh Flyweight Billy Eynon original leather Flyweight Champion boxing belt. Born in Treharris South Wales he fought at a number of fairground boxing booths, making a name for himself, his first professional encounter was with Eddie Morgan in Methyr. He was drafted into the Royal Artillery and fought in WWI where he was wounded, after recovery he continued to box winning the Army Featherweight Title in 1918 and then met the Navy Champion in Salonika Greece. After the war Eymon continued to box and later became a bantam weight and in 1920 beat George Clark on points and then went on to challenge British Bantam-weight title holder Jim Higgins (Lonsdale belt winner 1921). He retired from boxing in 1927 due to eye injuries which could have rendered him blind. A bullied 8 year old came across a gym in Gloucester where he was taken under the wing of the men who trained there. He associated with many local and provincial boxers and travelled extensively to watch boxing shows (as they were known then). There he met Jimmy Jury where he sat ringside as a youngster and later became lifelong friends. He attended fights in London where he became friendly with other boxing enthusiasts from the Welsh Boxing Association. Both his and Jimmy Jury's collection grew that included letters from Freddie Mills who was a good friend to Jimmy when on the boxing booth circuit. Many of the scrap books he collated himself but much of the memorabilia was bequeathed by his boxing friends, this became an obsession that stayed with him throughout his adult life.
