A 1939 Sunbeam Talbot 10 drophead coupé restoration project, black. This Sunbeam Talbot 10 drophead coupé is known to the owner's club and is believed to be one of only nineteen survivors. Now requiring a full restoration, this rare drophead coupé was first registered to a gentleman in Northern Ireland. It would subsequently reside in Southern Ireland before being purchased by our vendor in August 2014 with the intention of fully restoring the car. Unfortunately due to ill health this has not been possible. The vendor believes that the car had been in storage since 1974. The cylinder head has been removed to inspect the bores and will remain off the block. This exciting project offers the next owner the opportunity to restore a very rare car to its former glory. No accompanying paperwork See illustration

Lot 25

A 1982 Lancia Montecarlo S2 coupé, registration number MGH 4Y, ***chassis number 137AS0005884 (not 137A50005884)***, engine number 007989, red. Two versions of Lancia's stylish coupé were manufactured over a six year period in both coupé and Targa forms. First known as the Beta Montecarlo from 1975 with its inline twin cam four cylinder engine producing 118 bhp, a top speed of 119 mph and a 0-60 mph time of just under ten seconds. The second generation (S2) became available two years later incorporating some improvements over the original concept including fitting larger front discs and calipers, removing the servo altogether, a restyled front end featuring a new split grille design first seen on the Delta a year earlier, the buttresses were partially glazed to improve rear visibility, an aluminium strip was fitted in place of the bodycoloured metal where the badging was located previously, a new alloy wheel design was incorporated with 14 inch rims to house the large brakes. The interior had a new two spoke steering wheel replacing the original three spoke version. The engine gained a higher compression ratio, new carburettors and electronic ignition to improve driveability, while the suspension geometry was also revised. Production ran for only a single year with 1,123 coupés and 817 Targas produced. This revised S2 coupé version has continuous history from new, with our vendor taking possession in 2008. The Lancia is finished in red with a black leather interior and has been in dry storage with its Fiat X1/9 stable mate since its last MOT expired in April 2009. The Montecarlo will now require recommissioning, but the Lancia rolls freely. The accompanying history file contains ***an incomplete run of MOTs from December 1985 to 2007***, maintenance and restoration receipts, a list of all recorded owners and an original owner's handbook. This Lancia now looks for a new appreciative owner to further cherish and enjoy it. V5C, no MOT See illustrations

A 1963 Hillman Super Minx convertible, registration number UFX 61, chassis number B1300286HHCO, engine number B1300286HHCO, white. Originally supplied in 1963 by Craven Brothers in Portland, Dorset to its first owner. UFX 61 stayed in his ownership until 1989 when purchased by the second owner, a Mr Martin Wills of Shaftesbury, Dorset, who retained the car until 1997. During his ownership the decision was made to carry out a total ground up restoration of the car. This work was started but unfortunately after a long time and considerable expenditure due to ill health the car was not completed and sold unfinished to its third owner in 1997, a Mr Silvey of Poole. His subsequently completed the restoration between 1997 and 2003. Finished in white with red interior, it has only been used for club meetings and outings and has been exhibited on the Hillman Owner's Club stand at the prestigious NEC classic car show in Birmingham. Mr Silvey has now had to take the decision to give up driving and hence he is now parting with the car. UFX 61 is now offered for sale having had just three owners, and the odometer reading of 55,000 miles is reported to be correct. It retained its original registration number, tools including starting handle, its original handbook, radio with owner's manual and the supplying agents plaque is still attached to the dashboard. The Hillman will be supplied with a history file containing a number of previous MOT certificates and sundry paperwork. A very collectable car and one of only very few left registered with the DVLA, it offers a tremendous opportunity. ***No RF60***, V5, V5C, ***MOT to August 2018 (not September 2018)*** See illustrations

The new crisp styling incorporated the Pagoda hardtop, so called because of its resemblance to a Chinese Pagoda roof, a monocoque chassis equipped with all round independent suspension, power assisted steering, assisted discs/drum brakes and a 150 bhp straight six engine with either four speed manual or automatic transmission. This automatic 230 SL was original registered overseas and would receive its first British registration mark in 1967. There is a large history file accompanying the SL with numerous receipts for thousands of pounds, previous owner history including a film company and IBM, previous MOTs and sundry paperwork. Henry Bone, RA (British, 1755-1834) Portrait of Charles Genevieve Louis Auguste André Timothée d'Eon de Beaumont, called Le Chevalier d'Eon (1728-1810) signed and dated "H Bone 1793" lower left and inscribed with the sitter's name to the reverse watercolour on ivory, oval, in a gold-plated frame 8.50 x 6.80cm (3 x 3in) Other Notes: Le Chevalier d'Eon was one of the most enigmatic figures of the late 18th century. Although known to posterity as a soldier, spy and writer, he most famously distinguished himself as a transvestite. One of the first reported instances of his cross-dressing was at a ball at Versailles where, according to his own account, both Madame Pompadour and Louis XV attempted to seduce him. Even though he dressed mostly as a man throughout his public career, he notably managed to infiltrate the court of Empress Elizabeth of Russia by presenting himself as a woman whilst working as a spy for the French King. After joining the King's secret service in 1755, he was sent on his first mission to Russia and briefly fought in the Seven Years' War. He was then posted to London in 1763 where he worked undercover as a spy for Louis XV. However, following his altercation with the French Ambassador, whom d'Eon sued for attempted murder, he fell out of the King's favour. Out of spite d'Eon published secret state documents in 1764, which stirred a great sensation, but also led to a libel suit. D'Eon was declared an outlaw and was found guilty by the High Court in London, barely managing to escape dressed as a woman. He was eventually paid off by Louis XV and went on to work as a spy, living in political exile in London. Inscribed "Monsieur / Le Chevalier d'Eon" verso. Slight staining left of the sitter's chest and top right, along the sitter's wig.

Lot 45

A rare and early 'nip't diamond waies' pedestal bowl and cover, decorated overall with a 'honeycomb' pattern, raised on a foliate pedestal 13 x 12.50cm (5 x 5in) Other Notes: The technique of "Nip't Diamond Waies" originated in Venice and was popular in the Netherlands for decorating bottles and flasks in the 17th century. The term was first used in 1677 by George Ravenscroft, who used the technique to decorate early British vessels of lead glass, and this method of ornament continued in England into the first half of the 18th century. The manufacturing process involved parallel ribs moulded on the surface of a blown glass and these were pinched or "nipt" into a diamond pattern before the vessel was inflated. Decoration using "Nip't Diamond Waies" was generally replaced by honeycomb moulding by the middle of the 18th century.

Lot 122

An 18ct gold necklace by contemporary jeweller Paul Preston, composed of spectacle set discs of yellow or white gold, varying sizes and of rough textured finish, joined by short lengths of small circular links with a larger central link and suspending from the front the largest disc, to an 'S' hook clasp; Birmingham hallmarks 1976 and with maker's 'PP' stamp, four further discs with crown and 750 punches, and another with a double chevron in a cushion outline assumed to be an early signature; length 64cm, weight 16.76g Paul Preston was born in 1943, trained as an architect (double first from Oxford Poly, now Oxford Brooks), but soon abandoned that career; and while supporting himself by diving for crayfish and scrap from wrecks off the Cornish coast, became a self-taught craftsman jeweller. He lived with his family in a former nudist camp in Pembrokeshire, and with the alter ego of the Red Mole, created jewellery in precious metals, sometimes alloys of his own invention, and gemstones: one-off, detailed and sometimes emotive pieces inspired by the natural world, the art of Breon O'Casey and craftsmanship of Bernard Leech. He stopped work in 1997 for some years, suffering from clinical depression, but has taken up his unique creative baton again in the last few years; he has exhibited at galleries at home and abroad and his jewellery is in the permanent collection of the V&A (a gold and ruby brooch dated 2007 depicting 'A Charm of Goldfinches'), and his work is currently available in a number of commercial art galleries from Edinburgh to St Ives in Cornwall, including Primavera in Cambridge.

The club began organising yacht races as part of the Cowes Regatta in the 1820s, and soon introduced the now universal rule that 'port gives way to starboard' when the paths of two vessels cross. The RYS organised the original 1851 challenge race around the Isle of Wight which became known, after the first winning yacht, as the America's Cup (a token of friendly international competition, still competed for - but never yet won by Britain). Lot 560

Alexander Max Koester (German, 1864-1932) Three Ducks on a River (Drei Enten) signed lower right "A Koester" oil on canvas 43 x 74cm (17 x 29in) Alexander Koester studied art under Carl Hoff and Claus Meyer in Karlsruhe. He initially worked as a portraitist but upon moving to Klausen, South Tyrol, he started painting directly from nature and discovered a subject which preoccupied him for the next 30 years - ducks. His first exhibition of ducks in Berlin in 1899 received positive reviews. He went on to rent a studio in Munich which gave him easier access to the Bavarian landscape during the summer months. His style became increasingly reminiscent of late Impressionism with reflecting surfaces and duck feathers shimmering in shadow and light. However, unlike his French contemporaries who might have reduced the ducks to a few dabs of paint, Koester gave them each individual character and an identity of their own. His work is widely collected and exhibited. Condition appears fine. Oil on canvas which is unlined. Painting and frame in a good condition.

Lot 172

A mystery set sapphire and diamond brooch, designed as a long oval of mystery set calibré cut sapphires in a scallop edge border of round brilliant cut diamonds, unmarked yellow precious metal, clasp with safety catch, length 2.8cm, cased Other Notes: The setting of gems without visible support or metalwork - the 'serti mystérieux' - was a technique developed by several companies in the early 20th century, patents being taken out by Chaumet in 1904, and in 1933 by both Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels - the latter company coining the term 'mystery set'. It involves reciprocating grooves and ridges in the girdles of flat-edged (usually square cut) stones so that they interlock , in much the same way as those children's puzzles with a frame within which movable squares must be slid around one space at a time to make a picture. The technique is difficult and expensive, so tends to be used only for valuable stones suiting especially sapphires and rubies - emeralds being too brittle and diamonds too hard. At first only flat settings were attempted, but Van Cleef & Arpels patented a method of setting curved pieces (such as this brooch) in 1938. Despite the popularity of platinum at that period, the precious metal used most often for the trellis backing and setting is 18ct gold, being more malleable and with a lower melting point .
