[Verne, Jules]. A Journey to the Centre of the Earth, pub. The Boys' Journal, 12 monthly parts, 1870, 1st appearance in English, preceding the bookform ed. by one year, twelve b & w plts. (mostly browned), and numerous letterpress illusts., hinges split, contemp. cloth, soiled and worn, with spine split and fraying, 8vo, together with two further vols. of 'The Boys' Journal', one dated 1869 This serialisation of Jules Verne's third work is omitted from all Verne bibliographies and biographies, and none have been seen at auction. The bookform edition itself is very rarely seen. Curiously, an advertisement appears in the 1869 volume of 'The Boys' Journal' for 'Five Weeks in a Balloon', to "commence next month in the July number of The Boys' Journal". This, Verne's first work, was first published in bookform in England by Chapman and Hall in 1870. (3)
