A rare American nickel plated brass carousel carriage timepiece with duplex escapement Waterbury Clock Company, circa 1880 The movement with monometallic balance and three-wheel train set within a circular rotating carriage with pierced plates which revolves once an hour via a ÔwalkingÕ eight leaf pinion around a fixed centre wheel, the drive provided by a large standing barrel containing long mainspring mounted on the backplate with winding turn to the rear, the movement frontplate pierced to reveal the rotating carriage within applied paper Roman numeral chapter ring and with monogram trademark incorporating inscription PAT. MAY 21 1878 to lower margin, the case with ring-turned handle to the cushion moulded top above bevel-glazed front door and side panels, on cavetto moulded base with rounded angles, 11cm (4.25ins) high excluding handle; with a copy of Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS Their history and development Antique CollectorsÕ Club, Woodbridge 1974, first edition, dj, (2). The ingenious rotating carousel design for the movement of the current lot was devised from a patent submitted by D.A. Buck of Worcester, Massachusetts in 1878 with the intention to produce a reliable timekeeper from the least possible parts. The mechanism was first employed by Waterbury in their Ôlong wind watchÕ before being used in carriage timepieces (with a much larger spring barrel to increase the duration to eight-days) from the early 1880Õs. The design and layout of the this type of carriage timepiece (including train counts) is described (in great detail) in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS Their history and development pages 360-6.

Naval General Service Medal 1793 -1840 with three clasps for Thomas Durnell private of the Royal Marines with clasps for Java, Basque Roads, and Trafalgar. Naming impressed. During the battle of Trafalgar Durnell was onboard The Temeraire 98 gun, second ship in Nelson`s column behind the Victory. The Temeraire under the command of Captain Eliab Harvey was the first ship to break through the enemy lines during the battle. She was subject to heavy fighting with six ships before being trapped between two enemy ships Redoutable and Fougueux whilst trying to defend the Victory. After heavy fighting with small arms and grenade the crew of The Temeraire succeeded in boarding both ships eventually forcing the enemy to surrender. Following this action both the Victory and Temeraire engaged the Dumanoir and Formidable during the final stages of the battle. Following 1805 Durnell was onboard the Illustrious during the Battle of Basque Roads in 1809 and the Invasion of Java 1811. He died in Greenwich Hospital 7th May 1853.
Grace Pailthorpe (1883-1971), Untitled, signed, watercolour, 29 x 39cm.; 11.5 x 15.5in. * Grace Pailthorpe was the only daughter of ten children. During the First World War she saw active service as a surgeon in France and helped run a field ambulance unit. By the early twenties she was devoting herself to psychological medicine and had begun her training with a pupil of Freud, Dr Ernest Jones. She spent the rest of the decade in groundbreaking research into women`s prisons, delinquency and birth trauma. In 1932 she helped found The Institute for the Scientific Treatment of Delinquency. This led to the establishment of the `Psychopathic Clinic` later to be called the Portman Clinic that in 1948, became part of the NHS. Pailthorpe`s artistic career began at the age of 52, as a consequence of meeting Reuben Mednikoff, a professional artist. They set about immediately on a scientific project whose central aim was to use art `as a shortcut to the unconscious`. Within a few years her work was exhibited at landmark Surrealist exhibitions in London and in New York. Her artistic work pushed forward her investigation into the unconscious, linking her professional interests with Surrealist practice. She saw this practice as psychologically liberating and it led her to pioneering work in the development of art therapy in the late thirties. After the Second World War, Pailthorpe returned to psychoanalytical practice and continued to paint, although in private. She preferred painting in watercolour, a medium that allowed a speed and fluency of execution which she could equate with the `automatic` practices of Surrealism; `I felt that there must be somewhere a quicker way to the deeper layers of the unconscious than by the long drawn-out couch method and I had a feeling that it was through art. At any rate it should be used in conjunction`. She seldom exhibited during the last 25 years of her life. Artists` Resale Right ("droit de suite") may apply to this lot.

JACOBITE RISING OF 1745: Five contemporary letters sent to John Spottiswoode by an unnamed solicitor living in Edinburgh, during Prince Charles Edward Stuart`s (Bonnie Prince Charlie) six week occupation of Edinburgh in 1745. These unpublished letters describe in vivid detail the panic, the dangers faced, the rumours that were rife, the hopes for the settlement, as the Highland army were in the midst of the residents, while above impregnable in the castle the Hanoverian garrison waited. All the letters are unsigned doubtless for reasons of security should they have been intercepted. The first letter dated September 19th , just two days after the Prince`s entry into the city. The last is dated 26th October, five days later the Prince marched out of Edinburgh on his ill fated journey South *Provenance: Spottiswoode letters.
