Grayson Perry (British, b 1960) 100% ART Fine bone china plate with gold lustre Developed for the Holburne Museum, in collaboration with Kit Grover. Designed exclusively for the Holburne Museum in Grayson Perry’s inimitable style celebrates the exhibition The Pre-Therapy Years 21.5cm diameter (8.5") Grayson Perry (British, b.1960), British potter who embedded in his work images of violence and other disturbing social issues. Perry was born into a working-class family, and his interest in ceramics was kindled during childhood. By age 13 he had confided his transvestism to his diary. He studied at the Braintree College of Further Education in Essex and at Portsmouth Polytechnic in Hampshire, but it was not until the early 1980s, when he was living in a squatters’ community in London’s Camden Town, that he returned to the serious study of ceramics by way of evening art classes. At the time, he was appearing in performance pieces and art films and nursing his own aspirations as a filmmaker. He disliked the compromising and collaborating that he felt went hand in hand with filmmaking, however, and when in 1984 the first solo exhibition of his ceramic works—all created in his evening classes—sold well, he made pottery his main art form, though he continued to work in other media. From the 1990s Perry also worked in embroidery, creating such pieces as Mother of All Battles (1996), a woman’s folk costume stitched with ethnic symbols and images of weapons and killings, and Claire’s Coming Out Dress (2000). Perry was also the author of a novel, Cycle of Violence (1992). Perry achieved celebrity status in 2003 when he won the Turner Prize, one of the art world’s premier honours. His receipt of the award stirred some controversy, not only because he was the first potter to win the prize but also because of his tendency to appear in public as a cross-dresser, frequently as his alter ego, Claire, and often accompanied by his wife and daughter. In 2004 Perry mounted a solo exhibition at the Tate St. Ives museum of modern and contemporary art in Cornwall. The exhibition featured his classically shaped vases, the colourful surfaces of which served as a seductive camouflage for inscribed images and messages that were distinctly at odds with their decorative medium. Domestic violence, child abuse, pedophilia, and cultural stereotypes were some of the troubling themes that the artist habitually explored in these inscriptions. Perry acknowledged his exploitation of the decorative appeal of his pots, describing them as a “guerrilla tactic” under the cover of which “a polemic or an ideology” waited to be discovered. I Want to Be an Artist (1996), the first of his vases to be sold at auction, fetched £36,000, more than twice the presale estimate. Perry was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to contemporary art. In 2023 he was awarded a Knighthood (Knight Bachelor) for services to the Arts in the King’s New Year Honours. This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Andy Warhol (1925 - 1987) Ingrid Bergman "Herself", 1986 Lithograph on heavyweight woven paper Hand numbered in pencil Limited edition No. 1267/2400 60 x 60cm (23.5" x 23.5") Produced by Carnegie Museum of Art, back-stamped C.M.O.A Andy Warhol (b. 1925 1987) was born to Slovakian immigrants in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Andy Warhol’s career as the foremost proponent of Pop Art began during his days as a commercial artist for newspapers and magazines. Over the 1950s and ’60s he rose to become the king of the New York avant-garde, and one of the most important and iconic artists of the 20th century. Works such as Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962) and his screen prints of Marilyn Monroe have come to define our notions of 20th century art. Warhol created art out of the imagery and iconography of consumerism and celebrity culture, and applied the same commercial processes of mass production to make it. It was an idea that venerated the banality of popular culture. Warhol sought to demolish rarefaction in art and redefine the artist from Romantic visionary to an organising principle in a commercial system of mass production. Having had his first solo shows of paintings in the early 1950s, Warhol began focusing on screen printing in the 1960s. He opened his studio, The Factory, in 1963. The Factory became the centre for an entourage of transvestites, drug addicts, artists, models and musicians such as The Velvet Underground. The latter’s debut album cover featured Warhol’s now-iconic ‘peel slowly and see’ Banana. By 1965 Warhol was making seminal films such as Blow Job (1964) and Sleep (1963). The Factory would remain an important centre of New York Bohemianism, but Warhol began distancing himself from its more unconventional fringes following an attempt on his life by the radical feminist and Factory acolyte, Valerie Solanas, in 1968. In the 70s and 80s, Warhol returned to painting with works such as his ‘Oxidation Paintings’ series. He mentored and collaborated with a new generation of younger artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente. He was just 58 when he died unexpectedly following a routine gall bladder operation in 1987. Warhol’s Shot Sage Blue Marilyn made auction history at Christie’s New York in 2022. It sold for $195 million, making it the most expensive 20th-century work of art to sell at auction. This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Richard Smith (British, b 1931-2016) Two of A Kind IV a - Red x on lavender, 1978 Lithograph on paper Numbered 68/80, signed and titled in pencil by the artist 70 x 103cm ( 27.5" x 40.5") From the Bernard Jacobson Gallery Collection Richard Smith (British b 1931-2016) defies easy categorisation. Known as one of the fathers of Pop art, in his Tate retrospective in 1975 he was described by critic Barbara Rose as ‘at once in and out of touch with the currents of the mainstream’. With essays from David Alan Mellor, Chris Stephens and Alex Massouras, this new study is intended to reignite discourse around this diverse artist, whose impressive oeuvre is fertile territory for a new reassessment. Richard Smith was one of the most celebrated figures in British painting. Having earned acclaim relatively early in his life, his first retrospective opened at London’s Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1966, when he was just thirty-four. Smith’s brilliance stemmed from his negotiation between imagery from popular culture and a consistent commitment to abstraction. He tested the boundaries and potentialities of painting, advertising, film, TV and popular music, and later the natural realm would offer inspiration for his art. Yet, by 1975, his large abstract paintings seemed out of step with the prevailing mood of the art world. The result? For an artist held in such high regard among his colleagues, collectors and critics, he ultimately failed to get the degree of recognition he deserved. Richard Smith: Artworks 1954-2013 raises new questions about why this may have been the case, and proposes a reversal of an historical oversight. This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Ted Jones (Irish, 1952) Coel, Craic angus Rince, 2000 Print on paper Limited edition No. 148 / 500 Signed & numbered in pencil Published by Killarney Art Gallery, Ireland Framed & glazed 40 x 31cm (16" x 11") Ted Jones was born in Dublin in 1952. Apart from early instruction from his father, Ted was a completely self taught painter. He was encouraged to draw from a very early age and has nurtured and developed his immense talent into a style unmistakably his own. His unique style probably owes a lot to the fact that he never attended Art College, left to his own devices his style was able to evolve without influence, save his admiration for great artists such as Klimt, Rosetti & Carrivagio. In 1998, demand for his work led to the publication of the first of a series of signed limited edition prints which have been hugely successful with over 20 titles published since its inception. In fact, demand has been so strong that many of the editions are completely sold out - some of these prints are now changing hands for 10 times their original price. His first (and only) one-man exhibition in Killarney in 2005 sold out completely in a matter of hours, hitting the headlines in many Irish newspapers. 2006 saw the publication, by Killarney Art Gallery, of "A Life, Wrapped up" a signed limited edition book on his life and work. This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Gail Lilley (20th Century) Pear at the Lake, 1993 Pastel on paper Signed to front Framed & glazed 28 x 34 cm ( 11 x 13 1/2 ") Gail Lilley is an American artist. The artist's work has been offered at auction multiple times. Painting is not just a hobby for Gail Lilley, but a total job commitment. How does the wife of Peter Lilley, Secretary of State for Social Security, fit her work in with a demanding schedule? She concedes: 'It is tough sometimes but I don't go out to lunches; I have a sandwich at the easel. Peter is very good too and has lived off tomatoes on toast for weeks.' Gail held a one-day exhibition of her 'tablescapes' at 33 St James's Street and, when one reproachful buyer asked why it could not go on for longer, she replied: 'There doesn't seem any point in having a long exhibition since it sells out on the first day.' Still life with garlic, sold at Woolley & Wallis in 2020. This lot is also sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
Ted Jones (Irish, b. 1952) Gluttony, 2004 Print on paper Limited edition 148 / 250 Signed & numbered in pencil Published by Killarney Art Gallery, Ireland Framed & glazed 41.5 x 33cm (16.5" x 13") Ted Jones was born in Dublin in 1952. Apart from early instruction from his father, Ted was a completely self taught painter. He was encouraged to draw from a very early age and has nurtured and developed his immense talent into a style, which is unmistakably Ted Jones. His unique style owes a lot to the fact that he never attended Art College, left to his own devices his style evolved without influence, save the work of the great painters he admired so much, Klimt Rosetti, Carrivagio.

Mackenzie Thorpe (British, b 1956) Seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, 2007 Lithography on paper Signed, titled and numbered 95/550 - Published by Washing Green with Certificate of Authenticity Mounted 35 x 35cm (13.5" x 13.5") Mackenzie Thorpe (British, b.1956) was born in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, as the first of seven children. Thorpe's father worked as a laborer and his mother worked as a nurse. During Thorpe's early years, he used whatever items he could find to express himself artistically. He often used materials such as crayons, cigarette boxes, and pencil stubs to create artwork; he even resorted to taking his mother's eye shadow and lipstick out of her make-up bag. Following in the footsteps of other family members, Thorpe started out working as a laborer in the town shipyards. After encouragement from a friend, he decided to feed his passion for painting and drawing and began to pursue a career as an artist. In 1977, Thorpe enrolled in the Cleveland College of Art and Design, where he studied under the mentorship of Tom Wall (British, 1941–1992). He then went on to study at the Byam Shaw College of Art in London, where he earned a Fine Arts degree. Thorpe continued to live in London after he graduated in 1982, in order to work with disadvantaged children in the city. Later he moved back to North Yorkshire with his wife and children in order to provide a better life for them. Upon returning, he set up a studio and a gallery in Richmond. Much of Thorpe's artwork portrays a wide range of emotions through portrait-style depictions of animals and humans. In 2000, he won the Best Selling Published Artist award from the Fine Art Trade Guild. In that same year, he also received an honorary Master of Arts degree from Teesside University in his hometown. In 2005, he created the Mackenzie Thorpe Foundation, which supports a number of worthy causes. In the fall of 2006, he put together an outdoor exhibition in Kansas City, MO, that featured large sculptures. Thorpe plans to produce similar exhibitions in Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. Grayson Perry (British, b. 1960) Non-fungible Token Mug Fine bone china plate with platinum lustre Stamped by artist estate 21.5 cm diameter (8.5") 8.9 x 12.4 x 8.5 cm (3.5" x 5" x 3.5") Weighs approximately 230g Grayson Perry (British, b 1960) is a British potter who embedded in his work images of violence and other disturbing social issues. Peter Thursby (British, 1930 - 2011) From the series Winged Creatures or Box Spout, c. 1964 Aluminium Signed PT to back 55 x 40 x 22cm (21.5" x 16" x 8.5") The sculptor produced his first work in the wake of the Second World War, a time when new and brutal abstract art came into being, challenging the semi-abstract and the figurative. His early sculptures were hard and aggressive, with form sacrificed to surface qualities. In time a more human modernism took over. His work ranged in scale from the architectural and monumental to small pieces for domestic interiors. He worked with a range of materials, from cast concrete, stone and slate to bronze, stainless steel, aluminium and silver. His Winged Creatures series, and in the following creations, started a new exploration in his career as a sculptor where he regained an attention to form and organic qualities. L.S Lowry (British, b 1887-1976) Mrs Swindell's picture, 1967 Print on paper Signed by artist bottom right Bearing Fine Art Guild blindstamp Framed and glazed 44 x 31.5cm (17 x 12.5") Laurence Stephen Lowry (British, 1 November 1887 – 23 February 1976) was an English artist. His drawings and paintings mainly depict Pendlebury, Greater Manchester (where he lived and worked for more than 40 years) as well as Salford and its vicinity. Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. He developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures, often referred to as "matchstick men". He painted mysterious unpopulated landscapes, brooding portraits and the unpublished "marionette" works, which were only found after his death. He was fascinated by the sea, and painted pure seascapes, depicting only sea and sky, from the early 1940s. His use of stylised figures which cast no shadows, and lack of weather effects in many of his landscapes led critics to label him a naïve "Sunday painter". Lowry holds the record for rejecting British honours—five, including a knighthood (1968). A collection of his work is on display in The Lowry, a purpose-built art gallery on Salford Quays. On 26 June 2013, a major retrospective opened at the Tate Britain in London, his first at the gallery; in 2014 his first solo exhibition outside the UK was held in Nanjing, China. Govinder found work as a designer for a local greeting card company, but moved into photography and became a photographic art director, directing fashion shoots at locations across the world. In 1993, he returned to greeting card design on a freelance basis, but also worked in his own time on his own artwork designs. In 1999 he decided to go solo and approached Washington Green, the fine art publishers, with a portfolio of his work. They accepted him and promoted his work until his untimely death in 2008. He wrote: ‘My true personality reveals itself through my paintings’. This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

In the 1980s, he started out with a Nikon F-mount camera documenting his surrounding environments as a photography student. He subsequently worked as a photographer for Sleazenation, where he was employed as photography director from 1996 till 2001. Commissioned by Sleazenation to photograph Banksy's portrait in 1997, he continued to work with the artist, including as the anonymous artist's driver and photographer, before eventually becoming his gallerist. Lazarides and Banksy also launched the 'Pictures on Walls' website in 2001 to promote graffiti art, and widened their scope to work with a larger roster of street artists. He created an in-house print studio, Lazarides Editions, and worked with the artists to create prints to share with the art community. In 2016, Lazarides began curating his personal photography archive of 100,000 images containing roughly 12,000 photographs he took whilst documenting the career of Banksy, and self-published them as two books, Banksy Captured Volume I & Volume II. Banksy Captured Volume II, features further photography and commentary, and was published in March 2021. Volume Two includes reportage from Banksy's 2006 Los Angeles exhibition "Barely Legal", images of the artist's unauthorised installation inside London's Natural History Museum during 2004. BUDDHAS, BODHISATTVAS, ARHATS, AND A VAJRAPANI'Published: Roderick Whitfield (editor), Classic Chinese Art: Selected Catalogue of the Paintings and Calligraphy from the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, Surrey, 2011, pp. 18-20 and 111, no. 8.China, Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Ink, watercolors, gouache, and gold highlights on silk. Mounted as a hanging scroll with a paper frame. Finely painted with five buddhas above four bodhisattvas, nine luohan, and a fierce Vajrapani, all amid thick scrolling five-color clouds. Inscriptions: Upper left, titled ‘Buddhas of the Ten Directions, Eight Great Bodhisattvas, Luohans, and a Vajrapani’. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan. Wou Lien-Pai Museum, coll. no. 130. Dr. Wou Kiuan (1910-1997) was a Chinese diplomat and a noted scholar of Chinese art. His father, Wou Lien-Pai (1873-1944), was one the leading political figures of early 20th century China, remembered for his role as speaker and leader of parliament during the turbulent years of the Republican era. Dr. Wou himself embarked on an illustrious career in diplomacy until his retirement in 1952, when he settled in London and devoted the rest of his life to the study of Chinese art. It was no doubt fortuitous that Dr. Wou’s years of collecting coincided with an abundant availability of exceptional Chinese art on the London market. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s he was able to form a collection of well over 1,000 works that together represented virtually every category of Chinese art. At the heart of Dr. Wou’s drive to collect was a burning desire to preserve the relics of China’s rich historical past scattered across Europe, and to promote Chinese art and culture. It is unclear when Dr. Wou conceived the idea to create a place to house his collection, but in 1968, he opened the doors to the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, named in honor of his father. Over the years the museum became a ‘must see’ destination for collectors, academics, and visiting dignitaries, and Dr. Wou would delight in leading his visitors through the galleries, recounting stories of China’s glorious history.Condition: Good condition with wear, creases, small tears, and minor losses with associated old repairs. The paper frame in similar condition with losses, tears, creasing, and associated repairs. Presenting overall very well given its age and material. Dimensions: Image size 83.8 x 134 cm, Size incl. frame 94.3 x 184 cmThe grandest of the Buddhist mortuary rites is the Water-Land (shuilu) ritual. This esoteric ceremony is conducted for the salvation of “all souls of the dead on land and sea.” The ostentatious ritual was performed for imperial ancestors and high officials from the Song (960–1279) to the Ming dynasties and drew large crowds. On the second day of the weeklong ceremony, paintings are hung in the inner altar.Originally one of a pair, most likely flanking a central painting of the Buddha. It has been claimed that the total of twelve characters is a feature of a painting created at the imperial court. Almost certainly, the matching right-hand painting of the pair would have featured another inscription in gold, with details of the temple where it was dedicated and the date.At the top of the painting, against a background of auspicious 'five-colored' clouds, are five of the Buddhas of the Ten Directions. They are not individually identified, but display different mudras or hand gestures. From the left, these are: abhaya, dharmacakra, anjali, abhaya, and dhyani mudra.Immediately below them are four of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, who are more easily identifiable by the attributes they hold. From the left, the first figure, holding a khakkhara or priest's staff, and with a Sanskrit seed character in his headdress, is Kshitigarbha; next to him, holding a ruyi or wish-fulfilling sceptre, is Sarvanivaranavishkambin; following him is Maitreya holding a fan on which is depicted the sun and moon and a two-story building representing the Tushita Paradise in which he resides; and finally Samantabhadra. Similarly, the group of nine luohan in this painting would have been completed by a parallel group in the facing painting. Although they are not all immediately identifiable, they have very distinctive characters, old and young, Chinese and foreign. The first figure in the second row, holding a fan with outline clouds, is Pindola, an old man with immensely long, white eyebrows.Museum comparison:Compare a pair of related Water-Land ritual paintings, dated 1454, in the Cleveland Art Museum, accession number 1973.70.
