The Boers have 21 guns around here at present, all in jolly good positions', saying that the Boers don't fight on Sundays which gives them a day off for sleeping and washing, telling that they have two war balloons which go up daily and can see everything, saying how beautiful the weather is, telling of the deaths of fellow soldiers, 'The Boers are no mean enemy. They are using the latest guns and have search lights which they use every night. There are 23,000 Boers around here at present and we have a garrison of about 12,000 all told and could hold this place for years', saying that he is able to recognise some individual enemies by sight, mentioning good spirits after hearing of the English victory at Moon River, later on telling of the increased suffering from shortage of food and other supplies, and finally how Ladysmith was relieved on 1st March 1900, written in a clear hand in a small exercise book, the letter beginning in the middle of the book and continuing from the front, the top four lines of pp. 44-50 slight affected by damp with loss of legibility, orig. stapled stiff paper wrappers, small 8vo, together with the orig. postmarked envelope (2nd [March] 1900, Ladysmith, Natal, and 2nd April 1900, Bradford, Yorkshire) Although there are gaps of a week or more between entries sometimes, this is nonetheless a good full account of the siege with reported statistical information.
