Hodges Soileau (American, B. 1943) "Geronimo" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Geronimo Commemorative Cover postmarked September 4, 1982. Geronimo was born about 1829 on the Gila River in Arizona. He was named Goyathlay, the One Who Yawns, but after Mexican raiders slew several members of his family in 1850, he became so fierce that the Mexicans called him Geronimo. Soon his own people were using the name as a battle cry. His people joined forces with other small groups of Apaches, including the Mimbrenos of Mangas Coloradas and the Chiricahuas of the famed Cochise. Not until the 1870's did Geronimo come into public notice as a powerful Apache leader. On April 21, 1877, John P. Clum, an Indian agent, entrapped Geronimo at Ojo Caliente. This was the first and only time in his life that he was captured. Reservation life was distasteful to the free-roaming Chiricahuas and, on April 4, 1878, Geronimo led a breakout from San Carlos Reservation. After voluntarily returning, he led a second breakout on May 17, 1885. General George Crook pursued Geronimo relentlessly, and on September 23, 1887 the aging warrior surrendered -- only to change his mind a few days later and flee into Mexico. At last on September 4, 1887, Geronimo surrendered to General Nelson Miles and with many of his warriors and their families was sent to imprisonment in Florida and Alabama. Although he lived until February 17, 1909, Geronimo never returned to his homeland in Arizona. He spent his last years dictating his autobiography and occasionally visiting fairs and other public exhibitions. He was the last of the great Apache war chiefs. Image Size: 15.25 x 13.5 in. Mark Schuler (American, B. 1951) "First Docking in Space 1966" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c First Docking in Space stamp issued November 24, 1989. On July 18, 1966, exactly 101 minutes apart, two rockets were launched flawlessly into space from Cape Kennedy, Florida. Timing was critical (a leeway of only 40 seconds could be allowed) because the two spacecraft were to attempt to rendezvous miles above Earth. The manned craft was Gemini 10, piloted by John Young and copiloted by Michael Collins. Their key objective was to dock Gemini 10 with the unmanned Agena spacecraft launched less than two hours earlier. It was important to the entire Gemini Project that the mission succeed; previous such flights had experienced disappointing failures in attempting to accomplish such a rendezvous. After 40 minutes of maneuvering, the Gemini 10 astronauts successfully docked their vehicle with its target. Young and Collins then proceeded to approach Gemini 8's derelict Agena, which had been left behind in an emergency. Collins reached the marooned craft with a 27-minute space walk. Loud cheers could be heard in Mission Control when the astronauts' spacecraft finally splashed down in the Atlantic, for Gemini 10 was the first mission to accomplish all of the objectives required for a lunar mission in the upcoming Apollo program: orbital rendezvous, docking, orbital maneuvering of the composite vehicle and controlled work during extra-vehicular activity. Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Sleigh Ride to Get Christmas Tree" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Season's Greetings stamp issued October 28, 1981. The magic of Christmas is a powerful magic indeed. "Miracles happen only to those who believe in them" says an old French proverb. At Christmastime people enjoy believing in miracles. The very atmosphere tingles with anticipation of wishes that might come true. At Christmas, man recaptures some of the lighthearted faith of childhood, when it was easy to believe in Teddy Bears riding sleighs, when it was even possible to hear (if one listened closely) the faint jingle of the sleigh bells in that endless night of waiting for Christmas Day to dawn. Now is the time when children reveal their impossible desires. Little girls are not afraid to ask for ponies, little boys dream of space ships that will really fly to the moon. Even sensible adults are caught up in the spirit of what-might-be. A vision of perfect happiness is part of the season, and they plunge willingly into all sorts of preparations and plans in order to give this priceless gift on Christmas Day. So the sense of excitement grows until Christmas morning dawns at last, making clear what all the preparation and waiting meant. The miracle had happened after all: it was the birth of Christ, which took place nearly 2,000 years ago, but still happens in the hearts of people every Christmas of every year! The delightful reproduction of a Teddy Bear on a Sleigh on the stamp featured on this First Day Cover was issued in Christmas Valley, Oregon, on October 28, 1981. Image Size: 14 x 11.75 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 14.75 in. Unframed. (B07414)
John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "The Toronto Locomotive" Signed lower right. Oil on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Toronto stamp issued March 10, 1983. Dodging the snorting locomotive's bursts of steam, crowds of passengers board the long line of cars. The conductor calls out a last warning to late arrivals ... and dense clouds of black, murky smoke belch out of the cone-shaped stack. The great engine begins its rhythmic pant and chugging motion, that gradually swell to a quickened roar. Beyond the town lies the open country, where, gathering speed, the locomotive comes alive with power. With a long trailing whistle, the steam engine signals the train's departure into the Canadian West. Such was the scene from an era long ago ... when the first Canadian-built steam locomotive -- the Toronto -- hauled passengers on the Ontario, Simcoe & Huron Union Railway. Built in 1853, by the James Good Foundry in Toronto, Ontario, the Toronto was a thirty ton, wood-fired steam engine. This historic engine began its career as a passenger locmotive, providing fast and comfortable transportation to people traveling across Canada. Eventually, the Toronto hauled freight as well as passengers. In 1881, the Northern Railway made an important gauge change which made the Toronto obsolete. Her operators felt it was more expedient to scrap the engine than to change its gauge. Image Size: 13.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 19.75 x 17.5 in. Unframed. (B08296)
