Lot 115

Ruyi sceptre; Liaoning, China, 19th century.Carved wood.Measurements: 37 cm long. This type of sceptre, whose name in Chinese means 'as you like', has two uses. The first is to serve as a donation to temples, as an ex-voto to request something from the gods. They were also placed in houses according to the rules of feng shuei, in order to receive help in obtaining wishes. Their origin and use in antiquity are not really known, although they became a very typical gift for the emperor and other authorities. The flat top shape represents the mushroom of immortality, identified with the lingzhi mushroom.

Lot 147

Lokapala; China, Tang dynasty, AD 617 - 907.Terracotta with Sancai glaze.Certificate of analysis by thermoluminescence enclosed.Measurements: 40 cm (height).Terracotta lokapala image decorated with Tang-era Sancai glaze (literally, 'three colours'): copper oxide green and iron honey-coloured, complemented by the ivory-coloured engobe of the base. The latter appears to be protected and highlighted by a colourless glaze, a common practice in Tang sancai. The lokapala, translated 'guardian of the place', are gods who rule the cardinal points in Hinduism and Vasraian Buddhism (Jingangcheng in Chinese). As guardians, they can call the spirits of the other world to their aid, which is why they are usually placed in pairs at the entrance to tombs. In the Hindu tradition they are also frequently depicted in temples. The Tang dynasty is considered by historians to be a time of splendour in Chinese civilisation, equal or even superior to the Han period. Emerging after a period of despotism under the cruel Yang Di, it was established by Li Shimin who, out of filial piety, put his father on the throne before assuming the role of emperor himself and founding the Tang dynasty. Stimulated by contact with India and the Middle East via the Silk Road, the Tang empire experienced a creative boom in many fields. Buddhism, which had emerged in India at the time of Confucius, continued to flourish during this period and was adopted by the imperial family, becoming an essential part of traditional Chinese culture. The development of the printing press also extended the dissemination of written works, giving rise to the golden age of Chinese art and literature. The great cultural opening will result in a fundamentally colourful, expressive and very eclectic art, although it is still mainly for funerary use, where the artist remains an anonymous craftsman. However, from this time onwards, high-fired ceramics, decorated with enamels, would come to be used as a status symbol, with typologies such as vessels for the table of the litterateur and all types of tableware. Terracotta, on the other hand, continued to be used for grave goods, although stoneware would also be used from now on, especially for the tombs of nobles and scholars. In funerary pieces, the group to which this piece belongs, an important new feature is introduced: tricolour lead glazes (sancai), although pieces decorated with engobes continue to be made. Among the grave goods there are six typological groups, each with a great variety: tomb guardians, with warriors and protective beasts; ceremonial figures with their servants; animals of all kinds, such as oxen, camels and horses; musicians and court ladies; utensils and vessels; and finally, architectural models. Three periods can also be distinguished. The first of these, between 581 and 683, is dominated by figures decorated with engobes, but not yet glazed, so that the piece presented here could be dated to between these years. The second period, between 683 and 779, is the great period of the Sancai, with a predominance of enamels. Finally, until the beginning of the 10th century, pieces with sancai enamels continued to be made, albeit of lower quality than those of the previous period.

Lot 149

Bodhisattva figure; China, 18th-19th century.Wood carved and polychromed in fine gold.Measurements: 55 x 30 x 15 cm.Sculpture carved in wood and polychromed in fixed gold representing the figure of Bodhisattva known in China as a symbol of universal virtue. In Mahayana Buddhism he is associated with the Buddhist practice of meditation and, together with Sakyamuni Buddha and the bodhisattva Manjusri, forms the Buddhist Trinity. As a bearer of compassion and help, his representations have become popular objects of devotion ("bakhti"), which, from an artistic point of view, favours the enrichment of the Buddhist pantheon, channelling it through his different representations. His iconography corresponds to that of an asexual and timeless being, with a tranquil appearance, adopting postures derived from dance, such as the triple flexion or "tribhanga" characteristic of the first Indian representations. They are usually richly adorned, in relatively active postures or also enthroned - as in the present case - and usually dressed as the princes of each artistic school and period, which adds great documentary value to them.In Buddhist iconography they play a role similar to that of the saints in Christianity, who, like them, wear the halo of sanctity, as well as the "usnîsa" between the eyebrows, like the figure of the Buddha*, differing from the latter in a more worldly treatment, reflected in the richness of their clothing and adornments, and by carrying attributes that identify him in their hands. In the Vajrayâna, his origin is derived from the five Dhyâni Buddhas and he represents all the male divinities of the Buddhist pantheon.

Lot 153

Altar of Reclining Buddha; Vietnam, Son La province, 18th century.Carved, lacquered and gilded wood, with carved and lacquered teakwood figure.Presented on a modern oak table.Measurements: 165 x 202 x 90 cm (temple); 40 x 131 x 40 cm (Buddha); 55 x 17 x 30 cm (lions). An exceptional altar in the form of a temple, from the Vietnamese province of Son La, in the northern interior of the country, near the border with Laos. Dating from the 18th century, it is a small temple in richly carved wood, lacquered in gilt and black on a red background, which houses a solid teak sculpture of Buddha in round form, accompanied by two guardian lions, also carved in wood in round form and gilded in gilt.Buddha is depicted in the posture known as Buddha Nirvana, which shows him lying down moments before he dies and transmigrates. This is a representation of the state in which Buddha leaves the earthly plane to attain Nirvana, a state in which he is liberated from suffering and the cycle of reincarnations, attaining Enlightenment, the supreme understanding.Although Chinese influence in Vietnam has been of great importance since ancient times, the country cannot be considered merely a satellite of this mighty empire, but has a culture that is genuinely its own, as evidenced by examples of the importance of the imperial city of Hue. Indeed, much of Vietnamese culture and history has been shaped by the struggle for identity and survival of a people made up of fifty-four ethnic groups against the superiority of China and other nearby peoples at first, and later against Western colonialism. In fact, the imposition of Chinese influence on the country was forcefully reaffirmed as recently as 1802, when the Vietnamese emperor sent his ambassadors to Beijing to announce the union of the old kingdom of An Nam with that of the Viet Thuong under the new name of Nam Viet. However, the Chinese court did not approve of the new name, but only allowed the permutation of the two syllables, to avoid confusion with the old kingdom of Nam Viet Dong, of which some Chinese provinces were part. The golden age of Vietnamese art was that of the Sham kingdoms (200-1720), although today it is a relatively little-studied civilisation. This is largely because the great achievements of Vietnamese culture are to be found not in the visual arts but in literature. Nevertheless, a brilliant art industry developed, albeit one deeply influenced by Chinese aesthetic, philosophical and religious ideas. However, some genuine artistic manifestations, such as water puppetry, were maintained, and Vietnamese phenomena such as Caodaism, a sect that originated in 1919, also emerged.

Hindu school. India, 19th century."Brahma".Hard stoneMarble pedestal. It has some chipping and slight flaws at the base of the figure.Measurements: 12 x 7,5 x 7,5 cm (figure); 2,5 x 7 x 7 x 7 cm (pedestal).Head carved in hard stone, representing the Hindu god Brahma. His four heads symbolise the four spirits that recite each of the four Vedas. His smiling, peaceful face exudes goodness and wisdom. In Hinduism, Brahma (literally "evolution" or "development" in Sanskrit) is the creator god of the universe and a member of the Trimurti, the triad consisting of himself (creator god), Vishnu (preserver god) and Shiva (destroyer god). There are several myths about the origin of the Trimurti, but the first myth is the one that supposes Brahma as the first being created by Brahman, and even as the first personification of this absolute deity, by whom everything was created. Thus, the three gods would be avatars of a single god, in his facets of creator, preserver and destroyer. Brahma is the husband of Sarasvati, the goddess of knowledge. However, being the Creator, all his children are born of his mind, and not of his body. Brahma intervenes only occasionally in the affairs of the gods, and rarely in those of mortals.

It is apparent when perusing the service file that no expense has been spared on this example with no less than 15 stamps in the owners manual/service book along with a sheaf of invoices including a bill for the desirable MK3 headlamp upgrade and the last purchase invoice in 2021 for £18695. Only for sale due to the purchase of a more family orientated classic. A real gem. Reg Number: S531 HGP

Lot 34

1980 BMW E12 M535i, this car has undergone a full professional restoration early in 2022 it has cover approximately 148,000 miles over its life but has spent the past 10 years doing very little. We have extensive photos of the restoration work undertaken with a pack of information detailing the works completed.   The M535i was the first M badged sports saloon and was the first true M road car, the E12 paved the way for now infamous M badge. The power unit was the rare 3.5 litre M90 straight 6 engine, the same engine used in the legendary M1 but with a 12 valve single overhead cam head instead of the 24v twin cam head, it had a shorter stroke and bigger bore which made it noticeably more rev happy than the 3.5 litre M30 engine that most people assume is under the bonnet.
