It was first published in 1630 and translated into English in 1632 by Edward Grimestone, who dedicated it to Richard Hubert, a courtier and Groom-Porter to Charles I. There were several 17th century editions, all of which are scarce; Library Hub lists one copy only dated 1639 (Wadham College, Oxford) but this has a different imprint.Faret (1596-1646) was one of the founder members of the Académie Française and the first occupant of seat number nine.

First naval novel.- [Davis (John)] The Post-Captain; or, The Wooden Walls well manned; comprehending a view of naval society and manners, first edition, wood-engraved vignette of a schooner to title, aquatint frontispiece (not called for), the odd instance of pencil marginalia, some staining and spotting, lightly browned, 20th century navy blue half calf, gilt spine in compartments with anchor motifs and a white leather label, little rubbed, [Sadleir 678], 8vo, Thomas Tegg, 1806.⁂ A rare copy of what may be considered the first English language naval novel. Chapter XX (beginning p.112) is 'The Story of Mr. Keith's Captivity among the American Indians'. Davis's practical knowledge had been gleaned from his time at sea, first on an East Indiaman, and then Sir Edmund Nagle's frigate Artois in 1794. He rose to the rank of acting lieutenant, leaving the Navy when the Artois was wrecked in 1797. Post-Captain was published immediately after Trafalgar.

De La Bruyère (Jean) The "Characters", translated by Henri Van Laun, number 72 of 300 copies, portrait frontispiece and 23 etchings by B. Damman and V. Foulquier, title in red & black, very occasional light finger-soiling, contemporary half morocco, spine gilt in compartments with red spine labels, extremities and joints rubbed, 8vo, 1885.⁂ The original contributions by La Bruyère are primarily observations on character and conduct, describing portraits of people and their failings - many were thinly disguised descriptions of living people. It was first translated into English in 1699 and is credited with greatly having influenced contemporary English essayists.
