A 1935 Singer 9 Le Mans Speed, registration number BYT 842, chassis number 62688, engine number 58220, Royal Blue. This near concours condition Singer 9 Le Mans Speed is presented in a beautifully restored condition. Being one of the first 60 cars built, it features suicide type doors, of these, less than a handful are known to exist in their original configuration. The Le Mans Speed model featured high lift harmonic cams, a counter balance crankshaft and an extra large capacity ribbed oil sump for greater cooling capacity. Additional drive chain modifications include the heavy duty clutch in a close ratio gearbox, with third gear reduced from 8.721 to 7.521. Body changes include additional external mounted 12 gallon slab fuel tank, fitted with a quick release fuel filler cap and twin rear mounted wheels to complete the competition look. The new look upswept scuttle cowls, also signalled that this car was a machine that meant business on and off the track. During the previous ownership of the last twenty four years, the car had resided in Lamberhurst, Kent, and prior to 1966, it had spent its entire life in Leicester. During the previous ownership, a full and comprehensive restoration was carried out. This included an engine rebuild by the Singer Workshop, steering box and gearbox rebuild, a full re-spray in the original colour of Royal Blue, re-wired and re-chromed by specialist Ashley Motors in Hampshire. Since completion of the restoration, the car has seen little use and comes with full weather equipment. This charming and rare pre-war sports car is presented in excellent condition, and with the most desirable specification, would be a great addition to any collection. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustrations

Lot 86

A 1973 Lotus Europa Special JPS, registration number JOL 924L, chassis number 73012037P, engine number R28876, JPS black. Colin Chapman's ultimate specification road going Europa was launched in September 1972. It featured the big valve head and five speed gearbox. The first 100 were painted in black JPS livery to commemorate the 1972 F1 Constructors World Championship where John Player Special were the official sponsors. Motor Magazine famously tested in period a Europa JPS achieving a top speed of 123 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 6.6 seconds, an impressive time now. This Europa has been in the current ownership since 1986, with four previous recorded keepers and believed 54,000 recorded miles. The Lotus was manufactured in January 1973 (invoice number 65484695) to be supplied by Aston Distributions, Birmingham to its first owner, a Mr D J Hoskinson and was registered HOH 9L. It had a change of registration to NCB 777 with its next owner, a Mr Norman Charles Bowers. The current registration of JOL 924L was issued with the next change of ownership and it has retained this number ever since. The vendor's husband acquired the Lotus on 17th May 1986 from a Mr Andrew David Haas of Dorchester. The vendor's husband would only use the Europa for a couple of years before storing it in a heated garage. To this end the Lotus will now require careful recommissioning before taking to the road. Information taken from the history file states it had an engine rebuild and general refurbishment before the vendor's husband purchased the car. Generally presented in good condition, the interior is still smart, with retrimmed seats, door cards and transmission tunnel in cream vinyl. The engine and running gear will now require recommissioning, the Lotus rolls freely and the paintwork still has a good shine, but there is some evidence of spider web and gel cracks in the paintwork. The history file contains a letter from Lotus Cars confirming the build history of the car, photocopies of DVLA records, past MOTs, SORNs and the original owner's handbooks. V5, no MOT See illustrations

SECOND WORLD WAR AVIATION - A SCRATCH-BUILT MODEL OF A BRISTOL BEAUFIGHTER on a '29' shaped base, with a engraved plate inscribed 'C.W. SALES 29 SQDN - WEST MALLING 1942', 18cm long. Note: 29th Squadron - In December 1938 the squadron received their first Blenheims and on the outbreak of war these were used for patrols over shipping and for early trials with airborne radar. When German night bombers began operating in strength in June 1940, No.29 became fully involved in night fighting, beginning to receive Beaufighters in November, though it was February 1941 before the Squadron was fully equipped. Its defensive role remained after conversion to Mosquitoes in May 1943, but in May 1944 intruder missions began to be flown which continued until February 1945. Conversion to Mosquito 30s followed, but few operations with these were flown before the end of the war. In October 1945 the Squadron moved to West Malling to become part of Britain's peace-time night-fighter force.

RUSSIA - A RARE AND ORIGINAL IMPERIAL RUSSIAN TELEGRAM, DATED 1914, FROM TZARINA ALEXANDRA, WIFE OF NICHOLAS II TO HER FRIEND AND LADY IN WAITING, PRINCESS MARIA BARIATINSKI 'Loving Thanks Dear Letter We Too Are Getting Anxious About Funds Here Daily More And More Things Are Needed As Have To Send Clothings To Regiments And All Is So Expensive Best Love To You Both = Alexandra', from the Imperial Telegram, Moscow, No.176, unusually the message is in English, perhaps for privacy, mounted, framed and glazed, 28cm x 20.5cm. Alexandra (Alix) of Hess-Darmstadt was born on June 8, 1872 in Darmstadt, Germany. Her parents were the Grand Duke and Duchess of Darmstadt; her mother was also the daughter of Queen Victoria. At the wedding of her sister Elizabeth (Ella) to their cousin Seril of Russia, Alix met for the first time the Tsarivitch Nicholas. They were married on November 26, 1894, shortly after the death of his father, and before 1901 had four daughters named Olga (1895-1918), Tatiana (1897-1918), Maria (1899-1918) and Anastasia (1901-1918). In 1917 Nicholas was forced to abdicate the throne of Russia. He and his family were then imprisoned in Siberia, and later moved to Ekaterinburg, where on the night of July 17, 1918 the royal family was massacred. In the 1990s the burial sites were investigated, although the bodies of the Tsarivitch Alexei and one of his sisters (it is unclear which one) were missing. Using DNA from HRH Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh (Alix was his great-aunt) proved that four of the bodies belonged to the Tsarina and three of her daughters. Provence: Purchased Sotheby's, 1971.

Lot 885

SECOND WORLD WAR - AN OAK COMMEMORATIVE CIGAR BOX SUBMARINE X2 the lid bearing a heavy 16.5cm brass relief profile of Italian Submarine 'Galileo Galilei', re-named 'X2', 22cm x 14cm x 9cm. Note: H.M. Submarine X2 was an Italian Archimede-class submarine, originally named Galileo Galilei. She served in the Regia Marina before and during World War II, before her capture by the Royal Navy in 1940. Galileo Galilei was stationed in the Red Sea in June 1940 as a unit of the Italian Red Sea Flotilla, and during a patrol, with Capitano di Corvetta Corrado Nardi in command, on 16 June 1940, she sank the Norwegian tanker James Stove approximately 12 miles south of Aden. On 18 June, the Galilei halted with cannon fire the Yugoslavian cargo ship Drava, but as Yugoslavia was not yet at war, she let it proceed, the attack was heard by the anti-submarine warfare trawler HMS Moonstone and at 4:30pm Moonstone sighted the periscope of Galileo Galilei and carried out an attack with two depth charges, though without damaging the submarine, the following day, after the British warship repeated its attack with depth charges, Nardi gave the order to surface and engaged the Moonstone with her guns. Right at the start of the action between the two vessels, the forward gun's sighting mechanism on the Galilei became unusable, the fast-moving Moonstone scored the first hit on the Italian boat after ten minutes, killing some men and wounding Nardi, the following hit killed the crew of the forward gun, including the First Officer, the submarine's gun jammed, and then another salvo from Moonstone killed all those on the conning tower including Nardi. Under the only officer left alive, though wounded, the young midshipman Mazzucchi, the Galilei continued the fight with the forward gun. However the British destroyer HMS Kandahar arrived, and Galilei surrendered. The submarine had lost 16 men; Nardi, four other officers, seven NCOs and four sailors. The submarine was then towed into Aden. Though the British side claimed that the submarine's codebooks and operational documents were captured intact by the Royal Navy, and revealed the exact position of other Italian naval units, Italian survivors (including Midshipman Mazzucchi) reported that every document was destroyed before surrender, and that no written operational orders were issued to Italian units, only an oral briefing between captains and the submarine command in Massawa before every mission After her capture, Galileo Galilei was berthed at Port Said and served as a generating station to charge the batteries of British submarines. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in June 1942 as HMS X2 and was scrapped on 1 January 1946.
