LINDBERGH CHARLES: (1902-1974) American Aviator who made the first solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, 20th-21st May 1927. Book signed and inscribed, a hardback edition of The Wartime Journals of Charles A. Lindbergh, First American edition published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Inc., New York, 1970. Signed in black fountain pen ink by Lindbergh to the title page, `To Dr. John K. Lattimer, with admiration and best wishes, Charles A. MITCHELL R. J.: (1895-1937) English Aeronautical Engineer, designer of the Supermarine Spitfire aircraft. Rare fountain pen ink signature (`R. J. Mitchell`) on a piece, with two additional typed words, on a piece neatly clipped from the conclusion of a letter. Neatly laid down to a page of an autograph album containing over 40 other signatures by a variety of famous individuals including Flinders Petrie, H. M. Bateman, Samuel Hoare, Frank Dicksee, W. R. GAGARIN YURI: (1934-1968) Russian Cosmonaut, the first man to travel in space, 1961. Vintage signed 4 x 6 photograph, an unusual image of the cosmonaut seated in a half length pose at his desk. Gagarin holds a pen in one hand as he works on some diagrams before him. Signed with his name alone in dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the head of the image. The image is a little grainy. GRISSOM VIRGIL: (1926-1967) American Astronaut, one of the original NASA Project Mercury astronauts. Grissom was the second American to fly in space and the first person to fly in space twice. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Grissom standing in a full length pose wearing his NASA spacesuit and helmet as he prepares to step into a US Navy training capsule. Signed in black ink across a light area at the centre of the image, `To Miss. McClure, Virgil I. Grissom`. Together with a similar unsigned photograph of Wally Schirra. Accompanied by an A.L.S. by Dr. Randall M. Chambers, one page, 8vo, Philadelphia, 29th September 1962, to Miss. Gladys McClure, forwarding the two photographs and adding that one has been signed. Also included is the original envelope from Chambers. Rare. Some very slight silvering to the images, extremely light surface creasing and two small pinholes to the upper edges of the photographs. ARMSTRONG NEIL: (1930- ) American Astronaut, Commander of Apollo XI (1969). The first man to walk on the moon. Signed and inscribed colour 8 x 10 photograph, the original NASA image depicting Armstrong standing in a three quarter length pose wearing his white spacesuit. A large image of the moon appears in the background. Signed across a light area of the image, `To Mac & Ace, with warm regards, Neil Armstrong, Apollo 11`. The signature and inscription are slightly faded, although remain perfectly legible. Together with an A.L.S., Viola L. Armstrong (Mrs. Stephen K. Armstrong)` by Armstrong`s mother, two pages, 8vo, 912 Neil Armstrong Drive, Wapakoneta, Ohio, 10th October 1971, to Mrs. McKee, thanking her for her telephone call and letter and continuing `I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the very beautiful bronze medal. I shall cherish it as long as I am permitted to live. Now I shall turn your letter with your request over to Neil, and I hope that you will receive it before long. The next time I see him I shall give it to him.` In a postscript she also remarks `I shall mail your generous gift to the Neil Armstrong museum…` Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Armstrong. Also including the original invoice from Presidential Art Medals Inc., made to Maxine McKee for the supply of a bronze Apollo 11 medal at a total cost of $5.20. McKee has annotated the invoice in her hand, in part, `Sent bronze medal to Neil Armstrong`s mother, after telecon with her….It was sent cert. return receipt`, accompanied by the original US Postal Service receipt referred to by McKee, the printed oblong 12mo document boldly signed by Neil Armstrong`s father, Stephen K. Armstrong. The lot also includes an Apollo 11 mission patch. An unusual and rare grouping of signatures. G to VG, 5
SCARLETT JAMES YORKE: (1799-1871) British General, a hero of the Crimean War. Scarlett led the charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaclava. A.L.S., J. Yorke Scarlett, with rank beneath, three pages, 8vo, Crimea, 26th September 1855, to Sir Hew Ross. Scarlett announces `I am very anxious to submit to your notice the name of First Lieutenant Frederick Lyon of the Royal Artillery as a candidate for the Horse Artillery knowing him to be a clever & splendid young man & one who would I think be a credit to that beautiful branch of your service.` The General continues `You will be happy to hear that the Horse Artillery attached (to) our Cavalry are looking very well & do us great credit though we have not had an opportunity of bringing them into action this summer except a few shots fired by the C Troop on the 16th at the enemy.` Scarlett continues to refer to other military matters and in concluding confesses to being jealous of a Troop of Horse Artillery being attached to the Infantry, `but I concluded the arrangement is all for the best & good of the service`. A letter of fine content. Attractively and professionally matted in deep red alongside a brief printed biography and an oval engraving of Captain Nolan. Framed and glazed (to both sides to show each page of the letter) in a silver coloured frame to an overall size of 15 x 17.5. CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. Fine Wartime T.L.S., Winston S. Churchill, one page, 4to, The Casey Villa, Cairo, 5th December 1943, to King Peter II of Yugoslavia, on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister. Churchill thanks the King for his good wishes on the occasion of his birthday and continues `I am much indebted to Your Majesty for sending me the fine symbolic present which accompanied your letter. This gave me great pleasure and I am delighted to accept it. Would Your Majesty please convey to Monsieur Svetozar Puric my congratulations upon the work which he has produced.` In concluding the Prime Minister states `Your Majesty will, I am sure, have understood how pressed I have been during the present Conferences. Nevertheless, I hope that before I leave we may have an opportunity of meeting again`. Accompanied by a typed draft of the King`s original letter to Churchill, in part, `As a souvenir of your Birthda ...which you are going to celebrate during one of the most memorable conferences in our history, I would wish you to accept a handiwork of a Yugoslav....setting out, in all simplicity but not without technical skill, to symbolize the gallantry of those few to whom so much was owned (sic) by so many, and who have in these last days given the world a new brilliant instance of their prowess.` A letter of good content and excellent association. One small file hole to the upper left corner, not affecting the text or signature. VG King Peter II (1923-1970) King of Yugoslavia 1934-45. Churchill celebrated his 69th birthday on 30th November 1943 and wrote this letter shortly after the Tehran Conference, a meeting of Joseph Stalin , Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill between 28th November and 1st December 1943, most of which was held at the Soviet Embassy in Tehran, Iran. It was the first World War II conference amongst the Big Three Allies in which Stalin was present. It almost immediately followed the Cairo Conference (22nd-26th November 1943) and was followed by the Yalta Conference (4th-11th February 1945) and the Potsdam Conference (17th July-2nd August 1945). The central aim of the Tehran conference was to plan the final strategy for the war against Nazi Germany and its allies, and the chief discussion was centered on the opening of a second front in Western Europe.
HIMMLER HEINRICH: (1900-1945) German Reichsfuhrer of the SS, a leading member of the Nazi Party. T.L.S., H. Himmler, one page, 4to, Berlin, 8th March 1940, to SS Gruppenfuhrer Schmitt, in German, with a typed heading in red, `This letter is intended only for SS Gruppenfuhrer Schmitt personally`. Himmler states that he has been made aware of a report from SS-Brigadefuhrer Cummerow dated 22nd February 1940 with a proposal to make SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Malle and Collani Battalion Commanders and Majors, and remarks `I can not help being under the impression that Mr. Collani has now succeeded in fooling SS-Brigadefuhrer Cummerow as well.` Himmler continues `I am expressly determined that Collani will be nominated for one of the next positions as Company Commander that becomes free in the regiments "The Fuhrer", "Germany" or "Germania". When Mr. Collani has led a company for a long time successfully and bravely, then, with further intelligence, it will be possible to give full consideration to the proposal of a promotion. However, first I want a detailed character assessment of him with a regiment.` He further remarks `I most definitely do not consider Malle competent for the position of a Battalion Commander. I request notification of where he is serving at present and for what he will be recommended` and in concluding states `The further comments on the active leaders of the Waffen-SS compared to the Reserve leaders have not impressed me at all.` Two file holes to the left edge, and a couple of slight paperclip rust stains, not affecting the text or signature. About VG Hans Collani (1908-1944) SS-Standartenfuhrer, Knight`s Cross winner. Before World War II Collani served as Sepp Dietrich`s adjutant in the Bodyguard Regiment. From 1941 he was the Commander of the renowned Finnish SS-Battalion.
[HITLER ADOLF]: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. A brass sconce electric light fixture, featuring a fluted bowl, apparently removed from the wall of Adolf Hitler`s office in the Reich Chancellery in Berlin. Accompanied by a copy of a letter of provenance by David Harris Engel, stating that he removed the light fixture in June 1945 and was `one of the first American officers to enter Berlin during that period, while on duty at the Potsdam Conference in the summer of 1945`. Also included is an original letter of provenance signed by Charles Hamilton, dated 26th June 1995, stating that he obtained the light fixture directly from the World War II veteran David Engel. WILDE JIMMY: (1892-1969) Welsh Boxer, the first official World Flyweight Champion. Vintage signed postcard photograph depicting the boxer standing in a three quarter length boxing pose wearing his Lonsdale belt. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink to a light area of the image and dated 1947 in his hand. A slight smudge appears to the final figure of the date. Together with a vintage signed postcard photograph and one slightly larger by the boxers Jack Hood (signed to recto and verso) and Peter Kane, the images showing them both in full length boxing poses. MANCHESTER UNITED: An official printed 8vo United Review programme for Manchester United v. Atletico De Bilbao at Maine Road, 6th February 1957, European Cup Quarter Final, Second Leg, individually signed to the front cover image (showing action from the First Leg) by eleven members of the Manchester United team, Bill Foulkes, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Mark Jones, Duncan Edwards, Johnny Berry, Tommy Taylor, Dennis Viollet, David Pegg, Wilf McGuinness and Geoff Bent. Each of the signatures are to clear areas and the majority are in bold blue fountain pen ink. Rare. A light central vertical folds runs through the programme, about VG After trailing 5-3 from the first leg, Manchester United won the second leg 3-0, taking the tie to 6-5 on aggregate. They lost 5-3 on aggregate to Real Madrid in the semi-final, the Spanish team going on to win the European Cup in it`s second season, having also won the trophy in the first season. Dennis Viollet was the competition`s highest scorer with nine goals. Exactly a year to the date after this match, the tragic Munich Air disaster took place, which resulted in the deaths of a number of the Busby Babes, including seven who signed this programme-Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, David Pegg and Tommy Taylor. Survivors of the crash included Johnny Berry, Bill Foulkes and Dennis Viollet.

A very rare 18c boxwood scale rule by JOHN LORENZ Leeds, 18" x 3" wide with brass tips, the rule is calibrated on both sides with 22 scales, numbered 3 to 24 in the L/H column to denote graduations to the inch. The late Richard Knight explained that to use a scale the first two graduations must be ignored, the reason for this is obscure. Lorenz was known to have produced brass sextants and the curator of the Leeds Museum suggests he worked before 1790, the rule is in exceptional condition F

From 1797 to 1800 he taught modelling to the daughters of George III and was subsequently Sculptor-in-Ordinary to the Royal Family. The three copies at auction in the last 35 years have all been imperfect the worst lacking at least 100 leaves the best 16.

Pratt (Anne) Flowering Plants Grasses Sedges of publisher`s file copy with a note Mr Britten`s Revised Manuscript of Volume 1 with Mrs Peerless` (nee Pratt) Report on the Plates inserted in 3 binding cases (1 2 and 4) the first with dust-jacket (very rare) 8vo 1899-1905.*** Extensive and very interesting alterations both by Britten and by Pratt in the event the editing of this new edition was given to Edward Step and Britten`s alterations seem not to have been used. John Britten was later to write Pratt`s obituary (J. Bot. 1894). A number of letters are inserted and a pencil sketch of the title-page. (3)

Most of the family library from Wentworth Woodhouse was sold by Sothebys in 1948 though this book was not in the sale. “a great buyer of books espcially between about 1707 and 1713 when he was at St. John`s College. LXXXIII ff. 23a-31b; the brothers Henry and James Thynne were Charles II`s librarians) endorsed Catalogue of Bookes belonging to the King`s Library at St. James`s in the hands of Mr. Merne...” Nixon English Restoration Bindiings p. 12.
