Paul Henry (1876-1958) A Western Landscape. Oil on board Signed lower right 35.5cm x 40.5cm. Provenance: Bears label verso for The Medici Society 63 Bold Street. Liverpool. The vendors' parents were given this picture as a wedding present in 1938. still 'wet'. It is not clear whether it was given by the artist or the Irish artist Estella Francis Solomons (1882-1968) who was the aunt of the bride Dorothy Solomons. The composition bears a striking resemblance to 'Cottages West of Ireland' sold Sotheby's Irish Sale May 13th 2005 Lot 74. There is no record of this picture having been exhibited or shown in public by the artist however this would be consistent with the gift to the vendors' parents whilst still 'wet'. This is a fine example of Henry's late work. In the early and mid 1930s after a difficult period of domestic problems he visited County Kerry for the first time and just as his mood had brightened so too did his palette and his brushwork grow more fluid in manner. These developments can be seen inthis composition which was almost certainly done from sketches made earlier. It is impossible however to say where the scene may have been. By the late thirties such scenes from Henry's hand had become veritable icons of the Irish landscape and were illustrated in. posters and other publications and widely distributed to tourist bureaux in Europe and the United States. There is a label of the Medici Society 63 Bold Street Liverpool on the reverse of this work which suggests that it may have been considered for illustration but there is no record of it. A Western Landscape is numbered 1076 in S. B. Kennedy's forthcoming oeuvre catalogue of Henry's illustrations drawings and paintings
