Wilde (Oscar) Salome first edition in English one of 500 copies title and 13 plates/illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley one loose 16pp. advertisements at end offsetting to pages p.6/7 original cloth gilt spine slightly faded extremities slightly rubbed [Mason 350] 8vo London & Boston 1894. ***When Aubrey Beardsley read Oscar Wilde`s Salome in French he spontaneously drew a picture of Salome holding John the Baptist`s head. This appeared in the first issue of The Studio and based on that drawing John Lane commissioned Beardsley to illustrate the first English edition. The translation is by Lord Alfred Douglas the dedicatee of the book.

.- Turnbull (Larry) A series of nine scrapbooks de compiled by Larry Turnbull containing numerous cuttings from periodicals and newspapers and a lighting plot for Tenting Circus 1948 signed with initials by Cyril Bertram Mills some vol. with tickets for performances in London and the provinces pasted inside covers original bindings 4to and large folio 1936-1983. *** The cuttings provide a wealth of information about the circus and its performers over a period of neary fifty years from various magazines and both London and provincial newspapers. Larry Turnbull worked for Bertram Mills as foreman-electrician. Included with the scrapbooks are two reel to reel recordings of Bertam Mills in the first of the BBC “Showmen of England” programmes broadcast in March 1938 the boxes annotated by Cyril Bertram Mills.

He is best remembered for originating and producing all the entertainments at Talk of the Town which opened in 1958.
Boxed Magic Sets.- Maskelyne`s Mysteries three sets one containing wand and 30 tricks in two drawers; one containing 15 tricks the pictorial label on lid with Gamages` address; and one containing 8 tricks original card boxes pictorial labels on lids the first two with instructions inside lids others loose the last with instructions on one sheet various sizes *** All three boxes are apparently complete and in excellent condition.(3)

The Indian Mutiny 1857-1859. Collection of letters and telegraph messages to and from British officers, largely formed by John Minshull Drake (1807-1861), Lieutenant Colonel of the 65th Native Infantry. They relate events and orders from the commanding officers, including news of deaths of European officers, disarming and state of native troops, reinforcements, and numbers of insurgents Drake took over command at Sealkote on the death of Brigadier Frederick Brind in July 1857, and some of the letters are written to Brind in that year, and include a 6pp fair copy report by Brind at Ferozepore, to Colonel Chester dated May 1857. The lot also includes Drake`s parchment commission appointing him Captain in the East Indies Army, copies of printed news - `The Mofussilite` and `Supplement to the Agra Messenger`, and press cuttings. One letter of note is written by Lord Lawrence to Brind, dated 23 May 1857 `...If late events do not open the eyes of our Rulers, nothing will do so...`; other letters tell of the disaffection of the native troops. Telegraph messages include: 12 May 1857 `...Native Troops in open Mutiny. Cantonments Burnt. Several European Officers Killed`; another for 15 May 1857, from Naylor `ordering all firing for drill or target practice purposes be, by native troops, suspended`; another `Officers Commanding Native Corps are instantly to inform their men that it has never been intended that cartridges which can be objectionable should be used by them...`; also included are other items, i.e. `General Orders 6 January 1849`, and an 1860 Testimonial from Gowan to Drake at Barrackpore, with franked envelope, etc; altogether a most interesting collection giving a first hand account of events from a British perspective Provenance:By family descent
Noel M F Corbett, R N (born 1887) Two Midshipman`s Naval Logs, compiled from 1904 to 1906, whilst serving aboard HMS Terrible, Leviathan, Ocean, Goliath and Hibernia, all in a neat hand with many good and detailed illustrations and charts in pen, ink and watercolour. The first log records voyages to foreign ports including Singapore, Ceylon, Hong Kong and the China Station; the second log mainly records voyages in British waters. Corbett has inserted many good sectional diagrams of the ships, armaments and technical equipment. Corbett was a published poet, and also included is his note book with his draft verses, showing corrections and changes. Poems include `The Old Cruiser`, `Stokers`, `Convoy`, and `To a Plum Duff`. Noel Corbett eventually rose to the rank of Captain, having been awarded the Sea Gallantry Medal in 1911 for rescuing a seaman washed overboard from the foundering SS Delhi. In 1927 Corbett was part of a Government panel at a conference at the Admiralty on Irish Free State Coastal Defence. The lot also includes another note book in poor condition, and a copy of his Poems `A Naval Motley` published in 1916. The Logbooks are in need of some repair to the bindings
