Punch. Punch or the London Charivari, vol. 1, July to December 1841, wood eng. illusts. throughout, some closed tears and crude sellotape repairs to first few leaves, some spotting throughout and some leaves sprung, a.e.g., orig. pimpled cloth gilt, worn, 4to. Laid in the front of the volume is an albumen print [by London Stereoscopic Company, 11th May 1867], of the Green Room, group portrait of thirteen sitters including Sir Arthur Sullivan, Sir John Tenniel, Ellen Terry, George Du Maurier, Mark Lemon (editor of Punch), Quintin Twiss and others, approx. 17 x 23 cm with arched top. On the following blank endpapers are a presentation inscription from the proprietors of Punch, 'presented to John Knowles Esq. on the occasion of the amateur performance in Manchester in aid of the "Bennett Fund", 29th July 1867', signed by W. H. Bradbury, F. W. Evans, and William, Thomas and J. Agnew. On the facing leaf underneath a small ink sketch of Mr. Punch and his dog [by John Tenniel?] are twenty signatures of those involved including Mark Lemon, Tom Taylor, John Tenniel, Henry Silver, F. C. Burnand, Arthur S. Sullivan, Charles S. Keene, Kate Terry and others. Another copy of the photograph is held by the National Portrait Gallery. (1)
