A SET OF FOURTEEN REGENCY MAHOGANY AND BRASS STRUNG DINING CHAIRS CIRCA 1815 Of klismos form each 86cm high, 48cm wide, 53cm deep Condition Report: There are marks, scratches, chips, splits, knocks and abrasions consistent with age and use.Overall the chairs are cleaned.The drop in seats are of unusual design as the front of the seat slots over the front rail.The armchairs have blocks to the inside of the seat rails, the side chairs have metal right-angled braces to the inside corners of the seat rails.Some of the brass stringing is slightly raised from the mahogany.There are some sections of replacement and repairs including repairs to the crest rails where they have been detached, some with dowels, filler and other repairs including to the legs.Please note we have not inspected the frame beneath the upholstery and can't comment on the condition and originality of this area.The upholstery is generally intact with a couple of holes to the fabric of one seat cover, the fabric is marked and stained.There is some fading to the wood, some of the touching up staining from restoration has not faded whilst the wood around it has faded.Please refer to the additional images for a visual reference of condition. A REGENCY OAK X-FRAMED STOOLATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, CIRCA 1815The underlying seat rail stamped 'HH' twice by the Gillows workman 42cm high, the seat approximately 55 x 42cmThe stamped initials 'HH' to this stool is one of the most common initial stamps recorded on chairs and stools made by Gillows in the first half of the 19th century. In Stuart's book it is explained with known examples that the stamp may belong to Henry Howard, however that Henry Holmes might be a better candidate as he was a known Gillows journeyman. (Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster & London, Antique Collectors Club, 2008, vol.II, page 244).For a pair of stools stamped 'GILLOWS' and of closely related form to the one shown here, see Susan E. A QUEEN ANNE WALNUT AND UPHOLSTERED ELBOW CHAIR CIRCA 1710 109cm high, 63cm wide, 61cm deep overallPlease note: this chair may possibly be a little later in date than originally catalogued and date to circa 1720-30.Condition Report: There are marks, scratches, chips, splits and abrasions consistent with age and use. some old repairs. The chair is of solid structure overall. There is some minor movement to joints as expected for age. The seat rails appear original and there are later re-inforcing shaped sections of oak applied to the underside of the main rails. The rear rail has a relatively modern section of pine glued and screwed to it to strengthen/ secure. The legs appear to have had a thin later layer of varnish applied to them previously. The legs all appear original and without breaks or splicing. Some old worm damage in areas throughout as expected for age. See additional images. The upholstery is later. There is some wear, fading. A SET OF FOURTEEN REGENCY SIMULATED ROSEWOOD AND BRASS INLAID DINING CHAIRSCIRCA 1815To include a pair of armchairs, each chair with bar back and horizontal splat with central tablet, above a drop-in seat and sabre legseach 82cm high, 45cm wide, 50cm deep overallCondition Report: There are marks, scratches, chips, splits, cracks, knocks and abrasions consistent with age and use. Some old chips and splits. some old repairs.More noticeable and concentrated marks and scratching reveal the pale coloured surface beneath. Sympathetic re-colouring could improve the appearance of this significantly. Surface varnish simulating the grain of rosewood may have been re-applied in atleast some areas/ to some chairs. The treatment/ handling of the simulation varies between some chairs but this is not immediately detectabel and may add to the visual interest of them. All elements of brass marquetry and stringing appear to be present except for a small element of stringing to one chair where an area of the brass to the cresting rail has been cellotaped down due to lifting. In very few areas some of the brass is lifting and needs to be re-secured. (see images) Some other areas of some chairs have been affected by tape being applied to them. Simple and sympathetic surface restoration should resolve this where visible. A section of one side of a cresting rail has previously been broken off and repaired some time ago. (See image) All seat rails appear to be original, there are no obvious breaks or splicing to legs. All padded drop in seats have a caned seat panel beneath them. The caning varies in age, some looks to be 19th century, some 20th century. Very few of the caned panels appear to have minor faults (breaks to some strands etc) . The upholstery to the seat pads is generally in very good clean condition. Movement to the join between one rear leg and seat rail with a section of loss adjacent to the join. Two later supporting blocks to the underside. Some filler to the join between one upright and the top rail. Chair two- Minor loss to caning at one side of the back. Neatly repaired split through one of the side uprights of the back. Old split through top rail adjacent to where it joins with the upright at one side. Later metal bracing supporting the join between one rear leg and the seat rail. Later batons of timber applied to the back of the front seat rail. Old glued split running down one rear leg. Some old chips splits and cracks. some old repairs and some small old losses. The leather is a later replacement and in good order overall. There are no holes or tears. Some marks to the exterior side of the chair. The interior side, where the seat is looks new and clean. No old breaks to legs. The foot of one rear leg with an old loss (see image) The foot of the other rear leg with a spliced section of repair (see image)The timber elements securing the casters to the front legs appears previously to have been cut off and is now replaced with an alternate section of timber. The castors have then been re-attached with later associated screws of which several could be better fitted. The casters themselves appear original. They have been polished. One caster is slightly out of position and the fitting of it could be improved. A GEORGE I WALNUT AND UPHOLSTERED WING ARMCHAIR CIRCA 1725 119cm high, 80cm wide, 67cm deep Condition Report: There are marks, scratches, chips, splits and abrasions consistent with age and use. Various old repairs. Some incorporating wax filler and/ or old nails. The chair is generally of solid structure overall. There is some minor movement to joints as expected for age. Some old worm damage in areas throughout as expected for age, particularly to the seat rails. Some has resulted in small fragmentary losses. The underlying seat rails are all original. There are some old cracks/ splits to the seat rails. The old crack to one side rail being the most obvious/ significant. We cannot guarantee the originality of the frame underlying the remainder of the upholstery. There are old forged iron metal brackets that are screwed in at the top of the two front legs to support. One front foot with spliced elements. (see images) The two 'ear' brackets to the top of one front leg are old replacements in beech (see images) Some ear brackets have been later re-secured with nails or screws to secure. An Irish late 19th Century mahogany framed two seater Couch, probably by Butler of Dublin, the padded back and cushioned seat and scroll arms covered in attractive red floral fabric, above a gadroon and C scroll frieze, raised on double bird or eagle head shell carved cabriole legs, with ball n' claw feet, approx. 62" (158cms) wide. Jonathan Swift's Chairÿÿ An early 18th Century walnut high back Open Armchair, the square and plain velvet covered back over similarly upholstered seat, with carved "S" scroll arms on barley twist supports on front turned legs united by barley twist stretchers. (1) * By strong family tradition at Howth Castle, reputed to be used by Jonathan Swift on his regular visits to the Castle. Identified as such and depicted in "Howth and its Owners," by Francis Elrington Ball, Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland 1917.
An 18th Century Gainsborough type Library Armchair, possibly Irish, with padded back, elbow rest and seat, covered in green floral fabric, the splayed arm fronts carved with acanthus leaves and shell decoration, on front leaf carved cabriole legs, terminating in scaled ball n' claw front legs, and outsplayed pad back feet. The Queen's Visit to Howth Castle An important pair of 18th Century gilt Side Chairs, attributed to John Trotter (1730 - 1799), each with a carved cartouche shaped back with flower head crest, issuing leaf sprays and "C" scrolls, around a padded centre, and a conforming serpentine covered seat, raised on front shell capped moulded cabriole legs, with scroll feet and conforming legs to the rear with castors. (2) History:ÿ These chairs were used by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on the occasion of their Howth Castle Visit, 2nd September 1853, and also used by the Duke & Duchess of York (later King George & Queen Mary) during their visit to the Castle on 22nd August 1897. * The pair are similar to the Chairs commissioned for Emily Countess of Kildare for Leinster House.
