GONCOURT EDMOND DE: (1822-1896), French Writer, Literary Critic, Art Critic, Book Publisher and the founder of the Académie Goncourt. A.L.S., Edmond de Goncourt, two pages, 8vo, Paris, 16th August 1892, to a Gentleman, in French. De Goncourt in by way of a clarification asks his correspondent 'A year ago you were kind enough to tell one of my friends that you were disposed to send me the play by la Guimard, played at Pantriv [?] and at the Chaussee d'Antin, you even set Sunday morning as the time when it was possible to receive me. Today, now that my study on la Guimard is ready to be finished, I am writing to ask if you are still kindly disposed towards me and if I could, one Sunday morning, come and see this interesting document that you possess.' Slight age wear, with three very minor tears to the left edge, otherwise GMarie-Madeleine Guimard (1743-1816) French Ballerina. She made her reputation as a dancer at the Opéra, where she earned 600 livres a year. Guimard lived on the Chaussee d'Antin in a building dubbed the "temple of Terpsichore crowned by Apollo", a reference to Guimard. The building had a 500-seat theater which rivalled the Opéra. Later in life Guimard raffled off her home, selling 2,500 tickets at 120 livres each.Goncourts' study was published as 'La Guimard: d'après les registres des menus-plaisirs, de la bibliothèque de l'Opéra, etc' (Paris, 1893), in which he writes 'when d'Alembert was asked why dancers like La Guimard made such prodigious fortunes, when singers did not, he responded, "It is a necessary consequence of the laws of motion".

T.L.S., Zeng hui Lee, two pages, folio, Taiwan, 3rd September 1996, to the Honorable Paul Simon, on official stationery of the President of the Republic of China. Lee wishes his correspondent a happy retired life, thanking him for his 'long-standing staunch friendship for the Republic of China.' Continuing 'Throughout your long years of service, you have rendered us strong and steadfast support in many ways. You call for an ROC seat in the U.N. and other international organization's, you speak highly of our democratization, and you call for peace across the Taiwan Straits.' Concluding 'I am impressed by your family's enduring association with the Chinese people and the efforts you have made on behalf of the interests of the Chinese-American community. You have won admiration for your championing the cause of peace and security in East Asia.' VGPaul Martin Simon (1928-2003) American Politician, supporter of Taiwan and opposed United States policy to isolate Taiwan. He helped convince President Clinton to allow Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui to visit the United States. His father was a Lutheran minister and missionary to China.
