Property of a Scottish Family A fine pair of 'cockpen' armchairs George III circa 1770 Scottish mahogany and with later seat fabric together with another mahogany cockpen armchair and laburnum example with needlework upholstery (4) For similar examples see Important English Furniture Sotheby's London 23 November 2005 lot 67. Various suggestions have been offered as to the origin of the characteristically Scottish 'cockpen' chair. The most widely accepted of these relates to the village of Cockpen Midlothian part of the Dalhousie Estate. The family pew of the Earls and Marquesses in Cockpen church formerly contained examples of this form of chair. A derivation of the 'Chinese Chippendale' style the cockpen chair thrived in Scotland during the second half of the 18th century. However the term appears never to have been used during this period either in accounts or inventories (c.f. Sebastian Pryke Cockpen Quest) Country Life 29 April 1993 pp.80-81).
