A fine pair of Chinese `Official`s Hat` yoke back arm chairs probably 18th century, from Shanxi province, constructed from Yumu (northern elm) wood, the bold swept yoke top rails over broad curved splat backs, the original rattan seats within moulded seat rails and shaped outswept arms on twin swept supports, raised on turned legs with low front foot rail and twin side stretchers, 43½in. (110.5cm.) high, 27¼in. (69cm.) wide. (2) See Illustration.
A 19th century copy of Dr. Samuel Johnson`s George III armchair the arched back, outswept arms and seat in buttoned red leather, raised on carved cabriole supports with square toed feet, 39½in. (100cm.) high, the top of the back with a white lettered plaque which reads, `This chair is an exact reproduction of that used from day to day by Dr. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) at the Anchor Brewery of Barclay and Perkins. The original chair is still in use in the company`s boardroom`. See Illustration.
