David Munro Kirkness of Kirkwall, a lady's Orkney chair, circa 1925; apparently made of oak from St Magnus' Cathedral, with tied straw tub back, the arms with scroll carved terminals, above a cord rush and pine drop in seat; on straight legs with peripheral stretchers; 84cm.high, 54cm wideNote: St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall, Orkney, was founded in the 12th century and extended in the 16th by the Bishop Reid. A hand-written note pertaining to be by Kirkness himself reads ''This Orkney chair was made in DM Kirkness workshop, Palace Rd, Kirkwall from Old Oak taken from St Magnus Cathedral when the church was repaired between the years 1912 & 1920. D.M Kirkness 10th May 1925".Kirkness's workshop was immediately adjacent to the Cathedral. Another example with a hand-written label relating the timber to the 16th century is held in the Orkney Museum collection, with that label dated 1901. Kirkness revived interest in Scottish vernacular craft and his Orkney chairs soon gained popularity leading London retailers such as Liberty.
