Leicht ber. & best., H. 80 cm (mit Lehne)Children's chair, late 19th century, ebonized softwood, ornamentally carved, in the backrest a stag in a clearing. Seat is woven. Four Lloyd Loom style green painted wicker tub chairs, a similar occasional table, and a poker work two tier book trough (6). The chair with the drop in seat has original finish. The other four pieces later painted and one chair with stable splits in the seat. Boker work book trough in good order.
An early 20th century (in late 18th century style) carved and rattan-cane upholstered bergère chair having acanthus terminals to the arms and the bow-fronted rail decorated with a running guilloche, raised on turned tapering fluted legsOverall the chair has a fairly good aged look about it; the rattan caning seems to be in good overall condition, there is a little bit away at the top of the right-hand arm near the arm rest looking at it from the front; the seat appears to be OK, would benefit from a squab cushion; the scrolling arm terminals are carved as acanthus and the paint has been worn away through usage; the arm rests are horse hair with what looks like a very worn material outer; scratches and scuffing mostly to the bottom of the legs commensurate with age, more scratches to the paintwork on the bow-fronted front rail; on the top rail to the left and to the right you can see the wooden uprights separating the rattan cane over time, these have opened slightly and are not construed as breaks but original construction; further discolouration and scratching etc. to the back of the wooden chair; legs look good overall with no major problems, no historic or later woodworm noted
An 18th century style gentleman's mahogany salon chair of large and comfortable proportions (probably 19th century); the foliate carved top rail above a pierced splat, stuff-over seat and raised on front cabriole legs carved at the knees with acanthus and terminating in further foliate-style carving
A harlequin set of five Hepplewhite-style mahogany dining chairs comprising one carver and four other chairs, two with Prince of Wales carved fleur de lys and one with Gothic tracery etc. (one chair needing restoration to the back, other chairs also restoration) together loose seat cover material (45cm floor to seat) (5)
A good early to mid-19th century Windsor armchair; yew-wood bow and supports, pierced splat, shaped elm seat and unusual turned legs united by a crinoline stretcher (130cm floor to top edge x 44cm floor to seat x 54cm arm to arm)The chair has come privately and appears to be in good general overall condition; the splat is good; the patination and colour looks good on the yew-wood bow and the elm seat; the uprights on the back appear good with no major breakage or restoration; there is some wear to the front of the arm terminals as expected with age; the back is slightly out of shape but nothing you would notice unless looked at from the top; looking at the two back legs -- both of them have sustained vertical splits from the top where they join into the seat -- probably about 1ft long and are visible from the back of the legs -- in the auctioneer's view this could be addressed fairly reasonably by a good restorer; the front left-hand leg has a small 2-inch split to the top and the right-hand leg looks generally OK with small split to the very bottom of the leg; the crinoline stretcher looks reasonable, it is noted that it is of a very good colour; the front left-hand leg has 4/5-inch split to the middle area, it is noted on turning the chair up that the splits are occurring in the front legs where the U-shaped crinoline stretcher attaches to them; maybe 10-15 historic worm holes to the back of the seat and underside and one or two plugs and old restoration at the back of the yew-wood bow, so the chair is not without fault but in the auctioneer's opinion would benefit from good, sympathetic restoration
Two mid-19th century Windsor chairs for restoration; one comb-back example with shaped splat the other with pierced splat, both with shaped elm seats and turned legs united by H-form stretchersBoth of these chairs look like they have been in an acid tank and stripped of their original colour and patination; there is historic woodworm; the slightly larger of the Windsor chairs has a 2-inch split on the side of the seat; there are other similar splits to the bottoms of the legs, lots of scratches and scuffing and colour discolouration to this chair; the smaller chair is in similar condition and there is a plug to the right arm looking at it from the front where the support holds up the arm; the chairs are in need complete restoration
A good and unusual carved walnut and upholstered button-back open armchair from third quarter 19th century; the top rail surmounted with an anthemion motif above an oval stuffover back and seat raised on turned tapering fluted legs headed with key fret motifs and terminating in brass and china castors Condition Report: Condition looks good, it has probably been restored, there is evidence of some historic woodworm (to the lower right rail of the oval) but not too much. The joints look tight. The colour is uniform and the upholstery is good and well fitted. The back legs look OK - no evidence of breaks or repairs. Front castors look original, some minor scuffing and scratches commensurate with age. The back of the chair is lighter than the front.
An early 20th century American-style rocking chair; the stained show-wood carved as faux bambooProbably late 19th/ early 20th century and in reasonable condition for the age; quite low and the arms come away from the verticals the back -- this could be cured with some wood glue; a lot of the original staining has come off where it has been used over the years especially on the arms etc., looks as though it has had new upholstery; looking at the two side verticals there is a thumbnail-sized piece away from the back at the top where it looks like faux bamboo; some scuffing and scratches etc. commensurate with age; overall the woodwork looks a bit faded where it has been used over the years; base has a few scratches; evidence of wear to the edges of the seat at the front
