WILLIAM DELACOUR (FRENCH/SCOTTISH 1700 - 1767), RIVER SCENE WITH CLIFFTOP CASTLE AND FIGURES oil on panel 67cm x 117cm Framed Note: Painted on three transverse planks of Scots pine, originally for a wall panel, but now in a mid-nineteenth century gilt frame. Panmure House, near Carnoustie, was a seventeenth century country house, the seat of the Earls of Panmure. However, the 4th Earl "backed the wrong side" in the 1715 rising, and forfeited his estates and title. Panmure was ceded to his relatives, the Earls of Dalhousie. In the 1740s Dalhouse commissioned William Adam to "modernise" the interior and Adam always used William Delacour for interior scene painting. In 1855, Fox Maule commissioned David Bryce to redesign the house in the Scots Baronial style, and this must have been when the panel was removed and framed. Label verso: Hanover Gallery, Edinburgh, with stock number 88, and dated 1900. Cleaner's label for Doig, Wilson and Wheatley, Edinburgh and a further label, stating the source of the picture as Panmure House.
