Lot 46

David Munro Kirkness of Kirkwall, an important Lady's Orkney chair, circa 1889, made the oak from the St Magnus Cathedral medieval couples, the arms with carved end scroll, woven straw back, drop-in rush seat, applied label with provenance detail and signed by Kirkness, further applied retailer's label to front seat rail, width 52cm, depth 52cm, height 84cm.Footnote:St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall, Orkney, was founded in the 12th century and extended in the 1500s by the Bishop Reid. The hand-written label on this chair states that the oak used in this frame is from the couples from the extension from the 1500s. Further renovations and repair in 1889 led to the medieval timber being given to Kirkness's workshop, which was immediately adjacent to the Cathedral. The labels found on this example are in themselves a scarcity. One other example with a hand-written label relating the timber to the 1500s is now held in the Orkney Museum collection, with that label dated 1901. The small retailer's label is equally rare. Kirkness revived the fashions of the Scottish vernacular craft for the Orkney chair in the late 19th century. It became very popular in leading retailers throughout the country, including being championed by Liberty in London. His workshop went on to produce four different sizes: the hooded chair, the gentleman's chair, a lady's chair, and a child's chair. This example is for the lady.

The Works of an Eccentric Irish Bard O'Kelly (Pat) Proofs, prepared in the mid-20th century, for a new edition of some of the works of the eccentric Irish poet Patrick O’Kelly. O’Kelly (c.1746-1837) fancied himself as a bard in the old Gaelic tradition and travelled around the great houses, praising (or sometimes mocking) their owners.  He is best known for his “Doneraile Litany”, a string of curses on the people of that town, where he had been robbed of his watch; on Lady Doneraile’s replacing the watch, he wrote another poem revoking the curses. The proofs include poems from O’Kelly’s Poems on the Giants’ Causeway( 1808) and The Aonian Kaleidoscope (1824): “A Visit to Clonbrock”; “Epithamium on the Marriage of Nicholas Browne of Mounthazle Esq. to the Amiable Miss Eliza Burke of Marble Hill”; “A New Year’s Gift” (dedicated to the Earl of Clanrickarde); “The Bard’s Grateful Effusions” (inspired by “the delightful villa of Killimur, the Seat of Hyacinth Burke Esq.”); and “The Eidouranium: Addressed to a Lady in Loughrea who loved Dancing”. As a m/ss, w.a.f. (1)

Scéul Chathail Brugha Brugha (Cathal, 1874-1922)  A framed Poster entirely in Irish, being his election address for the Waterford constituency in the general election of 1918, headed ‘Mór-Thoghadh Cho. Phortláirge, 1918 / Scéul Chathail Brugha’,  addressed to ‘A Ghaedheala Phortláirge, a dhaoine cosanta clú 7 teangan na hÉireann ..’  In an unfamiliar Gaelic font, three different sizes, ‘arna chur i gcló ag Ó Lochlainn, Ó Murchadha & Ó Beoláin  Teo.’ (the firm run by Colm Ó Lochlainn’s father). A remarkable document, probably the only election poster in 1918 issued entirely in Irish.  It did him no harm, as he was elected and took his seat in the first Dáil, where he took the chair initially and became Minister for Defence.  Born in Dublin, he was second in command at the South Dublin Union in 1916 and died in July 1922 from wounds received while emerging from a besieged building in O’Connell Street. Suas le Poblacht na h-Éirinn! [Barton, Robert] Dardis (Patrick G.), The Occupation of Land in Ireland in the First Half of the Nineteenth Century. Maunsel 1920, boards, parchment spine. Robert Barton’s copy, inscribed by him in Gaelic letters on f.f.e.p., ‘Riobard Bartún/ Portland Príosún / Sassana / Mí Samhna 22adh 1920 / Suas le Poblacht na h- Éirinn!’ A superb association copy. Robert Barton, from Glendalough House in Co. Wicklow, was a cousin of Erskine Childers. In 1914 he joined the British army and served in France, where his younger brother was killed on the Somme. In Easter Week 1916 he was posted to Dublin, where he was impressed by the dignity of the rebels and appalled by the executions. He resigned his commission, and in 1918 was elected a Sinn Fein MP. He was the Dail’s first Minister for Agriculture, and set up a National Land Bank. In 1919 he was arrested for making seditious speeches. He escaped, but was recaptured in 1920 and sentenced to three years in Portland Prison, where he was ill-treated. He was released in July 1921, with Arthur Griffith, to help with truce negotiations. He was a member of the Treaty delegation, and was the last to agree to sign. He later regretted his decision and took the anti-treaty side. He lost his Dail seat in 1923 and withdrew from politics. He later became chairman of the Agricultural Credit Corporation and of Bord na Mona. He died in 1975.  (1)
