These eight chairs had provenance to the Lords Morley of Saltram House, Devonshire. Saltram was one of the historic properties for which Thomas Chippendale provided furniture during the period 1770-72. Another closely comparable armchair to the present lot, albeit mahogany rather than a painted example, which likewise dates to circa 1780, forms part of the collection of furniture at Temple Newsam House, near Leeds. This comparable is illustrated in C. A Steinway Model M boudoir grand piano, circa late 1926 / early 1927, marked to the interior frame Reg. U.S PAT.OFF Steinway & Sons, New York, Hamburg, Patent Grand Construction, Oct.3. 1899, Tubulor Metallic Action Frame Pat, M 248248. Reconditioned and recently tuned, 96 cm high, 145 x 175 cm. Sold alongside an associated (later) adjusting piano stool, with a twist action rising buttoned seat, 40 x 58 cm. Provenance: Property of a Shropshire gentleman
A 19th century mahogany elbow chair, upholstered in bird and foliate patterned silk type material and raised on moulded front legs. Width across arms 62 cm, height to top of back 95 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally sound with no loose joints. It could be used in its current state without the need for any work. The silk work cover is in generally good order with only very minor marks and slight discolouration in places. There are no holes and no perishing. The seat is firm. The left hand facing arm has been re-attached to the side rail. The screw hole is visible. There is however no movement. The other arm has evidence of old dowel repairs but again there is no movement. All legs and stretchers are in good order.
A 19th century simulated rosewood low chair, with upholstered seat and raised on bobbin turned legs with castors. Width across seat 53 cm, height to top of back 93 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally very sound. There are no loose joints. We can see no evidence of any repairs or restoration. The upholstered seat is in reasonably good order with no significant staining or any holes. The right hand front castor cup is a little loose, the castors would appear to be original.
A pair of metamorphic library steps, four tread, mahogany and closing to chair form. Height 90 cm, width 46 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The steps are structurally sound with no significant condition issues. There are no loose joints. We can see no evidence of any repairs or restoration. The hinges are sound and secure and there is no movement. The steps are sturdy and usable. There are numerous old marks and scuffs as one would probably expect. The seat top has numerous small marks and dents, probably from heels. There is no evidence of any woodworm.
A Queen Anne style oak stool, with floral woolwork top, with carved frame and raised on cabriole legs terminating in claw and ball feet. Width 60 cm (see illustration).. CONDITION REPORT: The stool is structurally fairly sound. One leg is slightly loose at the joint. The same leg has some missing line fretwork at the top of the block on the frieze. Another leg similarly has line fretwork missing at the same point. The egg and dart moulded frame that surrounds the drop in seat squab has some nibbles and losses. The cabriole legs are all in good condition with only the usual scuffs and marks around the feet that one would expect. The drop in seat is sagging in the middle and the webbing is perished. The tapestry top whilst intact is somewhat dirty.
