ALEXANDER SAMOKHVALOV (RUSSIAN 1894-1971)On the Bus, 1970 oil on canvas 90 x 102 cm (35 1/2 x 40 1/8 in.) signed, dated and titled on verso EXPERTISEAccompanied by a certificate of expertise from E. Petrova, State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, 2007LITERATUREL. Zinger, Alexander Samokhvalov (Moscow: Sovetsky khudozhnik, 1982) (illustrated)LOT NOTES Alexander Samokhvalov, one of the foremost representatives of the Leningrad school of painting, began his artistic career in 1914 at the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied under Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. Unlike many of his peers at the academy and the Mir iskusstva circle, such as Eugene Lanceray, Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, or Alexander Osmerkin, in the late 1920s Samokhvalov enthusiastically embraced the development of Socialist Realism for which he is remembered. As in his most recognizable work - Girl in a Football Shirt, awarded the gold medal at the International Art Fair in Paris (which also exhibited Pablo Picasso's Guernica) - his paintings from the 1930s often showcase the first generation of Soviet women as the face of modernity and strength. At first glance, the present painting, made in the year before Samokhvalov's death, appears divergent from the youthful athletic heroism associated with his oeuvre. Here, instead, the painter balances an illustration of working-class Soviet society with an introspective group portrait. The tightly cropped scene, while taking place among supposed strangers, is both a highly intimate and dynamic one. The expressions of the passengers - like the faraway gaze of the blonde man facing the viewer, or of the woman occupying the center left of the painting, or the man beside her glancing upward (as if about to start a conversation) - are oblique yet lively. Each is perpetually at the brink of action: take the woman in the lower right, hands placed on the handle of the seat in front, perhaps ready to disembark, or the one in a striped headscarf, lips questioningly parted. The legible dramatic narrative and typology of early Soviet painting is adapted here to a microcosmic snapshot of daily life, punctuated by an etherial ambiance awarded by the rain-blurred windows. Awash in hazy mauves and umbers, the bus interior, at Samokhvalov's hands, transforms into a meditative landscape. Indeed, public transit, that cornerstone of modern life, has long served as an artist's ideal venue for the convergence of public and private, interior and exterior. From the Socialist Realist subway scenes of the 1930s to the photorealistic paintings of Semen Faibisovich, the Russian painting tradition has never been able to abandon the hidden poetic potential of the day-to-day traveler.CONDITIONObserved in frame, the work is in overall good condition. Inspection under UV light shows scattered areas of retouching, the largest one being a vertical repair, possibly to a tear, along the upper left corner, approximately 30 cm (12 in.) long, and to the center of the beige coat. No more than 5% of the canvas is inpainted.N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Please note that any condition statement regarding works of art is given as a courtesy to our clients in order to assist them in assessing the condition. The report is a genuine opinion held by Shapiro Auctions and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report or a photograph does not preclude the absence of defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. The Jaguar was then restored and converted to right-hand drive, and shortly thereafter was sold to a Mr Frederick Jones of Sunderland (in September 1991).In July 1997 the E-Type was purchased by Mr Justin Noxon, who commissioned a major restoration by Newlands Motors, classic car specialists of Forest Row, Sussex at a cost of over £17,000. At this time the engine was rebuilt, an unleaded conversion was carried out and 'hot' camshafts fitted. The car was also subject to a gearbox rebuild; the radiator was re-cored and Kenlowe fan was fitted. The car was rewired; suspension and braking system refurbished with up-rated brakes (XJ6 front callipers and Coopercraft rear); and a roll bar and race harnesses installed.Next owner Jonathan Kidd acquired the E-Type in May 2001. 1993 Toyota Century VG40Registration no. L763 LBEChassis no. V40-014042Odometer Reading: 40,000MoT Expiry: 01/01/2021*Seldom seen in the UK*Bodywork said to be very good*Engine said to be excellent for starting and runningThe Century has always been a Japanese market-only offering targeting royalty, politicians, and businessmen lucky enough to have a chauffeur rather than having to do their own driving. One of only five on UK roads, this 1993 VG40 model is said to have very good bodywork and good paintwork and trim – the vendor notes there is a slight indentation to the rear bumper and a minor touch-up to an offside door. The interior has vendor-ranked good seats (there is a minor cigarette burn to the front passenger seat cushion) while headlining, dashboard, carpets and door cards are said to be very good: the original lace seat and headrest covers are still fitted. Our vendor reports the engine to be excellent for starting and running and the underbonnet presentation is described as very good, but the bonnet strut is missing. The gearbox and suspension are said to be very good, the brakes and axles excellent. New brake lines (custom fabricated) and rear electronic air shock absorbers have been fitted, along with a custom-made pitman arm. The electrics are noted to be good but the vendor says replacement front door window gears are required, as is an air-conditioning belt and speed sensor. This model comes with factory fitted rear television and VHS cassette player, two detachable front wing flagpoles, and original sales and maintenance brochures. Never sold new in Europe this Century makes a rare and interesting luxury saloon.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 78/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Property of a deceased's estate1993 Harley-Davidson 80ci FXSR-SP Low Rider SportRegistration no. K980 DGSFrame no. 1HD1EGL16PY115649Engine no. EGLP115649Odometer reading: 2,664 miles - not warrantedMoT expiry date: 30 June 2010•With the present (second) owner since January 1994•Requires re-commissioning•Supertrapp Performance silencerThe motorcycling world's biggest and most widely recognised brand, Harley-Davidson has been synonymous with rugged, uncompromising individualism for more than one hundred years. Large-capacity v-twins have been Harley's stock-in trade since the Edwardian era, their various incarnations progressing through countless technological developments that continue to this day. Towards the end of AMF's 1970s stewardship though, the company's future looked less than assured, so the success of the Low Rider was all the more welcome. Styled by Willie G Davidson and introduced for 1977, the Low Rider was the latest in the FX custom/cruiser line that had commenced in 1971 with the Super Glide. But whereas the latter was positioned mid-way between the Electra Glide and Sportster, the Low Rider was a bolder statement altogether. Its raked out forks, stepped seat and minimalist looks were clearly a nod in the direction of the chopper movement, which had been restyling Harleys in this manner for decades. Low and mean-looking, the first Low Rider set new standards of 'cool' among production motorcycles that have yet to be surpassed.Offered here is an example of the Low Rider Sport, a variant newly introduced for 1987 that featured improved suspension and a smaller front mudguard. Acquired by the late (second) owner in January 1994, the Harley boasts a Supertrapp Performance silencer and a carburettor air scoop, and currently displays a total of only 2,664 miles on the odometer. It is not known when the machine was last run and whilst the machine cranks, it does not start. Sold strictly as viewed, it will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use. Offered with a V5C document and other paperwork.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 56/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1928 Sunbeam 25HP Four Seat TourerRegistration no. RM 6740Chassis no. 1130LKOdometer Reading: TBAMoT: Exempt *Believed restored many years ago*Bought from the 1999 Brooks Goodwood Festival of Speed sale*Little use in recent years but kept 'on the button' Powered by a 3.6-litre engine the '25hp' Sunbeam was a car for the serious driver who appreciated the build quality and engineering integrity. Bonhams is pleased to offer this 25hp that carries sporting tourer bodywork and has been in long-term (21 years) ownership. Believed to have been restored many years ago its general external appearance is said to be between average and good, with the interior in very much the same order throughout. Mechanically the vendor says while there has not been much use in recent years, the engine, gearbox and running gear are reported to be between good and average condition and that the car has been kept 'on the button' by a local engineer. An interesting, powerful pre-war tourer with many competition possibilities and said to be 'on the button.'Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 60/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1927 Bentley 3-Litre Speed Model Sports Roadster Registration no. JO 377Chassis no. TN1559*Originally a Weymann saloon by Gurney Nutting*Substantially known ownership history*Present ownership since 1998*Recent extensive professional refurbishmentWith characteristic humility 'W O' was constantly amazed by the enthusiasm of later generations for the products of Bentley Motors Limited, and it is testimony to the soundness of his engineering design skills that so many of his products have survived. From the humblest of beginnings in a mews garage off Baker Street, London in 1919 the Bentley rapidly achieved fame as an exciting fast touring car, well able to compete with the best of European and American sports cars in the tough world of motor sport in the 1920s. Bentley's domination at Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930 is legendary, and one can only admire the Herculean efforts of such giants as Woolf Barnato, Jack Dunfee, Tim Birkin and Sammy Davis, consistently wrestling the British Racing Green sports cars to victory. W O Bentley proudly unveiled the new 3-litre car bearing his name on Stand 126 at the 1919 Olympia Motor Exhibition, the prototype engine having fired up for the first time just a few weeks earlier. Bentley's four-cylinder 'fixed head' engine incorporated a single overhead camshaft, four-valves per cylinder and a bore/stroke of 80x149mm. Twin ML magnetos provided the ignition and power was transmitted via a four-speed gearbox with right-hand change. The pressed-steel chassis started off with a wheelbase of 9' 9½' then adopted dimensions of 10' 10' ('Standard Long') in 1923, the shorter frame being reserved for the TT Replica and subsequent Speed Model. Rear wheel brakes only were employed up to 1924 when four-wheel Perrot-type brakes were introduced. In only mildly developed form, this was the model that was to become a legend in motor racing history and which, with its leather-strapped bonnet, classical radiator design and British Racing Green livery, has become the archetypal Vintage sports car. Early success in the 1922 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, when Bentleys finished second, fourth, and fifth to take the Team Prize, led to the introduction of the TT Replica (later known as the Speed Model) on the existing 9' 9½' wheelbase, short standard chassis. Identified by the Red Label on its radiator, the Speed Model differed by having twin SU 'sloper' carburettors, a higher compression ratio, different camshaft and the close-ratio A-type gearbox, the latter being standard equipment prior to 1927 when the C-type 'box was adopted. These engine changes increased maximum power from the standard 70 to 80bhp and raised top speed to an impressive 90mph. Other enhancements included the larger (11-gallon) fuel tank and (usually) André Hartford shock absorbers. Bentley made approximately 1,600 3-Litre models, the majority of which was bodied by Vanden Plas with either open tourer or saloon coachwork.According to leading marque authority Dr Clare Hay's definitive work, Bentley: The Vintage Years, chassis number 'TN1559' was completed in January 1927 and left the factory fitted with engine number '1566'. Originally bodied by Gurney Nutting as a Weymann-type saloon and first registered 'YE 1140', the Bentley was first owned by Captain W G Horne. The rest of its history prior to WW2 is uncertain, but at the war's end the car was purchased from Roy's in Kenilworth by a Mr Lloyd, who owned a metalworking business in nearby Leamington Spa. It was claimed that the owner previous to Mr Lloyd had been one of the late Sir Henry Segrave's mechanics and that he intended to race the car. He had removed the original saloon body, which was not included in the sale. Very nicely done, the current lightweight two-seater body dates from the immediately post-war period and was built by the car's then owner. In the ensuing years the Bentley passed into the ownership of Tony Judd, who raced it, destroying the original engine when it threw a rod. The engine was replaced with the current unit (number '343') which dates from 1923. Tony sold the Bentley through Stanley Mann Racing to Mr David Jenkins. David Jenkins lived near Cardiff and enjoyed owning the car for around four years. He also owned a Tiger Moth, which he flew from Rhys airfield, and lost his life as the result of a flying accident. During his ownership David Jenkins twice drove the Bentley to Le Mans with his wife to witness the 24-hour race. The current vendor bought the car, via a broker, from his widow in May 1998.During the vendor's early ownership he too drove the Bentley to Le Mans to watch the 24-hour race (in 2000 and 2001) and also drove it to Bruges, Belgium on a private tour with a group of 12 Bentleys. At the lunch stop, Jimmy Medcalf stated that the car had been travelling at a respectable 70-75mph on the motorway, while his brother Bill Medcalf, another Bentley Drivers' Club stalwart, remarked on how pretty it is. The only major mechanical work carried out concerns the crankshaft bearings, which have been re-white-metalled by renowned engineer, Arthur Archer of Great Dunmow. The body and chassis, though, have recently undergone extensive renovation by SJD Classic Restorations (Steve Downs) of Southminster, Essex. SJD disassembled the entire car, removing all bodywork from the chassis and stripping it of all mechanical components. The chassis and axle assemblies were then sand-blasted, prepared, primed and repainted. The aluminium body panels were removed from the timber frame and any rotten elements replaced. All bodywork was stripped back to bare metal and any damaged or corroded sections cut out and replaced with new aluminium. All panelling edges were replaced and the body tub skin refitted to the repaired frame. The wings, bonnet and scuttle were similarly repaired with new metal, as were the dickey seat lids, following which all bodywork was prepared, primed and repainted prior to refitting to the chassis. Other works carried out included repairing the wiring loom; fitting new shock absorbers and wheels; and re-plating the nickel brightwork, repairing it as necessary. Dated October 2019, SJD's invoice for £43,602 is on file. According to the vendor: 'The car has bags and bags of charisma and is a great joy to drive. It goes fast thanks to the lightweight body and stops quickly as well! In its current condition it has been described as 'resplendent''. 'TN1559' has also featured in four editions of the BDC Review (details available). A wonderful opportunity to acquire a unique 'W O' Speed Model Bentley, benefiting from recent extensive professional refurbishment.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 75/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1986 Mercedes-Benz GE280Registration no. D575 UNTChassis no. WDB46023227048265Odometer Reading: 96,000MoT Expiry: TBA*Short-wheelbase model*Some history, comes with driver's handbook and maintenance booklet*Seldom offered in this conditionOriginally destined for military applications the G-wagen soon found a strong international customer base when it was released to the public, albeit in less spartan form. The classic market has warmly embraced this ultra-usable four-wheel drive, which looks just at home on a plush suburban street as it would on an out-of-the-way countryside fishing trip. Bonhams is pleased to offer this 1986 short wheelbase 280, which is said to have very good bodywork, paint, glass and wheels. The legendary Mercdes-Benz panel fit is apparent, as is quality of the mid-blue metallic paint. Wheelarch extensions lack the knocks and damage afflicting many G-wagens, giving this example an impressive air. The seats, dashboard and door cards are ranked as very good, seat facings showing no rips, tears or fading, while the headlining is ranked as very good. Our vendor reports the engine as excellent for running and very good for starting, while mechanical components are said to be very good. Running gear is reported to be very good and the brakes as excellent. A good opportunity to acquire a well-presented short-wheelbase G-wagen which comes with some history.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 84/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray T-Top TargaRegistration no. LYX 330KChassis no. 1237W2S503615Odometer Reading: 67,058MoT Expiry: 24/5/21 *Much history*£16,000 restoration – bills on file*Featured in Motor Sport June 1976 issuePowered by a 454 cubic inch (7.2-litre) 'big block' V8 early 1970s Corvettes maintained the big-is-best arms race that began in the early-1960s. Just a couple of years after this car was built emissions controls strangled even the largest engines, so in many ways this Corvette and its siblings represent the end of an era. Offered here is an unmistakably yellow example whose body and paintwork present well, as do the trim and wheels/tyres. The brown interior is in good condition with some wear to the trim, centre console and the steering wheel, while the door cards and seat facings present well. Handbook and tools are included, along with t-top envelopes and armrest covers. If there's no substitute for cubic inches this 454 Corvette T-Top is the answer. It comes with good history including bills for more than£16,000 spent on restoration work. Also includes invoices and MoTs since 1975 confirming the original low mileage.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 93/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH.
