A pair of ‘Fine Feathers’ oak bedroom chairs, designed by Ambrose Heal for Heal & Son, each with an arched top rail, a shaped splat with heart-shaped pierced detail and a rush seat (2)After training as a cabinetmaker, Ambrose Heal joined the family bedding business in Tottenham Court Road in 1893. He became involved with the Art Worker's Guild and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society and was inspired to create furniture designs which were initially made for him by Ashbee's Guild of Handicrafts. In 1898, his factory was moved to its definitive position at the end of Alfred Mews, where he produced his own furniture and, in particular, four new bedroom suites including the 'Fine Feathers' suite.
