A fine and rare mid-18th century yew and elm comb back Windsor chair Thames Valley, in the manner of Pitt and Hewitt of Slough, with carved shaped top rail over an eight spindle back with solid vase form splat, within flat splat outer uprights, over gently outswept arms on flat arched supports, one with old plated repair, the broad shaped seat raised on substantial carved cabriole legs with pad feet, united by a turned H-stretcher, 38½in. A Russian carved walnut and parcel gilt Trompe L`oeil Chair after a design by Vasilii Petrovich Shutov, circa 1900, the curved backrest and front legs in the form of a decorated yoke carved with a Russian adage in stylized script, the arms carved as axes set in logs, the solid seat with engraved foliate and roundel decoration, a carved pair of woodworkers gloves at the back, with two turned back legs centred by a back support in the form of a balalaika, 39¾in. (101cm.) high, 31¼in. (80.5cm.) wide.
