A German giltwood gilt side chair by Johann Valentin Raab , early 19th century, the anthemion decorated cresting above a padded back and bowed drop-in seat, on carved lion monopodia front legs, bearing the stamp I.V. Raab and a paper label fragment This chair is by the Frankfurt-based chair-maker Johann Valentin Raab (1777-1839). His principal commissions include furniture supplied for the Schloss in Würzburg between 1807 and 1809. A closely related armchair in the Frankfurter Historisches Museum, is illustrated in H. Kreisel/G. Himmelheber, Die Kunst des Deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1973, vol. III, p. 81 and p. 98, fig. 499. Provenance: Purchased Christie's London, 13th November 2003, lot 81
