Very Fine American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Sofa , c. 1850-1860, attr. to John Henry Belter, New York, "Fountain Elms" pattern, rose-carved crest, reticulated serpentine rails, scrolled arms, shaped seat, floral apron, cabriole legs, casters , h. 47 in., w. 86 in., d. 33 3/4 in. Provenance: The Service Collection, Estate of Grant A. Oakes, Warren, OH; sold in these rooms, Feb. 20, 2016, lot 422. Note: This sofa is directly related to a rare and very successful design from John Henry Belter’s workshop, the most famous examples of which are found at the Italianate mansion Fountain Elms in Utica, New York and are part of the collection of the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute (acc. 59.199).
