Manner of William 'Crimean' Simpson (1823-1899) Balaklava Harbour, watercolour, 28 x 42cmNotes: This watercolour is after William Simpson's seris 'The seat of War in the East' and depicts in the foreground the Grand Crimean Central Railway built in 1855 by the British to carry supplies to the army positioned on the plateau between the harbour and the besieged Russian city of Sebastopol. As demonstrated by the topography in this watercolour Balaklava was not well suited as the main port for all supplies being sent in land to the British army. To compound the trials of the British troops they were also positioned in front of Sebastopol with their right flank exposed to the Russians. In sharp contrast their French allies were securely sandwiched between the British army and the sea with their supplies arriving within easy distance from Kamesh Bay.
